  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The negative image area on Epic 645 and 617

What are the image negative sizes on Epic 645 and 617 compared to 35 and 65mm film? With 35mm, I mean the full negative aperture.

4-perf 35mm Full Aperture (Super-35): 24.84mm x 18.67mm

8-perf 35mm Full Aperture (VistaVision): 37.72mm x 24.92mm (still photography dimensions are 36mm x 24mm, called Full-Frame 35mm now)

5-perf 65mm (Super Panavision / Todd-AO): 52.48mm x 23.01mm

15-perf 65mm (IMAX): 70.41mm x 52.63mm

According to Wikipedia:

Just to further elaborate on David's post....

The Epic Monstro 645 sensor is spec'd at 56x42mm

The Epic Monstro 617 sensor is spec'd at 168x56mm (In the original documentation the spec was 186x56mm but I'm guessing that was a typo).
 
Does anyone have a clue which mount these 645 and 617 will be? I think I know which lenses can be used but I want to know which mount?
 
I believe it´s:

645 - Hasselblad
617 - Sinar

Of course, with the interchangeable mounts it will also be possible to put, say, Nikon or PL mounts on them and window the sensor to match the coverage of other lenses...

....but in the Red web page (http://www.red.com/epic_scarlet/) it says PL mount, Nikon or canon. PL mount means that Hasselblad lenses will need to be converted to PL mount :shocked:?
Also be rehoused?
Hasselblad? Mamiya? 617 & 645?
Can we have a clear picture or is it going to vogue till the released date as part of the mystery (that is why is calls Mysterium sensor)?
 
An older page listed those mounts as options. I would not expect a PL-only option for the 645, and definitely not for the 617. I think it´s probably just an accidental omission from the current page.

Hassie lenses will still be a bit of a pain and need mods for cine-style shooting however, such as the addition of focus gears at the very least. They also do not stop down until fired, so some kind of "DoF Preview Lock" will be required. Luckily, the focus throw is pretty long on the ones I have, and they´re awesome lenses...

I believe the original spec sheets said that the 645 Epic would be released with Mamiya 645 mount, and a "medium format" mount, but now the specs don't give those details.

That's a good chart to compare with 35mm FOV, I wasn't aware that the Mamiya 645 had that many lenses for it. I have the Mamiya 55mm, 80mm 2.8 and 150mm 3.5 for 645. They are excellent lenses but breathe very badly and personally I wouldn't use them for dramatic work. There are some other lines of MF lenses that don't breathe so bad I hear. Would be amazing if RED released pro primes for the 645 but I'm sure they would be very very expensive to own.

So what is Jannard planning? A new line of lenses for 645 and 617 which will cost a fortune?

Unfortunately there is no big standard in the medium format as there is in film. All the lenses are expensive and not only because they are better but because the market is just 1000x smaller!
But I always preferred to shoot in medium format than in 35mm (for photo). I used Hasselblad a lot which has a weird but lovely square format 6x6 and also the Pentax 645 which was quite compact yet brilliant to use on travels.
The brilliance of those pics still stuns me today compared to the smaller formats. Maybe that's why I'm disapointed at the results from my Nikon D300. :crying:

But about the mounts: It would be a horrible error to revert to smaller lenses from FF35 or even S35 when using those medium formats. That doesnt make sense at all. There should be a compatible mount ring for all common formats like Pentax, Mamyia, Hasselblad, Rollei, Linhof and Sinar!
 
Actually the lenses for 617 format are relatively simple in construction and therefore could be much more affordable then the current RPPs. I have the Fuji GX617 and even though the lenses were extremely expensive (about $10K per lens), this was due to the exclusivity of the format IMHO. When You look at the lenses - they are really simple...
