  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The miniRED Primes are TINY!!

buttery rings go along way.

The size of these mini lenses threatens my cinematographers mojo !
... only one solution. Get an even bigger mattebox to compensate. Size does matter. :yesnod:

Why? I'm really digging the thought of a mattebox for 2.5" filters...

:sarcasm:

How 'bout a 3x3 mattebox? :ihih:

Yep, that would probably do it. For mobile work, EFP/ENG style, I think screw-on filters would still be best. I didn't realize Chrosziel made a 3x3 mattebox. I guess I've never needed one before.

If you plan to complement the mini-primes with some sort of zoom, a 4x4 mattebox would be better for the larger front elements of the zooms.

So, does anyone know what the diameter of the mini-primes is? I have to wonder if even that 3x3 MB would fit on them.

Do we know the thread size on the miniPrimes? Is there a front thread? If so, it should work.

Albeit, without seeing the lenses, I can't say for certain.

I have a 3x3 sitting on my desk if someone wants to try it out...

Lens size is relative to sensor size

Lens size is relative to sensor size

Hi chaps,
Just thought I'd mention that the size of "glass" is really determined by the sensor, although with large plate photography, they're still using relatively small lenses [but they're SLOWWWW].
I wouldn't be surprised if RED are using modified CCTV Schneider lenses.
As a canon 5d2 user [at present], I've found the quality of lenses makes a huge difference. I own a lot of Leica R glass and Hasselblad Zeiss T's and I find the Hasselblad Zeiss' have a particularly gorgeous look with people in a scene. The Leica's don't seem to have that 3D palpable realism with people, but are exceptional with detail of objects/architecture.

are there any more shots of the mpp set, or was that just a teaser pic?

I am really having a hard time deciding on what to get. Reach is SO important for me, but so is cost. I am (for today) thinking of getting the 2/3 with a nikon mount, 2 good zooms, a fast 50mm, and a 2x extender. giving a range from 17mm to 400mm... Maybe my XHA1 has spoiled me with its really nice 20x lens. I know the crop factor and ppl is a concern, but I may live with it in the hopes of upgrading to Epic ff35 or s35 later (i will probably skip the scarlets that don't have over cranking)

Any thoughts on this?

What I WANT is to get a interchangable, Red Mini PL mount, with a new (not yet discussed) Red zoom, and a 25mm MPP for low low light, but I am not sure if they will have one in time... or at all.

And that line of thought... brings me back to the fixed kit. Only thing I really lose is reach, but in 99% of the scenarios I can MOVE CLOSER.

still hard going from 20x to 8x... and 2/3 HD ENG lenses are expensive and need adapters (for CMOS)... and cinema glass is...

I believe the fixed lens has electronics in it for remote focus, the mini primes are just metal and glass

will red primes work on 16 & S16 film cameras with right mount

I think the mount is a proprietary "RED MINI PL MOUNT" so its new and only on these?

Hi All,

First post here!

Is anyone concerned that the lenses are too tiny and may hinder using certain follow focus models/gear sets? It looks like the focus ring is located rearward on the lens barrel (closer to the mount) while the aperture ring is forward. Doesn't appear to be much clearance from the Scarlet brain body/lens port.
