  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

Hey Guys I have read almost all of this 400+ page thread so please do forgive me if this has been covered. If I upgrade to a EpicW now will the option to then upgrade from the EpicW to Weapon Helium at some point in the future in a year or so or is this a one time deal.

Pretty sure upgrading to Epic-W puts you on the standard Red upgrade path to the next thing. In this case that's Weapon Helium. But, it has been mentioned that the pricing and upgrades might be adjusted to account for higher demand. So I think striking while the iron is hot is a good way to view this.

So if the datarate of Epic-W is (almost) double that of Scarlet-W that would be around 280 MB/s. Now if you look at Helium 8K FF @ 30 fps RC 9:1...that's "only" 180 MB/s (again according to Phil Hollands tool)

So you're telling me there's more...? ;)

Edit: I don't presume more fps or lower compression but the chance to record 8K R3D + ProRes at the same time looks pretty realistic to me now.

Interesting. If so, then why would Jarred say that it's a sideways step to Epic-W from Weapon MG? If it has higher res and higher data rates, then it doesn't seem comparable at all.

The way I interpreted Jarrad's statement about moving sideways from MG to Epic-W was related to the cost/value relationship.
Since MG is still quite new in the line up - and will be discontinued (but still supported), RED is ensuring that those that invested will not feel what was referred to as being "trick fucked".
When you begin comparing implied specs, the cost to migrate is an exceptional bargain. For RED, it helps solidify the line up.

Just one more example of how RED is going beyond expectations.

I may have missed it, but if it's $19500 for all 'MX to Epic-W' trade-ins/upgrades, and $14500 for 'Epic Dragon to Epic-W' trade-ins/upgrades, anyone know what it's actually stated as being for 'Scarlet Dragon to Epic-W' trade-ins/upgrades?

We're at the week mark... Google Pixel announcement Oct 4th, meh. Presidential Debate #2 Oct 9th, meh. Red Announcement Oct 11th, WOOOT!!!?!?!?

My mind is pretty much set I guess. Only waiting on drunken financing announcement to see if my stretching can go past the Epic-W and into Weapon.

I'm curious to see what the results are, is to turn up the compression on 8K (like to 15:1) knowing that I'll be compressing it down to 4K. That way I can minimize the data rate but retain the RAW capability.

THIS is why I wish we had some raw Helium R3d files to play with, .. I'm really curious how it will hold up under big compression.

I'm very confused about this data rate issue. Jared in that image said we could get 75 FPS at 6K which is exactly what the Weapon MG will do, which led me to think 225 MB/S is the datarate, but saying it's almost exactly double would mean we would be getting higher FPS at the various resolutions. Would love to know the specs soon so I can put in the right AKS order to my dealer, 7 days to go!!! Whoooo

could just have to do with the fact this goes to 8k, but you'll probably have more options using a 512gb or 1 tb mag as opposed to 120 or 240

I suspect there're two factors, one is data rate off the sensor (which may limit the fps for a given resolution) and the other is data rate to storage. If the E-W has 280MB/s but the sensor tops out at 8K 30p then maybe we can get better compression than 9:1 shown or perhaps that data rate to storage is higher because of ProRes 4K recording. The Helium does 6:1 at 30p 8K for 270MB/s. Total speculation though!

cheers

I agree, I don't think we should read into the data rate too much in regards to frame rate. Like Jarred said, things get exponentially harder as you go up in resolution and if we are able to do 8K RAW + 4K ProRes simultaneously, that's a lot of data. It would be great to get some better compression ratios, though!

Keep in mind that max fps/res is not solely about data-rate. There are more factors in that game.
