  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Red Gunner

I don´t know what you eat Zakaree, but if you eat meat of any kind, it most likely comes from a "Killing machine" of some sort.(And not to mention eggs... what the hens have to go through)

Even if he ate meat, the fact where it came from wouldn't speak of him, but society, because he wouldn't be responsible for food industry's profiteering techniques. It's often tried switching responsibility from food industry to people who eat it, which is ludicrous. So anyone who eats meat is guilty of animal torture ?

When speaking about the circle of life, "mass killing machines' are the exact proof. They are in the exact opposite of circle of life, where food is not prepared in balance with nature. Human level of conscience has a responsibility to the rest of the living creatures of this planet as well as the planet itself, which humans have been, and still are greatly disregarding.

That can opener thing is insane!!! HAHAH!! Dude.. I need to catch this show more often! :)

I love this show! This is REAL drama... watching to see if they sink themselves is enough drama!!! Just hope they are getting sufficient protein in their diets to think straight. ;)

Damn "research" needs to be stopped. How much pull could the whaling industry have? Just change the law already. I don't mind eating meat... trust me, I was born in Argentina where we practically eat steak with our coffee. But aren't these whales an endangered species? why did they make it illegal to begin with? Remember that this is all about a loop hole. The intention to ban whaling (in this area?) is clearly stated.

And about the whole vegetarian thing: I got no issue here, trust me, I support vegetarians! Eat whatever the heck you want man. However don't lie to yourself about plants... they are alive, and yes, they feel... they have gotten EKG readings from them right? For all you know you are chewing them while still ALIVE for heavens sake! Don't mean to upset, just bring perspective.

It's a fact of life that only the extremists ever stand up and fight for a cause. Moderates, those who should be in charge of human laws and morals are, by definition, too moderate to make a stand. Those of us standing by should not criticise those actively doing something - albeit flawed.

After 30 years of martial arts, trying to develop a "passive" style based on perfect defence, it's become more and more obvious to me that, sooner or later, you're gonna have to hurt the other guy if you want to stop him hurting you. Walk quietly and carry a big stick.

Darwin's theory of random mutation holds true and our intelligence is the flawed mutation that dooms our species to extinction. You just have to get your head around the time-frame to understand that. Unfortunately, unlike the dinosaurs, we'll be taking a whole lot of other species down with us.

As for Pawel's straw poll, no for me on the Gunner. I'm more into the idea of an ETRs that shoots cine. One camera to rule them all.

It's propaganda that helps keep the $$$ flowing in to the green groups bank accounts, how does anyone here know if a whale species will become extinct?
You heard it through the media....right?
I'd suggest killing your pet cat and saving our Tuna stocks from being destroyed for cat food.
Sea Sheppard and crew are just dumb pirates

As for RED gunner...what exactly is it?

The younger generation to whom we have a responsibility to leave this planet in a better state than we found it have a view and are speaking out. Its about time we listened.

Abolishing whaling is a small but critical part of ensuring we protect our environment and the creatures with whom we share this planet.

Young Severn spoke there with the vast ignorance and absolute certainty that can only be sustained by a thirteen year old. She is little more than a ventriloquist dummy for David, having had her head filled with propaganda since she was born.

The "younger generation" shouldn't have any say in the matter until they actually have enough knowledge and understanding to have something worthwhile to say- and not just spout rhetoric that someone else has poured into their head. Seriously, how much life advice would you take from your thirteen year old self? Would you let that younger you take control of your bank account, job search, love life... hell, is there any area of your life that you think would be better run by the you that hasn't lived through and learned everything that life has taught you since your fourteenth birthday?

Yes, I fully agree with the desire to leave the world a better place than you found it- but the crassly manipulated ignorance and emotion of a younger generation should carry no weight to a rational person. We are the younger generation of the past and they will be the old guard of the future... giving us special status when our ability to make informed and rational decisions is at its absolute nadir is a stupid idea.

So, Clint. At what age does one's opinion become worthwhile?

So Shane, was it at thirteen that you peeked in your ability to understand and reason? Was that your personal pinnacle of knowledge? That wasn't an ad hominem attack, I want you to seriously ask yourself that. Would you feel comfortable with giving even your twenty year old self charge of all your decisions today? I respect a young persons right to have an opinion on any subject they care to... but they don't have the right to have those opinions taken seriously.

I tend to have a rather libertarian respect for youth's autonomy and rights to direct their own personal sphere. I also would put more responsibility on them for the consequences of their actions as they impact others. I don't hold their opinions in high regard when it extends out to larger societal sphere. It isn't a lack of respect for their intellect, but an understanding that they don't have the knowledge and life experience to actually form an opinion that is worthwhile. It can be a foundation to build toward a worthwhile opinion and for that it should be encouraged. Just don't hand them something they have not earned.

That extends throughout a lifetime as well. If you need a second opinion on that brain tumour do not ask me, I am ignorant in that area, have no experience in it and my opinion is worthless. Likewise, if you want to know who is the sparkliest vampire in the Twilight movies then the opinion of millions of 13 year old girls will be worthwhile- and my opinion would again be worthless. It is unlikely that there is a 13 year old on the planet who can make an informed and rational contribution to a complex and difficult subject like global warming or the Machiavellian economic manipulations of the various governments over the last year. Hell, there probably isn't one in ten thousand 31 year olds who could do that.

