  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I think I knew you were funning him, but based on his question, it was pretty clear he wouldn't know that....
BUT, all is fair in love and war when it comes to new S35 8K!!!
 
I tried to make a simulation of what we would get in terms of sensor size by cropping the Helium 8K in order to gain higher FPS.
The chart is based on the specs we know from the Stormtrooper Heliums

This thread has become my morning coffee read.

I find it amazing that a tech company can create this level of buzz about an upgrade to a camera that people don't even have. I'm sucked in too. I've had SW on order since April, so would hope that whilst i've not waited as long as some here, i'd still be in the catchment group.

I'm loving the speculation, but at the same time i'm wary of 8K in general. I'm mostly vfx/post work and would never work at 8K. I doubt anyone is, even most 4K shows are posted at 2K for vfx work. I know as a master it's perfect and can be down sampled though.

It seems the 8K sensor area could be the same as Helium Weapon and roughly the same as 6K Dragon. This is a bit bigger than S35 which suits fine. I'm a fan of full frame, so anything that gets closer to that is good. Seems the biggest difference between Dragon and Helium could be sensitivity and the shadows.

As has been speculated on here i suspect the trade off between weapon and epic could be frame rates and data rates in general. It's difficult to see where weapon and epic are in terms of line up, they seems very similar at the moment.

But one thing that hasn't been touched on (and mostly won't under perhaps later) is what kind of extra wait will this create?
I hope that the powers that be are able to give an indication of what this could be at the time of the announcement, that is a key factor in deciding.
Along with that drunken finance option, and whether that applies outside the US because 8K will mean more mini mags and all sorts...

I have a feeling they won't offer a Weapon Mg upgrade. Part of the motivation of the Helium offer is because it would be easier and faster to fulfill the Helium cameras than the Dragon ones. Plus, with possible changes coming to the lineup in October, the Weapon Mg may not continue to exist as we know it.
 
So does anyone have an update on the Dragon Sensors? Trying to figure out how much longer I have to wait for my Weapon. This wait has been killlerrrrrr, but so worth it....

Just my personal consideration, I can't decide between the Scarlet-w and Epic-w amazing 10k off deal. At the moment I'm more on the SW side.

_Sensor seems both amazing, maybe Helium will benefit after the new color science is released in October

_Cost 10k difference instead of 20k (thanks RED), when I'll sell the camera for the next upgrade will get some investment bacl

_Resolution 8k is amazing but I'm afraid how to handle the huge files. I work with 5k scarlet-D files in Premiere/Davinci/After Effects really well, I don't think my iMac and MacBook can manage them in the same way. Also hard drives etc. Unless the camera will downsample the 8k to 4k R3D, that would be amazing.

_New queue scares me, I need the camera asap

after using the Scarlet-W I honestly can't imagine a better all-around shooting experience. It is pretty much the perfect camera..and looks almost exactly like the footage from the weapon MG. Having said that.. the amazing opportunity to upgrade to 8k (the future) is too amazing to pass up.

She was asking about if a Scarlet-W order could be upgraded to a Weapon 6K (I'm assuming instead of upgrading to Helium), so I was just giving my thoughts as to why RED might not offer something like that.
