  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good point. I had an FS700 and shot the hell out of 240fps, so I definitely hear you on kind of getting over slomo. I would love the ability to go up to 48fps, though, with full FOV. And with most of my working being online/compressed/etc, I don't know that the 8K difference would impact a viewer as much as a slow motion shot (obviously assuming the project calls for it). In fact, a few weeks ago I shot 180fps footage for the Minnesota Vikings in their new stadium and today they are bringing me on to shoot a short film conveying the emotion of their biggest game (Vikings vs rival Packers, home turf, brand new stadium, first real game of the season)... and slomo is actually kind of a big part of that. They don't really care if it's finished in 4K or 1080p, but the images wouldn't have the same impact in real-time. And that's where right now I feel like the Scarlet-W hits a sweet spot of giving me a big sensor w/ 5K (great for finishing at 4K) with some slight slomo options at that full FOV...

Cool job man! I understand that in those kind of shoots you need slomo. About the need for 8K. I jumped on RED 4 years ago and everybody said why in the world do you need 4K at this moment. The cool thing is shoots from 4 years ago are still "good" I'm even finishing a couple of things again now in 4K because then they only needed HD.
It will be the same story with 8K. A lot of people will ask why, others will tell you you are crazy but in 2/3/4 years we will all be laughing.

And if it's capped at 8K 30fps it would probably do 50/75 at 7K At somewhat the same fov as scarlet-w

Very true. Looking back, it's almost like thinking "Of course those guys wanted to shoot 4K back then! Look how incredible it is!" and it was probably actually harder to shoot 4K 4+ years ago than it would be to shoot 8K today. I know Mark Pederson has been crunching numbers to show that with drops in hard drive prices and the increase in CPU/GPU power, it's actually not super expensive to do 8K today vs. 4K a couple years ago. That said, one of my concerns is still having enough media in the field. I was comfy with my two 512GB cards at 5K, but I worry that I'll need waaaay more if I'm capturing 8K.

Side note, regarding storage: Just picked up some Seagate 8TB external drives on eBay (NewEgg fulfillment) for $180 each. Need to unload some footage from my RAIDs!

As for higher FPS at 7K/6K, that's what I'm hoping for. If I could get Scarlet-W FOV and get up to the 48/60fps range, I'd be a happy boy!

2 words. Pixel Conversion.

All of this Epic-W news is so exciting.... because I won't be upgrading...

but all of you upgraders ahead of me in the S-W queue will get the hell out of my way!

Exactly my thought on "pixel conversion". They figured out how to use the full sensor in the Scarlet W to do 2k ProRes with essentiially downsizing the image from 5k, so maybe they can in camera output Redcode raw at 4k (or 2k) to the minimag and thus retain higher frame rates while capturing in 8k. I have to say that even at 422HQ the video on my Scarlet W in 2k are indistinguishable to me from the 5k images, probably because of my monitor. Even the stills exported from raw vs ProRes are virtually identical in color, clarity, and file size (JPEGs). So if they can do this real time in camera with pixel binning the raw feed, it would be the best of all worlds, and maybe that is what Jarred is hinting at?

I assume you bought a 6k weapon with the 8k VV upgrade, if so we are going to put a 8k helium in your bodies if you want while you wait for your VV.

There will be three 8ks come october.. the VV Weapon 8k, the Epic-W and the Weapon 8k s35.

And someone's outside my yard with a chainsaw... betcha it's Brent cutting down my internet.
Either due to timing or ROI calculations, those who chose not to make any financial investment on their WMg come October have suddenly gone to B-league? Hope Red would consider these group of customers in future just as MX and Dragons who chose to stay back from WMg are now being given a second (& better) life.

What's that mean? Are you referring to what Jarred said about an image that is cleanly down sampled (evenly divided, 8K to 4K to 2K) being one of the big benefits of capturing 8K? If so, is that a perk that we only get when processing the images in post?

Yes other than Prores out of camera. Partly why the pro res off of Helium is so good.

We always push to the edge of "comfort" for the sake of getting the absolute best image possible. 8K is important. And not just for the blatant resolution.. you discover that after you shoot 8k even if you plan on a 4k or (even more so) a 2k finish. There is something magical that happens with that direct 1:1 or 2:1 or 4:1 pixel oversampling.

But.. if it makes you uncomfortable.. you can always stay with Dragon in the same form factor. It's all about choices and I think we give you the options.
...

Yes, sharper images at even lower resolutions because the low pass filter in Bayer is more at lower resolution sensors (as it spreads to compensate for Bayer and fill factor, and spread the color, because because Bayer only has a color pee pixel. So 8k+ images produce marvelous 4k material, probably like a window, and at 8k you aren't going to notice the low pass filter as much. However, please three color layer pixels. I would lobe to have a 4k 3-5 color layer helium like sensor with 100% fill factor and maybe a low pass filter that spread over the pixel borders by 0.15-10% (but don't tell Graeme). :)

I think we (owner of Sw) will have a LOT of time to save some $$$ as Im sure we will be at the end of the list!

If it lands somewhere in this range of HFR possibilities I'll be a happy camper. Was really excited about 5k 48fps and 4.5/120, but would happily take a small fps penalty in exchange for all the helium goodness. :)

For those of you already rocking a dsmc2, how does it currently handle hfr in ProRes only mode? Can I trade RAW for full fov hfr on choice shots?

On the SW often I film 5k but pro res so to have a final file of 2k.
In this way I have the fov of the 5k backed in the pro res file, honeslty it looks great, if I shot in 4K I arrive to 60fps (pro res only)

Just look at the camera's spec sheet, it's all listed there

I'm thinking it will be the same situation of MG vs Carbon. 225MB/s for Epic-W 8k, and 300MB/s for the full Weapon Helium.

225MB/s is still really good red codes and frame rates at 8k
