  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The miniRED Primes are TINY!!

Hi All,

First post here!

Is anyone concerned that the lenses are too tiny and may hinder using certain follow focus models/gear sets? It looks like the focus ring is located rearward on the lens barrel (closer to the mount) while the aperture ring is forward. Doesn't appear to be much clearance from the Scarlet brain body/lens port.

This worry has been expressed in a couple threads and the truth is we won't know until we're allowed to hold a working model with all modules in our hands and see for ourselves. I think RED is pushing for the use of their touch follow focus with their monitors.

RED isn't pushing touch focus on anybody, the only model it'll work on "natively" will be the 8x fixed scarlet(with the coming ff35 RED glass and the electronic Nikon and Canon mounts trailing closely behind). The miniprimes are fully manual cine lens, they are meant to be used with a follow focus. The same with RPP's: they are fully manual cine lens for professional use. There are plenty of options for a follow focus that'll work with the miniprimes for sure, so I wouldn't worry all that much.

Thanks for the responses. Do you know if these lenses may cover the Micro 4/3 format? I definitely want to go the Scarlet route, but currently own the GH-1 with PL-mount.

Jeffrey, don't forget the approx x2.6 crop factor on your Nikon lenses -- which will make even the wide Nikons into moderate telephotos in terms of FOV -- and as Kostas pointed out, it's much easier to make a fast lens to cover a smaller area -- and of course the lens itself can be much smaller. Imagine the size of a front element of a RPP T 1.4 s35mm lens. It would be even larger and heavier than the current to get that extra half a stop or so.

There are reasons why you can have a fast 20x zoom on an Canon A1 that sells for $3,500 that are beyond economy of scale in terms of sales. Principal among them is the fact it only has to cover a tiny 1/3 inch sensor.

No need to worry about the size of the mini-Primes or their quality -- their size is perfectly appropriate to the sensor they have to cover. As to focus throw, bear in mind you have far far more depth of field on a 2/3" sensor at any proportionate FOV than on a s 35 sensor -- and following focus is much easier and less critical.

What did you find out?

Well... if the new mini-primes are, indeed, designed specifically for the 2/3 sensor (RED already has primes that cover S-35 and FF sensor areas), then they would not cover the Micro 4/3 format.

My understanding is that the M-4/3 sensor is similar in size to a S-35mm sensor area.

That would have been my guess given that 4/3 is nominally twice the dimensions of 2/3, and very nearly the height (if not the width) of the Red1 sensor.

A set of primes like the mini primes would be appreciated by a lot of µ4/3 users, but its not really Red's problem to resolve. If Red managed to, on the side, steal a march on Panasonic / Olympus in filling µ4/3 users needs, well that would be a bonus for everyone except Panasonic and Olympus.

Since the sensors are similar in size, you can easily use red pro primes on 4/3 cameras, you just need to get the Hot Rod PL mount for 4/3.

4/3rds:18mm x 13.5mm (22.5mm diagonal) (approx 35mm crop factor=2.0x)
S35: 30mm x 15mm (33.5mm diagonal) (approx 35mm crop factor=1.25x)

Different basic aspect ratios of course.

And the Mini Primes also cover a vastly smaller image area. What's your point?

Just that RPP are relatively larger than necessary for µ4/3 cameras. Really, we are looking at an 11/22/33 series of image circles, so while lenses suited to 2/3 are compact relative to 4/3, RPP's are somewhat oversized. Price is also substantially different.

In the end 4/3 is a competing format, and thus being stuck as a piggy in the middle of Red products is something that is perfectly reasonable.

That lens reminds me of other cameras that the Scarlett reminds me of....
I like to think of it as digiSuper8film.....on steroids...

For those that like the big look you can always add a rubber hood, lol...it won't look so circumsized then...

:blush::shocked:

Is there any way that I could use these lenses on a Super16 film camera? It would rock to use these on a Red 2/3" Scarlet and a film camera, like an Aaton A-Minima... Anybody else hoping for this?

It's not impossible but I wouldn't count on it. They're designed for a 10.1x5.35 sensor while S16 is somewhat bigger at about 12.5x7.5.

Do you have a link to those specs? I'd like to know more about the Mini-Primes.

I hope RED make's them in a PL mount and covers S16. It'd make these lenses very versatile.

Yea.

I've always thought that the miniPL mount is a weird design choice.
Making the mini primes cover only the Scarlet 2/3" sensor is a 50-50 for me.

If it was made with PL mount and covers S16 as well, that'll be great.
But then again, to have the above, the lenses would not have been that small and priced at $950 each.

I believe its real purpose is for compact and lightweight configuration. Lighter 3d rigs, compact underwater housings, crash cams, aerial, etc.
Maybe even for discreet use.
