There is no need to be mean :(

I recently read the most recent closed thread on this section and I will be honest, I was a little shocked by the level of nastiness. I really had hoped that we could be more civil about certain topics but obviously not. If you don't agree with something, that is fine but there is no need to mock, jeer and put down others. We are all adults here. Granted, we may get our feathers ruffled and I certainly have been in some pointless arguments on this site that I regret but many here need to get off their high horse and grow up. This should be a constructive site, not a place where we blow off steam by ragging on others. Again, if you wish to complain or make a point, be civil. I certainly would discouraged after a thrashing like that.

Hmmm.....it's about that guy who asked money to buy a RED camera?
Maybe, he could ask Jim for a free RED. I mean he's a billionaire, he could give him a camera,it won't make him poor.

I think the reason that particular thread went sour is that most people on this forum actually work in film for a living. And most R1 owners had to struggle to get their camera. Along comes a guy suggesting that we should fund his camera, and in return he will undercut rental prices, while using the proceeds to make unfunded films where he'll continue to underpay his crew. But I have to agree with Andrew, all discussion should be kept civil. Take any David Mullen post for inspiration (not that I can claim to have even come close to reach his level of Zen.)

What thread? Could you put a link in your original post?

David

After he was accused of being narcissistic, a fraud, and wanting to exploit a crew, I was almost bracing for him to be equated to a murderer. Misguided? Yeah. Shameful? No, not really. I haven't been here long, but there seems to be a certain level of confusion presented on what technology is OK to use or not. I understand that this is considered a forum for professionals to discuss RED systems they probably already have because they're able to afford it, but a lot of the incredulity of lesser-means filmmaking trickles down and probably causes a level of confusion in those who look up to the pros.

All forums have these flare-ups. What we wouldn't say to a stranger's face in real life comes sliding out with great ferocity here. But I'm hoping that REDUSER, being the pro place for digital camera technology that it is, can learn to lead by shining example.

Well, I stand by my comments.

Here was someone who apparantly has never done any volunteer work and is looking for a free RED camera. How is that not self-centered?

I find that shameful, so I respectfully disagree with your point of view. And I would say shameful to his face.

Ain`t that the TRUTH Vladimir, you`ve said it perfectly.Sometimes i wince at some of the exchanges i read, not the content ,but the ferocity as you say,and i try hard not to contribute myself to dishing out the equivalent of electronic paper cuts when blogging.Despite the apparent `distance`of just tapping away without thinking, when the heats on and anger or indignation rises, it`s clearly forgoten that the online space is actually pretty personal.
`E-rage` sadly seems quite common these days.

I sent him a private message where I suggested he should write directly to Jim Jannard and ask him for a free RED camera...Jim is a billionaire and he already gives millions each year to charities so giving away a free camera to a poor film-maker won't be such a big effort for him.... Do you think Jim would do it?

NO.

Do you think of this person as a person truly in NEED? Isn't that what charity is all about?

I recall some local kids being given gift certificates from local businesses because of all their effort to help others. They never asked for anything. I gave someone my old car once because she needed it to get to work to feed the kids and keep a roof over their heads. She never asked for it, and never said "I need a NEW car".

The guy asking for a free RED works in finance. He's able to earn the money to pay for it, or get a loan. I find it shameful that he would ask others to pay for something he can earn himself. That's greedy. Another hot-button word for you.

If you think that me saying that is mean, so be it. I may be doing him a favor. He may re-evaluate his motives, and decide to help others who really need help.

I do hope that you were attempting to change his mind and help him to help others, but I think there are more convincing and tactful ways to do so.

Such as?

I was trying to get him to look at his motives. If saying that I think this is shameful is a problem for him and makes him feel bad about it, then it had the effect I intended. Not to offend, but to perhaps look at it differently.

Try this one on for size.

"Hey Dad, can I ask for a favor?"

"Hi son. what's on you mind?"

"I want a new RED camera"

"Hmm, how much is it, maybe you can pay me back with your allowance for doing chores around the house."

"About $30,000"

"What makes you think you need it, or deserve it?"

"I dunno, I just want it.."

And then the teenage rationalization about why he needs one will take place over the following days.. etc.

It doesn't take much imagination. People are less prone to be convinced with hostility. And then what's the point of even attempting?

I agree. But sometimes when someone is so stuck in their belief, a raised voice gets their attention.

It's not the the only, or best way, but unfortunately sometimes that is what's needed.

Ever tell a teenager to do their homework, and the evening is almost over and it still isn't done? Sometimes getting in someone's face is what is necessary.

Anyway, I'm out of here. Have a great day.

I hear this everyday from my teenage boys.

They see all my gear and say "But Dad you have cool stuff and we want
some too."

I say to them "I have worked almost 30 years to get to this point
and I realize that the gear is only a small part of it. It is the skill
that you develop that will make you the money. Just having the
latest, greatest equipment will not make videos any better than
a person who has developed a skill over decades of practice, now
go mow the yard if you want $15 to add to your piggy bank."

Andrew, he was a scam artist and was dealt with appropriately.
I read that thread. You're stepping on thin ice over here.

Your post is enough to be sued in the civilized world. I would think twice before posting next time.

Now, I don't have kids, but if I did I would explain to them that in life you have to earn stuff and not just get stuff. So, I'd probably make up a deal that I'd get on and help them make a movie or two and if they were still interested we could talk. Not about a RED One, but about something smaller and more affordable.
Getting aggressive or irritated certainly wouldn't help.

Heh, heh....I do have kids - you don't understand that getting aggressive and getting irritated works wonders under the right circumstance's.
