  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The wheel turns.

Note, the previous link indicates a release in 2013 "by 2014". In reality we hear about certain camera releases that take many months to turn up here, so even if this get released and distribution by 2014 it might not hit most stores until after CES.

Here is the new ultra compact m4/3rds camera mentioned elsewhere:

Pity it was not 4k (there are 4k chipset that should be capable of uncompressed output for recording, or even visually lossless) and locked like this:

I'll believe that shit when I see it with my own two eyes in front of my face and in my own two hands. Every digital camera maker has failed to get 4K video to work on those smaller camera designs because the power usage destroys the low-end batteries like Godzilla on speed, not to mention the thermal issues.

Wow you really do have issues with evidence, it wouldn't be evidence even if they released a press release announcing it, or peooke told you they seen it or used it, or if you saw them using it at the same time, or you stuck you face up to it to read the 4k tag and fine print of the model, it would also have to be in your two hands at the sane time ;) You never see me say this ussually out of respect, but LoL. That is too funny.

Have a look over at www.ambarella.com their 4k chipset us something like 1W to go in cheap handhelds, or the snapdragon used in the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phablet that shoots 4k, on the side. It is hyped up yester years technology, even on phones now, 8k cameras are already announced. Now if you want to do 600mb/s 4k, then you might need a handheld, which they have. Look at the gm1 linked, it is pretty light, maybe, maybe not full (if they make it too small you can't hold it and the lens properly). It does fullhd, make it 4 times bigger, you gave uhd 4k kind of processing power, no, a lot bunch or other stuff is not needed in there more than once, so maybe you get enough space for 10 times the processing power and extra battery to run it, into 6k territory. They are having you on. They wait till it is really cheap to make before they sell it to you at high prices. The 4k market has been stalled for around 5 years of Moore's law from cheaper than Red one release, high end consumer camera release. We should have multiple more high end 8k cameras. 4k was done nearly ten years ago, I used to go to the website of the company that made them, the ones behind the JVC prototype.

I don't even expect this thing to be beyond 150mb/s long gop, (200+ would be better) but competition is starting and pricing is coming down. If it is a proper professional camcorder formfactor, I expect it to be priced and specced against a similar Sony model, but if it is a hybrid still thing, maybe it will be cheaper.

My phone shoots UHD ( note 3 ) and now there is a way to turn up bitrate to something like 80 megabits. ( rooted devices, so I'm not doing that just yet ). They are also working to get 24P out of it as well.
4K is not so fancy any more.

That makes my night Les, thanks, have you got links? I prefer at least 100mb/s, but the 30 fps is the sticking point, if they could get 50fps, or even 100th/s second readout from the sensor at 50fps, they could get that rolling shutter down. Another issue, is this gets close in performance to being able to do a cineform raw like codec, or the new non-wavelet jpeg format. Even raw recording might be possible if there was a card that could handle it (did they have a card slot this time?).

Thanks.

If you thought that was do do, check this out, hilarious Gh5 in December thread:

I like the comment of the guy over there, that the gh3 will just be in the shops by the time the gh5 arrives on this chart. And the one about 4k not being in the name because the number 4 not being used in model numbers in Asian countries because it is bad luck. I'll have to wait for 5k then. ;)

It was on a thread in xda-developers.com . They bumped the bitrate by editing a file they specified.

The phone shoots very nice UHD as is, actually . I was thinking of shooting something under carefully controlled / lower contrast conditions and posting the UHD here saying it's RED , asking how people like the sharpness of my new canon mount lens or some such BS story, get the usual oooo and ahhh comments, then break it to them that it was a camera phone. ;)

Raw? Naww, what for ? There is little chance of any bit depth there anyhow, and the debayer looks pretty good as is.
What would be 'cooler' is doing a Magic lantern style alternating ISO trick, then you could get more bitdepth with motion compensated post processing like what 19lights does for the Canon alternating every other frame ISO hack. Poor mans HDRX.

I'm shooting with my Epic in Tanzania in a couple of weeks, and I've been told that you just don't walk around the city's with an expensive looking cam in those parts. At least I'll get some city shots with the phone in 4K ! hahaha.

here is a video still frame grab from the phones uhd video mode. Let me know if Dropbox is not giving you the full rez file, it does odd things sometimes.
Video said it was 48 megabits data rate.
Shot from my car while at a light. No strippers or models , sorry ;)

Great minds think alike. Years ago I was going to do the same trick with a scarlet fixed against a really cheap camera, and simply ask people what they thought of my new shots in finale h264 render. But the scarlet kept being delayed for years. I think the camera was a few hundred dollars, I don't think it was my kodak ze1 ;). One of my favorite little pocket finger cameras. O think I was going to make what is now called a speed booster 35mm adaptor for it. People didn't get it when I put this forwards many years ago, but now there are plenty.

That note 3 with amoled screen is still flashy for a poor country.

A number of cheap sensors have multislope exposure built in, so beyond 12 stops is not unique, I have cheap ones rated at 16 stops. So you might get some use out of 10 bit Les.

What I've noticed us lackluster color, massive rolling shutter, especially when android camera lowers the frame rate to 15 or 12 fps inside. You might try the Re motion mount on it :). So a few things to try, however outputting uncompressed raw via USB 3 would use a lot less processing power.

Thanks for this again Les.

Led, what I would like to know is if it can do 50p UHD at a descent data rate?

That XDA hack sounds like what LgcameraPro probably does. It is the best I've found do far but old and not accurate. I've been looking for somebody to test it with the Note 3 in 4k 50fps 100mb/s settings, feel like trying it?

If you want to try it there are a few quirks to look out for. The program seems to set settings but the system ignores them and uses some standard setting. but the program does not know and thinks it is recording according to the settings. So used settings could be more or less than specified. To get around this you have to open something like mxplayer and read the bit and frame rate. I think it might be variable bit rate in some modes where it will try to raise data rate for complex scenes. The compression codec settings is what affects things the most, it must be tied to preset software or hardware support. Some codecs will work extremely badly with low data rates on one codec, and to its max with another, but on another machine it can be reversed. So picking around the settings helps, realising that one of 29.xx fps or 30 fps is a recognised frame rate and it will work. even at 60p unexpectedly in one case.

u're not going to achieve 2X framerate And 2X the data rate. 2x is a stretch, even.
I'm not going to root my phone because of the problems it might cause.at least not in the near future.

I don't think LgCameraPro needs a rooted phone, but you can test out what frame rates the phone can do. It works on my Motorola and its unrootable.

Data rate should be the main performance dependant feature, frame rate is dependent largely on the sensor system and it's data paths, it will either support it or not (might only do 30p and 60p though). What do you think Les?

Thanks again.

the code mentioned , 3845#*880# does not work for my phone. Is that supposed to work on note3 ?

Was that for the rooted hack Les or lg?

lg camera does not work: Capped at 1920 max resolution . 100mb at 1920 won't record either.
Maybe someone will figure out the secret menu on note3 for changing settings.

Thanks Les, so we are locked out. I've tried to contact the programmer of lg, but no response. I don't think he is actively updating, so unless he picks up my mail, he may not anytime soon.
