There are Bela Tarr fans here? Consider me stunned. In a good way.
Satantango is such a great film; seen it twice in theatres (two intermissions, so you're not glued to the seats for 7+ hours straight), and would happily go and see it again, if it were playing nearby. And yes, the opening shot to Werckmeister Harmonies is amazing, as is the rest of the movie.
Also, props to Tim Hole for mentioning Claire Denis; she's one of the best working filmmakers out there right now, and makes gorgeous, haunting films, aided immensely by her amazing cinematographer Agnes Godard (no relation to JLG). Beau Travail and L'Intrus are two of my favorite recent films. And her most recent two (35 Rhums and White Material) are both masterpieces as well.
Would also recommend anything by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (who just won the Palme D'Or at Cannes). Syndromes and a Century in particular is amazing, but his other films are really excellent, too.
