  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The upgrade bug.

Only a year in with Raven and I already have the itch to move up to Scarlet-W? Is this what I have to look forward to as a RED customer? Someone walk me down off the ledge. Love my Raven but the upgrade path and other features of S-W are beginning to really pull at me.
 
Don't do anything until after July 6... then decide. '-)

I think Jarred assured everyone that what's coming on July 6 wouldn't effect buying a camera today. Unless, I suppose, if you think you are going to be too broke after 7/6 the you can't afford the upgrade.

I think if I currently had a Raven, I'd look to jump past a Scarlet-W at some point; seems to small of an increment. Just one opinion.

All your points are valid. But for me anyway, I want to wait to see what's coming.

A Raven may be plenty good for capturing content for the new "thing".
 
Definitely hear you. S-W is more toward my price range, so it felt like a solid step up while not breaking the bank. I have seen some Scarlet Dragons and even Epic Dragons on sale for a decent amount, but I really am in love with the build of the DSMC2 Reds. Unless something is in the works, Raven almost feels like an afterthought for the company now that 8K/Epic-W/Helium sensors have taken off. It's a good base level entry model, but nothing that warrants any kind of upgrade outside of firmware.

But then again, it is perfect for the doc work I do and clients love it. So perhaps jumping the gun is unwarranted.
 
I sold my Raven for more than I paid for it, bought a SW... Just got it and love it! I like to have the opportunity at a little bit bigger sensor size. Also, SW is upgrade-able in the future.. for me, it was worth the cost to upgrade.
 
Word, yeah that is what I have listed heavily on my pros list for switching. Raven is perfectly versatile, S-W just seems to cross that line into future proof. Plus the new swappable sensor program that Jarred recently announced would apply to all DSMC2 Reds, but not Raven. I think it's a brilliant idea.
 
I have been wrestling with the same decision, maybe once the S-W is available to buy immediately I will make that jump.

FWIW, I think you are pretty much there. I have had one on order for a long time but was in no hurry to take delivery. I was notified of my allocation a couple of times but passed at the time. Now, given the changing circumstances of pricing and the expiration of my favorable pricing, I pulled the trigger a few days ago. The camera which was not currently allocated, shipped within a couple of days. My impressions that RED is pretty much caught up.

Don't get me wrong, I think Scarlet-W is a terrific choice. So much so that I just bought one. And I do get that Raven is a little less powerful and noticeably lacking compared to S-W. So, yeah, if it meets your needs and you are wanting to step up, go for it.

As an aside - but relevant - I think there are two strategies for optimizing the use of tech products that become obsolete fairly quickly. Either buy as far up the line as possible (stretching your price range) and then work the product as hard as possible for as long as possible, until it is nearly worthless. Then you start again. Or, you buy just what you need and, before it loses too much value to "the new thing," you sell it off at a (hopefully) small loss and buy back in, again at a level that fits your needs. Rinse and repeat.

Have fun with your new Scarlet-W. :-)
 
But then I go back and review something I shot and think "yeah that looks pretty damn great." Lol. Madness!!!!

 
I got over it after some careful consideration, which included me reminding myself that 5K doesn't make a story more compelling. Jarred even commented on a FB status I made about it reassuring me that I made the right call with the Raven. So I'm sticking with it and am going to be even more vocal in my support for it as a phenomenal camera for documentary and commercial work, which is sort of my bread and butter. My clients love the result and at the end of the day that's what matters to me. Plus, all the money I just saved not upgrading means I can shop for some nice glass :) Glass is what makes the image unique, the camera is just the vessel. Cine lens companies are coming around and catering to us EF mount folks anyway.

Hi Joe
I feel the Raven is a great camera, especially if you are more interested in doco. I would ask;
Do you need the extra 1/2K resolution?
Do you really need to use what are mostly heavy PL mounted lenses?
I would also ask
If you edit - How good is your editing suite?
How good is your audio kit?
How good is your lighting kit?
Do you have a good EVF?
Do you have a good dolly or slider or stabilizer.
I live in a small state with no rental house and regularly hire out tripods. slider, lights, lenses, batteries, monitors, apple boxes, shot bags but hardly ever get asked for a camera.
In Australia I find a lot of productions are shot on Arri in 2K pro res, so I feel 4.5K is more than enough for me.
