Why am I not hearing anything else about this show? The cinematography is... WHEW! Gorgeous, like all things shot by Elswit. 35mm by the looks of it, and it doesn't look like Elswit went with the Alexa for the night scenes this time either -- though I could be wrong? Anyone dig up any details on what they're shooting on?

Found this on Variety:

DP Robert Elswit On Shooting The Pilot That Launched “The Night Of”

Robert Elswit hadn’t shot digitally prior to “The Night Of.” The cinematographer’s Oscar winning work on “There Will be Blood”, Oscar nominated cinematography in “Good Night and Good Luck” and many other acclaimed films were shot on film. Noting the pilot episode would require mostly evening shoots, he saw the opportunity an excellent means of learning the ins-and-outs of the Alexa.

[...] Ambient light was important for Elswit’s shooting needs, and was what he worked with primarily on the night locations. Shooting with the Alexa, Elswit was pleased with the camera’s ability to “see more with less light.” Having a strong understanding New York and the city at night, he generally light sparingly with practicals in the foreground to capture the emotional ton Zaillian was striving for.

It's a bit sad that almost all of the really best cinematographers alive today either shoot film or Alexa. It's the sole reason for the dominance of Arri at the Oscars. I understand that it's easier going from film to Alexa, but it would be awesome to see what all these cinematographers would do with a Red. In all honest, there are some truly awful cinematography out there and because Red cameras have been more accessible to everyone it's where Red is dominating sadly.

As for the cinematography in The Night Of, it's truly remarkable. This is among the best I've seen so far in television. As I'm loving the 29-35mm range I really love the wide angle use (I presume it's around that are, looks like it), there's not a lot of close ups which means you really get to see body language in the acting and the environment around them. Masterfully done all of it :)
