Allocation! SO #943
Mass allocations! One of the signs of the Apocalypse?

If it is, Apocalypse Now, I say, Apocalypse Now!

SO#932 Allocated.

Imaginary conversation at RED:

"Geez, these Scarlet guys are relentless. Calling and emailing all the time. Just send out a hundred allocation emails to get 'em off our back."

(Happy to be one of those allocated though.)

You think that low?

I figured that a lot of the mid-thousand SO's would be for other stuff...but I imagined that at least 2000 cameras were ordered.

Now I don't know what to expect anymore.

The SO's are in the order that they are placed, and apply to everything ordered from RED.com and not just the camera package.

Think about the number of RED ONES that shipped over the past 5 years and the Scarlet has been shipping for 1.5 - 2 months. If the Number of cameras ordered surpassed 2000, then in about 2 months, the Scarlet X would have had more orders that Red One or Epic M had in about a year.

I would still stick behind what I said about there only being hundreds of Scarlets ordered at this point. Also think about it, how many people actually need a camera of that caliber and can afford it? Although for way it is it's at a great price point and will probably outsell Epic and RED One in the grand scheme of things, the number of units sold will still probably never surpass the low thousands.

So that is defiantly working in our favor because A) we may not wait as long as we thought to get our cameras, and B) the market will not be over saturated to the point where we won't be able to hire them out.

So with that said, hopefully you and I get to rejoice like the rest of these people very soon. :)

We've just had a mass allocation with most of them still in the 900's. The LIST shows a ton in the lower 1000's as well.

I think your estimation on how many cameras are available is off. This is the SCARLET, the CHEAP RED camera that everyone has been clamoring for since 2007 (or earlier).

I don't think it's fair to compare it to the RED ONE and EPIC, as this one is far more affordable and a lot of the people buying it are coming from DSLR backgrounds and wouldn't be able to afford 20+K for a body only.

I would be shocked if there weren't well over a thousand orders.

The original Red One, up until 2009 was very similarly priced to the Scarlet. It could get a similar basic package for about $5K more than the scarlet is now. From what I understand the serial numbers may be random and not sequential for some reason. I could be right I could be wrong about how many are ordered, but theres no way there are too many more than 1000 ordered. There are tons of people out there that are still stuck with DSLRs and can't afford this camera. All I'm saying is that it's not a mass produced product that is going to sell millions in the first few months like an iPhone. And thats a good thing.

SO900 allocated! Everything but the side handle is incoming. Oh my, I will not be able to sleep for the next week!!!

"Defiantly working in our favor..." (lol)

Why would it be so hard to imagine that the early sales would far outpace RED ONE? Don't forget, RED ONE started out as a "scam" with no track record and no infrastructure. Personally, I have little doubt that there are 2000 or more Scarlets ordered but that is just one more speculation.

Not that I don't think it ever will, never said that. But there seems to be a feeling that this is mass produced to the scale of Canon Rebel or something. It's a professional camera that has a base price that is more than some new cars out there. I'm just gathering from knowledge accumulated over years of following RED and the industry, plus a lot of what I read here that theres not going to be millions of these cameras sold in the first year, and most likely ever. It's a fact that with cameras, as they go up in price there number sold/made decreases. Thats all I'm trying to say.

Of course, you could be entirely correct. However, I would contend that 2000 unit sales is a very small number and the built up interest in this camera, worldwide, is rather substantial. Obviously, we'll never know unless RED decides to tell us.