Until senescence starts robbing a person of their capacity to learn and reason they will know more and have a greater capacity to understand the issues as they age. There is no rational reason to give credence to people based on the fact that they have had less time to learn and think about the issues. That is silly and, I believe, harmful.

I may be coming across as nastier in temperament than I mean to be but I am a little weary of the celebration of ignorance that is the cult of youth.

When it becomes backed with years of scientific research on the subject. Florien's fantastic underwater images show a Humpback Whale swimming freely and cuts to a different species being harpooned.....dramatic effect but a load of crap IMO....propaganda once again, the Humpback whale population is not in danger as it once was from the American Whaling ships that devastated the population around the world.

My point, Clint, is that youth is relative. To me, you yourself represent impetuous youth, in all its over confident glory yet you damn a 13 year old for being too young to form or hold a valid opinion. Age is like speed - those above you are fools and those below you are idiots. Perhaps wisdom comes with age. Perhaps perspective comes with more.

Hey Vince, anyone who's worked in this business long enough knows better than to believe any edited footage presented as documentary evidence. Every single news story, every single doco ever made has been skewed somewhat towards the preformed ideals of the filmmakers. The accuracy of the images and sounds presented on-screen matter little, these are only tools to present a position. Make your own mind up on the position - as most of us have already done. Likewise, anyone who's worked in this business long enough knows that documentaries don't change people's minds - they just serve to further set into place the opinions held at the outset. The actual process of change is that which takes place in the mind of the filmmaker as exposure to the facts first-hand often serves to alter their position they previously thought unshakable.

Yes it is relative, but that relativity is grounded in reality.

Let's take a subject of considerably less than global significance. Say you have a commercial that needs to be edited. The client has budgeted a million dollars for it and that is not small change for them or for the production company. It is a professional job that should be treated as such. Hell, if it is screwed up you may lose your job.

Do you know any 13 year olds that you would hand the editing job off to and walk away confident that it will be done to the clients satisfaction? Now, that is a comparatively simple and straightforward task and I am sure there are more than a few 13 year old prodigies that could pull it off. I also feel that your client and the production company would be justifiably worried about this.

Now take that rather limited task that has a minor impact to a vanishingly small number of people and expand it to a task that confounds experts that have studied it for thousands of hours, that will cost trillions of dollars and that will impact billions of people- quite probably leading to the deaths of millions of them no matter which way you go on it.

While it is incomplete and simplified, there is some merit to the meme of 10,000 hours of study/practice to become and top expert in a non-trivial field of endeavour. This would be a spectrum where those more suited to the task take less time and the less suited take more- but 10K hours seems to be a workable number. Now, you don't need to be the top in your field to have a worthwhile opinion and someone with only 5K hours could have valuable input. A person who is intellectually suited to the task and who has a relatable field of expertise could have very worthwhile opinions after only a couple thousand hours of study.

Barring the outliers, the opinion of the 10K of study should be weighted greater than the 5K which in turn should be given more consideration than the 2K.

I actually don't think it is healthy for a 13 year old to have spent even two thousand hours on one subject of study- and dangerous for them to have focused ten thousand hours of their short life. Now, between the age of 13 and 20- if you want to be a top expert in your field then it would behove you to put that 5K of study into that span.

It may be that we are talking in cross purposes here using different definitions of "worthwhile". I see this discussion as being about a person's opinion having an objective worth to the community at large. In this instance I would define it as being of sufficient value for that larger community to invest time and money. While Severn was passionate about what she was saying and cute as a button while saying it... I think it would be ridiculous to have her materially impact the lives of billions of people and trillions of dollars.

Now, if we are talking about the opinion being subjectively worthwhile to the young person themselves... then that isn't really worthwhile to anyone else. They can believe that carbon dioxide is a pollutant, that humans are not part of nature and that the Jonas Brothers are the most important people on the planet - and that would be as valid to them as any other opinion they may hold.

I hold that their opinion on massively complex global problems should not impact the policy and action of others- and that is the only way I see to reasonably gauge how worthwhile their opinion is.

Lagrange was a math teacher at the age of 16 and by his 19th year had laid out Méchanique Analytique, his master work. only centuries later a new kind of late aged children have come to exist. the silliness is in trying to build compartments to put us in. I say your too old for my planet. and too closed off.

Lagrange was an outlier. Teaching is not breaking ground and by his nineteenth year, at which point he was no longer a youth but a man, he had probably spent well over ten thousand hours perfecting his maths.

So from this I can assume that you believe that gathering knowledge and contemplating a subject does not engender a greater understanding of that subject. I disagree and so you have placed me in your compartment for those that are too old for your planet and have judged my opinion to be worthless.

The Red Gunner consists of a long arm style shoulder stock on which you mount the Red camera. As long as the rig is light enough and the shot is short enough, it would be fast pointing and stable.

Since it looks so much like a fire arm, its use should be limited to places where you won't be mistaken for throwing bullets rather than catching photons. There are probably some who take a sick pleasure in causing this fear but I hope they are in the minority.
