I feel like I made the right choice by picking Adobe...I just bought the adobe production premium package around the time of NAB, and I am very impressed. But do you know what impresses me most? Their speed to get things out the door and their dedication to being on top of the industry.

I feel like Adobe is becoming sort of the "RED" company of NLE...because they seem to really have a handle on what the needs are now, but equally important, they are ready and making a point to welcome the future. I was thoroughly impressed that they had an epic plugin for premiere very shortly after epic-Ms were being sent out. But I had felt this way about them for a while. Then a colleague of mine sent me this article and video, and I just felt I should share it, especially in light of FCPX is out and it seems as though some people are a little disappointed... I read this article and watched the video in it, and it reminds me of the innovative mindset and attitude that RED has.

I really enjoy working with my adobe suite. And of course things aren't perfect, no NLE is, but I think I am going to stick with them for a long time, as long as they continue to show that dedication to being on top and ahead of the industry. I have a feeling they will. Thats it, I just felt like that needed to be posted.

Anyone else feel the same or similar?

I agree that Adobe is way ahead of the curve in all things post, especially native format editing of every format that exists, and dynamic linking between all of the Adobe apps.

That is where I am headed now that FCPro-imoviestudio-x has jumped the shark.

Solomon. Thanks for this post. I was just wondering what setup you use. Mac or Windows, CPU, Ram, Hard disks, RAID, etc...

I have really enjoyed working with Adobe CS5, I love being able to save space by using the r3d's directly, and it looks like its time to move to CS5.5 since we will be getting our Epic camera shortly.

I currently have been using CS5 on a Mac 2x3 Ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon with 16gb of Ram connected to a server (Gigabit) and internal hard drives (Stripped).

Thanks!

My pleasure man! Well embarrassing as it is, I am currently using my laptop for editing while I am saving up for my new workstation I am building. (I am not even going to list my current desktop specs (vomit))

I use a (laptop) windows 7 pro, i7 2.4 6 gigs of ddr3 1333 7200rpm I use an esata 7200 external for now...

The setup I am building soon is a windows 7 pro, Intel Xeon E5645 X 2 (after hyper threading...24 cores, 12 physical cores at 2.6) 24 gigs of DDR3 ECC 1600 my OS will be 2 500gigs raid 0, my external work raid, I have not yet chosen, i am stuck on a few different options at the moment... but it will probably be 5 drives 7200RPM 2tbs each. I may have the same setup internally as a working spot, then dump off to the backup Raid.

Honestly I have not had to work with alot of RED footage, but now that scarlet is coming, and I plan on renting the EPIC for some future projects, its time to gear up! But believe it or not, even without raiding...my little laptop handles epic footage with very low hiccups! but definitely not good enough to for a real project, but tests have gone quite well.

I LOVE the integrated little red cine x controls within premiere...that is just amazing...I hope that feature is updated with updates from RCX that RED releases...I think that would make life reeeallly easy. :)

What do you use for client monitoring? Does it interact well with Blackmagic/AJA products?

I dont know about Blackmagic or AJA, I would imagine so, but for right now, I have a 1080 HD monitor outputing as a monitor through the HDMI out on my card (or the DVI out on my other older video card I also have in there :P) Works just fine....Utilizes full 1080 space, easy to setup...have not had a need to buy anything like blackmagic yet.

I use an nvidia quadro card feeding 10bit video over display port to a dreamcolor monitor. Never had a problem with Ppro or scratch.

Blackmagic and AJA are both supported on Premiere and After Effects.
For instance, you need to use the red presets in Premiere to benefit from cuda hardware acceleration with N'Vidia cards and 8 bit output with Geforce or 10 bit output monitoring with Quadro. So you can't use BM or Aja cards for monitoring native R3D in Premiere.
Adobe is working on that.

That is exactly what I wanted to know, thank you! I've been looking into going over to premiere because of its R3D capabilities, but had trouble getting it to output through my Decklink Studio. Guess I'll be sticking with FCP 7 in the mean time. The quadro card to a dreamcolor isn't an option as I need truly color accurate display for what I'm doing and quadro doesn't offer it and from what I understand dreamcolor only fakes it.

Does anybody know if Adobe is also having problems with Red Rocket support? I have one of those in my system as well - CS 5.5 recognizes it's there, but won't initialize it... I just upgraded to CS 5.5 and updated the Rocket driver to the one they release a last week.

Has Adobe incorporated the Redrocket into the workflow? Two specific questions:
1. allowing red rocket acceleration
2. allowing a monitor out for viewing redrocket monitor AND using acceleration?

**if not, anytime soon? Basically, my question is around workflow...I always push out a Prores file in the end....so working with RCX & Storm--doing a one lite; then pushing out a Prores 422HQ file.....Then going into FCP ---that's my current flow---AND ---it's FAST.

SO.....is there any way using Premier to keep this FAST pace workflow by utilizing the Redrocket card AND Matrox MXO2 LE ??

I think Premiere uses the Rocket only for realtime decoding of the R3D,allowing full res playback and better performance for the CPU and GPU for other tasks;monitoring through the N'Vidia card.

Right, I don't want to monitor through the card, I just want to use it for real time decoding (I have a BlackMagic card for monitoring). If the RedRocket won't initialize, I'm not getting those benefits...

I would say that I feel the exact opposite about Adobe products. Read this thread about EXR implementation inside of Photoshop: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/369637

Gotta love how the Adobe employee (Chris Cox) acts.

But hey, everybody is entitled to their own opinions. Having said that, CS5.5 was a small step in the right direction.

If you are using the latest driver then you need the labs plugin for Epic. http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/redepic_importer/ Remember only one app at a time can use the rocket so quit RedCine X first.

Cheers

I can see how you feel, but I refuse to draw a conclusion about an entire company based on one incident and one employee, but yeah thats not cool. Plus that was from 08? I am referring to the attitude in the video I posted and the current rapid growth, I think due to their speed to get features and compatibility with as many cameras/cards/system they can.

But I do respect your opinion! Thanks for sharing! :)

Hi Johnny,

Not sure regarding the matrox card but if this were me I wouldn't even bother transcoding to ProRes if you were going straight into Premiere for Editing. I would:

1. Pull R3D's through RedCine-X and do a one light and save that info to the RMD metadata.
2. Close RedCine-X and open Premiere and import all the R3D's. Premiere will read the metadata from the RMD's and apply your one light looks to all of the footage automatically. If you have your RedRocket configured correctly (and RedCine-X is closed), Premiere will then use your RedRocket for debayering your image and will then pass it over to the GPU and CPU for anything else you do to it, levels, curves etc :)

Means you shouldn't have to transcode a single thing until your final export from Premiere.

If your taking it to a grading suite after the edit, I wouldn't even bother doing any effects adjustments in Premiere. Just export your EDL and take your R3D's with you to the grade and you will be grading with your original raw files from the shoot (with your one light adjustments of course :) )
