  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Meizler Module... The Details.

Yep, getting one for sure. Even if I won't use all of the remote operations for every shot, there are too many useful items on it to pass up. This is what I have been waiting for. SOOOOO glad there is an EVF port included. This replaces the need for the +1 module for me.

I have purposefully held off getting a 3rd party power/port solution like the action products Proteus/Electra setup in hopes that Red would come out with a definitive solution. They have!

One question though... It seems that the bottom of the MM replaces the need for a riser plate on the bottom of the Epic... Will there be an option that allows for the cage arms to be screwed into this bottom plate? That would be a nice addition/modification to the design I see here.

Cheers Red team... who wants my money?

This is an amazing accessory. Seriously incredible.

Just so I understand, to get wireless HD-sdi video and wireless audio, we're looking at $19,300? And to get proxy recording we need to purchase mini SSD's? So to get the full functionality of the Meizler module, we're looking at ballpark $22-25k?

Can anyone clarify weather the proxies are wrappers or stand alone editable files? I think the later but would live some clarification...

Standalone files ready to edit.. in whichever one of the 3 codecs you chose in resolutions of 720p, 1080p, or 2K

third codec is...?

We can't disclose that till it is finished going through the certification process... Those are the rules and we need to respect them.

Hey Jarrred, is the front left port on the MM going to be power or EVF? The photo shows an EVF in place, but the details list it as a three-pin Fischer power port...

I'm in... Can I pre-preorder? Can't wait until 9/10...! You have pushed all of my buttons with this, Jarred. 9" monitor, Nikon Titanium ordered already. Now this. Y'all are TOO COOL! I think I will now have my ultimate cinema camera. Until your next release. Oh yeah, Dragon...

Hey Chris, good eye. The EVF port is on the lower right side, the 3 pin Fischer power port will be on the lower left side ( Camera Left ) The connector parts didn't get machined in time for these IBC pre-production units so that connector is missing from the photo ( and at IBC )

awesome.....i hope everyone upgrades their epics fast....want to get some relief from transcoding...:)

This is an awesome module and an amazing piece of engineering. This box does a lot but I doubt it is for everyone. You are looking at over $20,000 for the module and accessories to make it live to its potential assuming you already own the lens motors and controllers . The extra weight also puts it close to an Alexa. Many of the features would be considered a luxury to many budget productions. I want this module but its a tough call. I really do not need lens control on most jobs. All the extra connectors are very nice but not vital. Wireless Video I can live without or could consider the $1,200 paralinx. Wireless Audio is often supplied by the audio technician anyway. Proxy recording is FANTASTIC but for $13,000+ and doubling the weight of the camera ???

I am NOT dissing this module as it is THE module for use on big productions but as an owner/operator the cost is probably prohibitive in my case. I hope Red allows some of these functions in smaller and more economic modules as they now proved the technology. Dare I whisper the name of the Mark Toia Proxy module:drool5:

I am gonna buy a lottery ticket tomorrow

Jared, thanks for your response. You hinted at a smaller module for use with the iPad app in another thread in the future, can you drop any further mini hints?

*Wireless Motor Control – Integrated Wireless communication between 3rd party hand controller and Meizler module. Internal wiring to front outputs for clean cable routing.

wow.

question: which 3rd party controllers?

This is sweet awesomeness... a DP's dream. It's like when I was little and dreaming up houses with direct access to water slides from my room.
This is a true all-in-one. This turns the camera into a form factor of standard cams, but the sweetness is: you can take it off! RED and associates you did an awesome job!

BTW couldn't find the headphone jack and that D-TAP you understandably so much dislike is on the right and not the left... will that change or is that to show that "it's there just don't use it because it's crap" ? hehehe!
And is the fan user changeable as the one for the cam itself?

The more I read the specs for this, the more impressed I am... we all know that the 3rd codec is PRORES, knowing that APPLE are doing there typical ND thing with red... So this is cool. I know that having instant editable files will make this box fly out the door... Im going to buy one just for this reason.

This unit is certainly needed for the a lot of reasons. It's makes the EPIC so much more PRO, especially for the hard core TV / FILM production people.
I'm not convinced I'll use it for the work I do... even though I shoot a lot of big budget TVC's around the world, I doubt I'll need 90% of what this unit can actually deliver. My reason is I want to keep my epic small and light.. so this tacking on such a large hunk of metal will stop me using it. But like I siad, i'll still buy one for the sake of having it... because there will be a time when I will need it.

Regardless of this..., I want to congratulate RED for the effort they have put into creating such and amazing professional tool. Well done guys. Super super impressive.
It was asked for... you delivered. (well not yet... but you will) Brilliant stuff. Congrats to the team involved.
