Hi all

I'm beginning the process of searching for a composer for an upcoming feature film. I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread with suggestions of composers you have worked with or know about. It would also be great to share links to their work and maybe also comment on the whole process of collaboration. If you are a composer feel free to post links to your work. I look forward to all your recommendations.

Okay, I just added a bunch more composers to the original list on the second post. This is all very exciting to me because I'm discovering some terrifically talented people. I hope other chime in with more suggestions. Now that the list is becoming more substantial I decided to implement a system of sorts as to whom to include. These are my first thoughts and are definitely open to suggestions:

INCLUSION CRITERIA

1. I think if a composer has interacted in any way with the RedUser community they should be automatically included :)

2. For everyone else, I feel that they should have at least 10 IMDB credits as composers. Composing a feature film is a daunting process, so at least a certain amount of experience should be a requirement. The 10 credits can be of shorts, TV, video games, etc.

3. The composer should have a site where one can hear their music. With this in mind, most links I include are to their demo page and not to the main splash page.

4. For each composer I tried to list one sample credit (their most prominent one). I have purposely excluded huge films they may have worked on in other capacities like Music Supervisors, Orchestratos, etc. I feel the focus should be on composing.

5. Geography is not a concern. However the composer should speak enough English at a professional level in order to work with anyone who frequents this site.

6. And finally, I am arranging everyone in order of Number of IMDB credits. While this in of itself doesn't mean anything scientific, it does give a rough order of experience. For those looking for the most prominent composers and have the funds to hire them, then they can concentrate on the first half of the list. For those starting out or without a sufficient budget, they could try their luck with the emerging talent of the second half.

Here's a few more, closer to you than Australia. I listened to their demo stuff on www.zoetrope.com "The Virtual Studio." but it was a few years back. I much liked most of the pieces. I don't know who of them have prospered since other than Lev "Ljova" Zhurbin, whose demo was a live recorded piece performed by a small symphonic orchestra whilst he was still at Juilliard. I have since seen his name in a movie credit. Some others on Zoetrope also had prior screen credits and some have also progressed.

If you join Zoetope, you should be able to look up "The Music Building" and the sub-site "Film Scoring" and be able to access their bios.

--- and for the sake of a little personal aggrandisement and vanity but definitely not for consideration of myself for a movie underscore gig - this is one I submitted to Zoetrope myself for the helpful feedback and learning experience the site yielded. I do a bit of my own stuff as an interest, mainly pairs. I muchly like film underscores and some music written for commercial advertising. Whilst it earns a dollar for the composer, it seems a waste after the campaign has run and it goes into the bin or an archive if lucky.

Influences in this one, the late John Barry and the late Brian May. My age is showing.

I've worked with Tiko Lasola for about year now on 5 or 6 different projects, and several more on the way. I can't sing his praises enough and highly recommend him.

What I love about the working relationship with him is that he'll take a piece of inarticulate direction from me, usually a reference or some sort of feeling, and turn in into a pretty brilliant melody. I'll also mix up the genres on him, and he has no problem mastering them. For instance we'll need some latin influenced score for one project, or a big band piece for another and he'll nail it. For our next one, he'll be tackling a Caribbean score for us.

He's really attentive to a filmmaker's needs, takes direction without any ego and couldn't be easier to work with.

My .02

I wanted to thank everyone for your great suggestions. I am going all out on my search for a composer. From what I have heard so far there is a lot of incredibly talented people out there. It's definitely worth it to explore each composer's website.

My dear friend Mychael Danna is great. Too bad I can't afford to hire him for even my own projects!

http://www.mychaeldanna.com

Thanks for the suggestion Bob! While I would also love to hire Mychael Danna, I have a feeling he's also too expensive for our budget. I came to realise this very sad fact when I saw that many of his albums are already in my music collection.
