That Genie is never going back in the bottle in this country! (Wonder how the poor and hungry could relate).

With all due respect Vance, we have Thanksgivings very much like this, and it's back in the bottle for us. I won't go into detail, but it happens without shortchanging our obligation to those less fortunate than we are.

You know, Scrooge can work both ways. It can mean ignoring the needs of the poor, but it can also mean trying to make people feel guilty for enjoying the simple pleasures of life with family and friends.

The poor in America are far better off materially now than they were in the late forties / early fifties when Rockwell depicted that scene. All boats have risen. Whether we all are better off spiritually is another question, but if we are poorer in spirit, I don't think it has anything to do with scenes like this.

Greetings Timothy, I can agree with most of your point of view. And yes, in the forties and early fifties my working single mother could only afford to feed us meat once a week, and it was horse meat because that is all she could aford (and we were greatful and didn't know the difference). I have not forgotten for a minute and give thanks every day for what our family has and the lives we live. This has nothing to do with guilt or attempting to inspire guilt in others. The "genie out the bottle" is all of the electronic devices coming to the Thanksgiving table as depicted. That is probably never going to go away. It is a sign of the times.

Another sign of the times is the widening economic disparity between the "haves and have-nots" in this country since the forties and fifties as compared to now. Back then a single middle class male wage earner could buy a house, buy a car every three or four years, and put his children through college while his wife could stay at home. Today it is different, isn't it? I don't think the poor and hungry experience the "Freedom from Want" too often, and they probably do not go on Reduser.net too often either. You and I are the fortunate ones.

Sad but true. It's sobering to watching 10-year-old kids sitting at a dinner table, not looking up, spending 90% of the time texting. I suspect good conversation might soon be as dead as film.
