  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The new MixPre Series by Sound Devices

I'd say even the MixPre6 / Zoom F4 is a worthy choice to buy over a 744T for most reduser readers.

They are all good.
But personally I'm not so sure. The 744T is an amazing recorder and they are going cheap these days.
Analogue pre-amps, jam-sync, battery life, it does it all...

Also found the big problem with this unit. The knobs on the front are faders that effect the l/r mix, and not the individual channel ISOs. For trim/gain, there's a single control is on the side of the unit. Not exactly ideal. Unless they change this, I'm sticking with my F4.

This is an old post now, but you can change the mode of the recorder to use the front knobs as gain knobs instead of faders if you like.

Does the MixPre3/6 have the ability to name individual tracks? What fine level control does it have over file naming & folder structure? Can notes be added to the metadata both before and after a recording?

Yes, you can do this from the device (via small touch screen) or via the Wingman app, which easily connects to the device via bluetooth. I just downloaded the app, and turned on my MixPre-6 and the app automatically connected to the device.

Has anyone tried to sync timecode via HDMI and also rec triggering? What is the best way to sync timecode with a RED?

Put on Ultrasync ONE on the RED, and the other Ultrasync ONE in your soundie's bag hooked up to the MixPre6 (or get a Zoom F4/F8, and you won't need to even get an extra tc box, just jam with master at the start of day. Simple).

Is what I use myself with my F4 recorder and all sorts of cameras (this vlog was from during a film shoot with a Panasonic Varicam LT):

Hey, can anyone help me work out with this powering solution I am thinking of implementing.

I have a RED Raven powered with Core SWX HyperCore Slim 82wh Red Battery's: https://www.kayellaustralia.com.au/core-hypercore-slim-82wh-battery-p-5671.html
I'll eventually buy some of the heavier ones as well.

Got a MixPre3 on the way.

Cable Techniques & Hawk-Woods have made sleds for these devices that give a DC Hirose 4 pin in for power:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1382308-REG/hawk_woods_sd_1_mixpwr_for_sound_devices.html

Now if I got a Hirose 4 pin to D-Tap/P-Tap, could I run the power of the MixPre3 off the same v-lock battery?

I did start working out the math here..

Raven needs 50Wh maybe
MixPre3 needs 7.5Wh maybe

Batteries I think are listed as 82Wh, so should be in load limit? The particular batteries I have claim a high draw (10A)?

Any thoughts or input would be brilliant fam!

Rather nuts to have a teeny MixPre3 powered by a big heavy V mount battery!! :-o

Or is the MixPre3 attached to the camera rig itself, not in the bag? Then it makes sense, which is I assume what you're doing here.

Wh has nothing to do with load limit. Has to do with the battery life. Thus the terminology: watt hour.

hehehe, yeah was thinking I might have times where I have to manage both and maybe then feed the stereo out to the camera for audio synch if I can't get the flag recording/timecode mischief happening.

I got the recorder yesterday, oh my it is tiny! Which might be more ideal in a bag eventually. Hook up some timecode action like the one you showed us David which looks good. Thanks for that!

Testing today with the 4x AA, they don't take long to get zapped but.

I saw the MixPre3 in person at a trade expo last year, I too was astonished by just how small it is:

But wouldn't get it myself, only three inputs is too few :-/ :-(

Get the NP-F battery sled for it? That is how I'd go, never one to rely upon only AA batteries for a recorder.

Have a go at that bow-tie, what a legend hey!

Yeah I didn't like the dual sled design, however Hawk-Wood have a single sled which might be more ideal.

I was looking at the 633 for a bit (timecode out was kewl), but I am mostly shooting and would rather hire one with an operator for the job.

It already Sounds way better then the h4n hey!
