Just stubled upon the following article about a new kind of "fan":

The advantages for a RED camera are obvious:
- No moving parts
- Small
- Silent
- Low power
- Low maintenance
:)

That is awesome.

Super technology is sexy.

This Seems To Be The Answer To My Anxiety Regarding An Overheating / Fan Noise Problem With Red. Can Someone At Red Please Acknowledge That They Are On Top Of This Development And Are Checking It Out Right Now. It Would Reassure Many Of Us. Thanks.

Thank you Big L. Attention Red Development Team. I will happily delay delivery of my camera by as much as three months to be a guinea pig (and pay extra) if you can install a beta version of this fan in my red instead of your existing fan. #1566.

first of all, i don't think RED has any of these laying around to install. And secondly, i haven't heard of a Fan/Overheating problem since they addressed it months ago.

Are you using cameras that still overheat?

I'm not using any cameras. Still waiting for my Red. We know you don't have any laying around, but correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding was that the fan can still come on if or when someone shoots long takes, or under very hot conditions, in which case there is noise. It would be nice to know that Red was looking into these devices, since, in addition to eliminating fan noise, they also seem to be two to three times as efficient when it comes to managing air flow. This is not intended as a criticism of Red. I'm just saying, "Why not look into them? You've got nothing to lose. Just add it to your future development team's list of possible future upgrades."

Delay three whole months? Wow, you're so generous.

It's completely unrealistic to expect that they would dive onto some new, untested technology to add into your camera. Maybe (just maybe) for Epic or Scarlett.

Wayne - swap you for #3770? By then they should have the fan well and truly sorted. You can even pay me....

Why not for Epic or Scarlett? Why not even for later Reds, as an upgrade? This thread should be linked to an older thread which discusses this issue: "Fan question: Is there a problem?" There, it seems, yes, the problem was addressed some months ago, Brandon, but I did not really find any good answers in that thread. Consider, good sound guys will disconnect a refrigerator on location because they can hear the hum, and outdoors, crews often stop until an airplane passes. The answer cannot be, well, this is how it works, and we're not going to look into anything new. The answer is, it may take some time, but we will get around to giving this some consideration. For additional clarity, I believe that older thread should be merged here.

Why is this posting in a forum entitled OFF TOPIC? This is still a Red issue, isn't it? How about changing the forum to Fan Noise and incorporating older thread: "Fan question: is there a problem?" I know the Red guys are doing the impossible (so, understandably they have little time to do anything else) but perhaps a current forum focusing on the question might lead to a future examination by the Red crew if or when they have time to catch their breath.

Hello, Mitch. Please send my regards to Jonathan Epner. He has been a great help to me. Thanks.

i whole heartedly agree that they should look into it. If this is really that important to you, maybe your efforts are better served by emailing RED itself about this?
