  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Red Box

This is what Red should make -

THE RED BOX

A small breakout out box that decodes and scales REDCODE RAW out to HD-SDI.

specs:

FW800 IN - plug in any drive with .r3d files (footage)

CF slot - plug in a CF card with .r3d files (footage)

SD slot - plug in SD card with LOOKS defined on REDCINE and/or a TIFF for WATERMARKING dailies

a small touch screen that allows you to select:

SD OUT - center crop, letterbox and anamorphic
HD OUT - SINGLE (422) or DUAL LINK - (444)
META DATA BURN IN (timecode, or other meta data fields)

2:40 and 1:85 mask options

headphone jack
component out
Dual HD-SDI out
HDMI out
AES/EBU audio out

RS422 deck control

Nick Rashby could help build such a gadget .... use this for making dailies, feeding projectors, etc.

Send this to AJA, they just might make it with or for RED.

Buckets of Cash

Buckets of Cash

I guess this sounds great for post houses with lots of money. but isnt this the kinda thing that red is getting us away from. weren't we all complaining about expensive decks.

I guess the fact you don't have to have something like this helps a great deal. I'd be more interested in a combined raid box and cf reader that would verify data integrity and let us offload to harddrives quickly. I know this can be done with a laptop and regular cf reader but a device that could do that and also backup that data to LTO or Blu Ray in a single box would be nice. just for peace of mind

I think this is more of a specialty item / targeted towards the needs of a segment of Red users. Not everyone needs (color corrected) dailies, not everyone needs SDI output, SD downconvert, 3:2 pulldown, etc. etc. Post houses tend to need that.

2- It seems like you could either:
A- Get a Scratch system.

B- Go with a Kona/FCP system. The features that are missing are:
A- Real-time 3-D LUT?
B- Metadata/timecode burn-in.
C- High-quality HD output. But to decode 4k Redcode + debayer in real-time at highest quality would be difficult / costly.

"Post houses tend to need that" yes that is correct.

But there needs to be a solid, fast back-end in place for many folks to feel comfortable to let you shoot with RED. Specifically the high-end markets.

I find it very interesting that the #1 concern I have heard from different client types is exactly that - color corrected dailies. Fast color corrected dailies.

A portable break out box would be killer.

AJA Kona 3s already do 2K. And they of course already have hardware accelerated DVCPro HD and HDV built in. So I would imagine implementing REDCODE is something they would hopefully consider.
I am not an engineer, so I could be off here - but I think you would need the decoder on silicon, on the board. So, I am 99% sure AJA would need to build a new board for 2K full quality from Redcode Raw in realtime. But you should be able to play 2K proxy at a lower quality deocde out the Kona 3 ... I think. We'll start testing all things Kona next week.

Meantime, maybe Graeme could give us the down low ..?

For dailies, I think 4K is a little much. It would be interesting though... :D

2- Mark, what about...

Redcode RAW decodes to 2K in real-time, with timecode and metadata burn-in.

You play this through a Kona3... real-time downconvert. I don't know if the Kona will give you the option of letterbox, center crop, anamorphic (presumably it does).

CC-wise you'd be limited to the 3-way CC and Redcine integration from within FCP (white balance and maybe some other things).

2b- Maybe Redcode RAW would benefit from 3:2 pulldown with dual TC burn. This is only if you need to deal with old editing systems that ingest via SD-SDI (because you can't send 24p over SD-SDI).

As I understand it, the Kona accelerates DVCPro HD and HDV by doing the scaling to full raster HD in hardware, taking that load off the CPU. There is no hardware help with the codec. This would obviously not help REDCODE.

Just based on the fact that Ted used to work at AJA, and Red has made statements about AJA as a partner publicly, one can't help but wonder....

A realtime hardware box with GUARANTEED performance (no dropped frames) with HD/SD outputs on a variety of taps, with metadata overlays, reticles, title safe, etc would be awesome, Give us lots of choices. Available as a standalone box or as a hmm....Kona Red.

With, what is it now? 2,000-3,000 RED reservations? That's a lot of people (sales) needing a smooth 2K/4K work-flow. Mike, excellent idea with the Kona Red.

This device could also hook up to the Red Projector/Displays for preview/review. I'm all for a low price, but it might be worth paying slightly more if it could output 4k to a projector. Red could become the standard at Theatres, It would need esata though, and some method of encryption, but then you could just take your red footage to your nearest 4k cinema house and plug in your e-sata drive and you'd be set.

There already is a standard for digital projection, and it encompasses 2K and 4K projection. It was partially written by and is supported by every major studio, every company that is equipping digital projection venues, all the major projector manufacturers, and the SMPTE. It also has all the security that's absolutely needed that you aren't considering. I have no doubt that it will also be supported by whatever projection equipment Red chooses to manufacture as well.

Hey that rocks! Great for 1080p (even dual) on set. It can sit on the dolly.
They say it has an optical input for RED? I havent heard of this, and isn't necessary for REDCODE. Is it for RAW recording???
How would this work?

That is only for the uncompressed raw port.

This is NOT the Red Box of my dreams. The codex is for 4K uncompressed. What I want is for REDCODE RAW.

Dear Red Team -

Now that you are past the Build 16 mark and TC support & embedded audio are getting squared away ....

Please consider making a CF/Drive R3D playout box ASAP!

We basically need the "back half of the camera" and a an update to allow us to "PLAY ALL" - so that the entire contents of a CF card or REDDRIVE will play out HDSDI (422 or 444) in 2K debayer quality.

It would be genius to ADD A CHECKBOX TO PLAY DOWN 30 SECONDS OF BARS AND TONE prior to playing contents of drive or card.

$4999 - you will sell these all day long.

And for the record - when everybody trades in their EPICS - you have lots of extra parts.

This allows post houses everywhere to play REDCODE to tape and projection in RT - and offers advantages in the field as well.

You guys already have all the hard work done - just spin off another product.

I've been begging for this in other posts.
All the silly noise about workflows would go away.
Yes please. I'll buy one.
Cheers,
Harry

Sounds like the Red Ray box to me.... for $1000 too! Red Ray seems to have CF card slot in the back, I'm sure it's easy to add the RedDrive LEMO plug there as well to cover all bases then bam! Sold by the 1000's.... hell, as Red owners we could buy ten then sell them on to clients as they decided they wanted one, no wait.

Cheers,

Paul
