  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

the red primes?

Front dia. 110mm. Same as the Cooke S4.
All new optical design. (not a rehouse)
Optical quality comparable to modern Zeiss.
A bit on the heavy side at 4.1 lbs. for the 85mm.

Thanks, Matt. This is very helpful. How do you know the weight of the Red 85mm? Was this info posted somewhere?

Red Primes

Red Primes

The lenses, including the 300mm are completely redesigned, nothing to do with the original 300mm lens, they all now share the same incredible great build quality of the 18-85 zoom, and after seen it in person and playing with it for a bit, I now understand how Jim could have made such a statment about it, when He said that even so He owns over 500 lenses the 18-85 was the best one of all, and there for all new lenses, including obviously the new Primes, would be build upon the same specs.

The lenses are very MP like, just a bit smaller, but just a bit, absolutely love the design and fill of the 18-85, and even so I prefer only Primes, I'll be getting this zoom.

The pricing for the Primes it will not be as for the RED store.

The Prime lenses will be $5,000 each, if you buy only three of them then they will cost you just that $5,000 each so $15,000 for the Three, but if you buy the fourth one as well at $5,000 then RED will trow in the Fifth one for Free, making a set of Five lenses for $20,000, hope I haven't confused any one, but this is as it is going down as for post NAB.

As we all know anything goes with RED, and so far I must say I'm very pleased of how they have changed things around.

Ciao

I was impressed with the 18-85, held and messed with the one in the case. The mechanics looked and worked well and it appears to be an overall very solid build. Could use a 30' mark between 20' and 50' but there is easily room for it and this lens was a prototype. Very heavily built, very solid, very promising definately a step up from the current zooms. Please note with lenses much more often then not heavy=good as it is simple physics and just a fact of life for now with lenses.

Primes also look quite good. Hard to really make too much of an opinion until they can be tested but as per usual red appears to be learning and improving with each step they take. I would love to do some comparison tests pitting the red primes against much higher priced options from the rental house here. I would also like to throw them on a film camera and do some head to head tests with them against cooke's, master primes... The only downside I see with them right now is the slow wide lens. I know red has heard this complaint again and again, its just a 18mm T1.9 would be a much better fit.

I also have to say I really liked the 18-85mm. I'm personally not planning on buying it because I already have a Cooke 18-100. But man, it sure does look nice and I liked the feel of it on the demo camera in the tent too.

The primes look great. I'm going to get the new 300mm when it ships and I have a reservation for the prime set. Hopefully they turn out as good as they look and I can afford them when the time comes. Heh.

Are any of the RED lenses shipping yet?

Thanks!

Ketch, are you sure about Red allowing us to buy single primes? I asked that question at NAB and they were unsure.. That would be great if its true..

I agree with what everyone is saying about the 18-85.. Its a massive, impressive beast of a lens. I hope it ships out soon

Well, I'm as sure ... but as we all know everything can change at RED ... and chances are ... it will!!!

This is the info I have, and have no reasons to believe otherwise, so yes you can buy a single Prime for 5k, and if you buy 4 of them, the fifth one is free.

The 18-85 is going to be something to amaze in the zoom range, its weight might trow off some one, for some shooting styles, but then again when you consider that RED, or better yet Epic, are 6 to 10lb cameras, then you can still do a lot with the RED/18-85 combination, I know that I will put that baby to work very soon, its just an impressive lens and it fills like it looks, fantastic.

I was already very impressed with the image and build quality of the 300, but as Jim says, this are even better, well then you got me there.

Ciao

I'd like to use the 18-85 for handheld use.. Laughable as that may seem, I think its possible for short stints..

coming in 2nd wave 15mmT2.8 & 18mm T1.9
(page 6 ..small print below lens )

Curious as to if people just missed this, or has it been discussed elsewhere? I would have thought this would be all over the boards, considering how much discussion there was demanding it:

Red has announced that the prime set will include an 18mm T1.9.

Download the NAB brochure, look at the bottom right of page 6. The "first wave" of the prime set includes 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 100mm (all T1.9), and of course the 300mm T2.9. The "second wave" includes a 15mm T2.8 and an 18mm T1.9.

I´m a bit confused about this (and having ordered the prime set before NAB).
There are some infos about a professional set and something else (non-professional??).
Also the first "wave" of prime set includes the 300mm T2.9. But that would be 6 lenses. As generous as Red is, but this would be a tad too much to expect.

The "second wave" has two more lenses, so I guess there will be a changed set from the first wave listing.

Anyway, it will all become clear in time I´m sure.

Certainly it´s going to be even more exciting in the next few months....
