I randomly found out about a violin making school here in Chicago, so went and filmed their students hard at work.

Do watch with headphones on! I aimed for it to feel like an immersive mini-doc/promo!

Camera: RED Weapon Magnesium
Format: 6K 2:1
Speeds: 36 - 72 fps
Lenses: DSO 38, 58, 88
Grading: None - just Dragoncolor2/REDgamma4

About 70% of this is foley - since I was shooting a varispeed, I couldn't record audio, so recreated a lot of the sounds at home with an H4n and random items in my apartment.

Any feedback you have for future shoots would be hugely helpful - I'm always trying to improve!

Thank you for watching!

Bold! No use of music or voice until violins themselves come in. Only suggestion would be perhaps create a bit more room ambiance and blend the foley in a bit more. Maybe a touch of reverb. But liked the shots, very cool process. I love seeing hand crafted stuff like this. Good job!

Also, for a shorter version you could probably build a symphonic montage of sounds of the violins being built and then transition into the violins playing and the title. 2 to 2 1/2 minutes.

The images are great as is the sound. It's pretty bold to use just that sound but it is surprisingly engaging. I watched it through without distraction. It's a pretty cool thing. Nice going.

Thank you! Are there specific spots you recommend adding reverb and blending foley? I'm admitted not familiar with the former - this is my first time doing foley and playing with audio like this, so any guidance would be awesome!

Brendan, the lighting and focus is on point. Nice work :)

I loved it, inspiring.

Thank you Matt, Jon, and Hugh

I'm very glad it was captivating - I wanted to immerse viewers into what the students experience five days a week for three years straight, so it's good to hear the style was engaging!
