The Reason RED won't certify IMS is

(1) The IMS is available immediately and too straight forward and RED only certify complex mounts that 'are shipping tomorrow.'
(2) IMS sounds too much like PMS and the staff at Red are getting just a bit too irritated to think about this at the moment. IF YOU DON'T MIND!
(3) IMS has been mistaken for the IMF and the staff at RED are worried about their current credit rating.
(4) IMS could be undercover for the IRS and Red are concerned that supporting multiple lenses with relative ease may arouse suspicion.
(5)(Please insert reason here)

i thought it was because p&s technik simply hasn't sent one to RED to evaluate. pretty dumb on their part. their website doesn't even mention that you'll void the RED warranty. pretty careless if you ask me, no matter how good the product is.

[EDIT: I NOTICED THIS IS IN THE IMS THREAD TOO. HMMM.]

...Which I would like to have removed when the audio board is installed rather than have the i/pins installed, as I find the utility virtually nil and I would like to be able to easily switch from my birger mount to my pl mount (or P+S) as needed - which is extremely easy to do if you don't have to worry about the i/cable.

As far as utility - it only works with some late model cooke lenses - not the vast majority of: older lenses, arri lenses, red's new zoom or primes, etc. etc. While it is admirable that is available for the rare few that in the VFX world that need it - I would prefer it as an option AND concentration on getting the communication to Birger or other smart mounts going as EVERY EF lens can supply lens data.

IMS and RED - NOT DUMB!

IMS and RED - NOT DUMB!

I see no reason to be speculating about the reasons RED hasn't certified the IMS, when one doesn't know what's going on behind the scenes.

I personally spoke to Alfred Piffl about the IMS at NAB. I told him I thought the mount was a great idea, and expressed my interest in installing them. This would be a natural evolution of the work I used to do upgrading ARRI 16SR's to Super 16, which involved removing the front casting, lens mount, and replacing them (I made my own PL mounts).

I have been doing business with P+S since 1998 and I can assure you that they are far from dumb. At the same time RED Digital Cinema, also the furthest thing from dumb, are very young company and I believe they feel the need to proceed slowly and concentrate on their core goals before venturing into the uncharted waters of major aftermarket modifications of their product. This is totally understandable.

Many RED ONE cameras will soon be coming out of warranty. These owners can choose to have the IMS installed at that time. I'm sure that once there is a user base of trouble-free installation of IMS, it would be easier for RED to consider their policy toward the IMS modification.

If anyone is interested in an IMS installation after your RED ONE goes out of warranty, please contact me via PM. I am willing to make the investment in the P+S custom tooling for installation of the IMS on RED if there are enough interested owners. When I last spoke to Alfred, the tools were not ready, but perhaps they are now or will be soon.

I would also plan at that time to consider installation of an IMS system on my lens projector and collimator, so I can check any lens that a RED owner might want to use with the IMS.

P.S. I also agree with Mike Hastings that the i/cable, having no function enabled at this point, would best be removed.

Not going to get into the IMS debate, but I will say that we will not be allowing "custom" requests within the upgrade program (for example, please install audio board but not i/pins) :)

Brent, if someone installs the IMS mount it then voids the warranty... OK ... but what about if they wanted to upgrade to EPIC after the warranty expiration, is that still doable or will Red refuse the upgrade because of the mount having been swapped out?

good question.. hey.. red.. any answer?..

As far as I understand it, you have to put your original PL mount back on whenever you send your Red One body in, so I would guess that would be the same for the trade.

The Reason RED won't certify IMS is
(5)(Please insert reason here)

(5) IMS sounds too much like IRS, and nobody likes the IRS
(6) iMS could be a violation of Apple and/or Microsoft trademarks. We don´t want that.
(7) IMS is an abbrivation for "I am sorry", as in "IMS, but cant do"

(1) Most of RED buyers are male, and in their 30s to 50s. RED does not want to scare them. And everybody knows that IMS stands for Irritable Male Syndrome (and I am not even making that one up) http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Irritable+Male+Syndrome
"The Irritable Male Syndrome (IMS) is a recently coined term for a set of symptoms thought to be caused by a drop in testosterone levels in middle-aged men. These symptoms are similar to those of the so-called male menopause (also known as viropause or andropause).

IMS is defined as involving the hormonal, physiological, and chemical changes that occur in all men generally between the ages of 40 and 55, though it can occur as early as 35 or as late as 65. These changes are considered to affect hormonal, physical, psychological, interpersonal, sexual, nutritional, economic, social, ecological, and spiritual aspects of men's health. One of the most consistent symptoms is anger and sullen withdrawal present in men between the ages of 40 and 60.

How about customers' immediate concerns and desperate needs? Can we at least get some official feedback on RED's position?
