THE STORY BEYOND THE STILL
Introducing the first user-generated HD Video Contest where photographers become filmmakers, and we all see beyond the still. To kick off the contest, Canon asked photographer, Vincent Laforet, to interpret what story lives beyond this still and to tell that story with the new Canon EOS 7D. His will be the first chapter of seven, each ending with a still photograph for the next aspiring filmmaker to interpret. Posing the question to everyone, what do you see beyond the still?

Submissions for the next chapter are due February 11.

I just love the way the image quality drops once we move from the still to the video - you see less into the shadows and the resolution really drops off.

@Graeme.. There is NO comparison between a nice Red One and well..DSLRs, unless you want a good laugh, eh? Like comparing Super8 to Super35mm? Eventually.. Super8 to IMAX?

..Vincent's video bored me so quickly.. I didn't get beyond the 5sec. mark but thought I'd share the contest here anyway since many Red owners also have or shoot Canon DSLR video.

I think the whole concept is wonderful as it forces people to see that the admirable stills quality of the Canon cameras is utterly destroyed by their video processing. I remember on Vincent's first 5D2 shoot he also shot some stills framed identical to the video, and I took those stills and cropped and scaled to the same dimensions of the video. The stills looked "oh so much better" than the video I was flabberghasted. I wondered what on earth Canon could be doing to their sensor in video mode to get it to look so bad. Now, of course, we know about the brutal h264 codec and the line skipping etc.

If I was Canon (which I'm not) I'd not be getting people to compare the video and stills - I'd be strictly avoiding such a comparison.

I, on the other hand, have no problem getting people to look at full rez stills extracted from RED R3D files.
