  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

Dragon has actually had the longest "shelf life" of any sensors we have made before it.. and it continues to be the workhorse of the industry and will continue to do so for some time.

Our lineup will become simplified come October.. as it is getting a bit confusing with all the options.

Simple is always good, that's why I like In-N-Out burger. Do you want one or two patties? Although that hidden menu is nice.

Looking forward to October. For my own perspective, it would be great to have an idea whether the planned stop to upgrades EPIC->WEAPON will happen before or after the camera line-up will be more simplified in October.
That influences greatly whether it makes sense to invest now in moving to DSMC2 or wait when the new cameras are out and decide then what is the best option for what I need.

I don't need to know what cameras will be or what prices. At the moment, based on what I read here and some assumptions, dragon sensor sizes and sensor crops are more appealing to me than helium. I will probably go the same route that is available now.You never know, but that is my idea now. I just would like to know if that route will be an option once October comes, or if that will end prior to it. I am not sure it is something that you guys are ready to disclose, but I think it would helpful to a bunch of people here figuring out the timing to invest in new equipment.

I agree. I feel the same about Dragon being a better sensor than Helium. I care about the pixels and their size more than quantity of them. I think Helium will be more noisy because of the pixel size.

Not necessarily. Fuji and Sony have both found ways to pack more pixels in without raising noise, and one of the big things Sony did was switch to back-side illumination. As lame as the name is, and as obvious as it sounds, moving the logic circuitry behind the photo sites instead in front enables a lot more efficiency in light gathering, and hence less noise with the same photosite pitch. Lowering the heat in the electronics with cooler processors and all helps as well.

BSI seems like an obvious thing to do, but the reason it took so long is that it required overcoming some difficult engineering challenges in semiconductor manufacturing, almost like basically building a processor on top of another. It was actually quite an achievement to devise a way to do it in volume.

I'm guessing that the Helium sensor is BSI, though I don't have enough information to call that more than a slightly more educated guess than a random WAG.

I want to see a test between them. And i mean real test, not easy sunny day outside shot.

Thanks for all the hints! Telling yet vague haha.

Jarred/Brent, should we be keeping an eye out for an August update or are the teasers here what would be in the update anyway?

With all this anticipation for October (and Jarred saying the lineup will become simplified--when we already know that change includes a new S35 Helium, right?) I can't help but get a little worried about my Scarlet-W preorder... those S35 Heliums shipped pretty damn quick!

I am feeling a bit the same way. I am on a plane heading back east after spending a week on a shoot in Los Angeles. Would have loved to have been able to arrange a personal pickup of my Scarlet-W!!!

Good. I'm still trying to decide on the Sidekick Latitude or the OMOD with Latitude built-in.

I was too... ended up going this route to be a litle more modular. I'm still planning on getting one of the OMODs with XLRs. I figured with the Latitude in a separate module I'd have the option of yanking the OMOd to save weight when we're running the camera on a gimbal or when I'm backpacking.

You never know with Jarred…but I think most update material was already been posted in this thread…

Josh, HELIUMs shipping is a good thing for DRAGON-based folks. Means demand shifting from one sensor line to the other. And, anything that takes even a little pressure off the DRAGON lines should make everyone happy…

I think we are both worried that while that is fantastic news, those cameras won't be shipping until October, (as you say, relieving the Dragon pressure) and October is a bit further out than we were hoping. But Hey!! Cameras are shipping, so maybe some of us December 10 guys will get lucky sooner!

Go back and read this post from Jarred.

"Aside from all you filmmakers and rental houses we have pretty substantial broadcast, military and "non public" customers that gobble up a ton of sensors who now are already pulling Heliums which makes it really good for you all."

Super cool...missed that detail....can't wait!

How is s35 lens coverage of vista, only some lens or most lens, without issues?

And yes definite upgrade path from 6K Dragon WPN to 8K s35.

What broadcast products are those Jarred?

I actually kind of meant that I'm not sure how to interpret Jarred's mention of simplifying the camera lineup. I assumed it meant that they wouldn't be offering so many different cameras (Raven, Scarlet-W, Mg Weapon, CF Weapon, VV Weapon, S35 Helium), so does that mean some cameras will be changing or going away? But then again, it could just mean that they are going to clarify and maybe separate Helium cameras from Dragon cameras.

By the time October rolls around, some guys will have had 6 months with their Scarlet-Ws... I guess I was just hoping to get in early on one of the tick-tock cycles and I'm not sure if the "tick" is about to become a "tock" in October. (Tocktober? sorry, I'll stop!)
