  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The "LED" light Group Buy

Received mine also Ketch. Very nice light out of these. I have not tested them with the Epic yet but the canon still camera loves them. They will become more useful to me when B,B&S releases their Anton Bauer battery mount. Thanks again for putting this together for us.

Great Geoffrey!

The AB mount has been a bit of an issue with getting their right components together, but they are hard at work so lets hope that is soon coming.

With posts like that, ... you might generate enough interest for a 2nd group buy?

Ha ha., yeah as I said since the beginning, I am very impressed by this LED fixtures and for this the offering, but unfortunately this was a One time deal only... However, never say never, if there was to be a serious demand for it, I could have a serious talk with the guys at B,B&S and since they are great fellows, if all possible it would be done again, but I'll need a serious number of interested buyers before I can even think of proposing this... Of course this entire Group Buy list of participants would need to have received all their units before I could that... ;)

Thank you

Thank you

I just want to say: "Thank you, Ketch!"
You organised a great Group Buy.

A week ago I got my brand new "LED" Light. Everything works fine. I am happy. Maybe I should have ordered two more...

Norbert

While in a way I prefer you guys post your findings and likes of the Area 48 Fixtures you have received, is also Humbling to see that you guys do take the time to e-mail/PM me to thank me for this group buy and to say directly to me how much you like them.

And to all of you I say again ,that it has been my absolute pleasure and hope that all of you will like your units as much as I do, and hope to bring you other group buys, form B,B&S with their planned Area 24 and Area 12 as well as other Group Buys form other great Manufacturers with Gear we al need... ;)

Area 48 buyers. Having a case that works for this size lamp is a challenge. Ive designed a case that I think will work okay. If your faced with the same issue and are interested then contact this fella, and ask that he send you what we came up with as a design. (2) sizes, (a) is a two lamp case with room for accesories plus (2) small-ish stands. And (b) is a single lamp design that would not fit a stand. Both have a foamed area to hold and protect an extra Phospher sheet. The single is priced at 232.00, double is 380.00

this is the sales guy.

While their design is been finalized as to my suggested specs, I applaud your interest in doing this Erich, and the more options for us all the better.

This one here is a soft, half hard shell all cloth, and a hard case Storm like will be also a good idea, but I always suggest the case to be as compact as possible, while providing safer transportation for the gear, and to be divided in two different category needs, one for Transport, were you don't need the extra space for cushioning and doe snot need to be as hard and protective, and the other a shipping case which needs to have all the aforementioned.

An IMPORTANT update on the Soft Carry Bags designs for One and Two Area 48 Soft Units.

I have removed the Bags form this Group Buy as I didn't like the original design, but the guys at B.B&S responded quickly with suggestions made and are now in the process of making the Bags as below drafted, this WILL NOT SHIP together with your Area 48 Soft fixtures, this will be offered when ready, possibly in a month or so, tho all of those that participated in this Group Buy, thanks.

This Bags will be in Black, out of Soft material yet Hard on the edges to protect the Fixtures and they can be stacked on top of one an other with no worries, yet this are not Pelican/Storm like hard shell cases so can't be loaded with ton of gear on top of it, but their design is compact fitted to the fixtures themselves as to reduce size and weigh to the maximum for best travel comfort and protection.

Got to thank you again Ketch, I really love these lights ... my favorite lights by far. They are extremely flexible, and are allowing me to mix sunlight with them to give a very natural feel. The brightness controls along with the softbox extension allows me to match lighting even during magic hours. This entire approach to lighting is speeding up my scene setup times, and I think will save people a lot of money on their films. Here's a couple of shots where I'm using the lights to mix with natural (looks btw good in color ... but these are monochrome shots).

My pleasure Patrick and very happy you too like this lights, and btw those are some great shots love the detail in there!

I am receiving several request for an other Group buy for all of those that didn't made it and some which wished had bough more, so it might happen if I just get enough requests, and the guys at BB&S will be happy to support it since they are now also one of the Corporate Sponsors for my first Film "Rape of a beauty".

Ketch,

I saw one of these lights this past weekend at Alex Buono's Visual Storytelling Tour. The amount of light it threw was pretty astonishing. Another group buy would be awesome.

Great news on your film, count me in on the next group buy. I also would like to upgrade my fresnels (and/or just buy new fresnels with this technology - I currently have a bunch of Altman stuff and don't see a upgrade for that on the BBS site).

Ketch,

The amount is crazy and having it adjustable from 0-100 with the menu adds a ton of flexibility. Also, having it work with high FPS I am finding as a extra bonus ... I mean as far as flexibility I can't imagine much more.

Got mine the other day... Thank you Ketch for hooking this group buy up. This is truly a great light..
I have to say I am impressed with the amount of light you can get from this unit. range from 0-100 and it seems to me that I will probably be using this unit at around 50 to 75 % because 100 would be to fill someone in in full daylight.. I cant wait to see what I can get from it with the V mounts... That will really seal the deal if I can shoot in the field with batts and get some highspeed stuff.
From playing around with my Canon it seems there is no... I repeat NO shutter speed at least on the stills that will have any problem with this light.. So Im feeling safe that Ill be able to shoot over cranked galore with out a problem on the Epic.

Only one drawback I saw and I hesitate to say too much about it, as I really haven't given the lamp a real tire kicking yet. The shadow from the lamp when used say 5 to about 10 feet away from subject I noticed the typical multi LED bulb light shadow around most things but that is pretty close to use a lamp with this kind of out put.. and this was also with very little fill or bounce. Off hand I would say I will probably use this light about 10 plus feet away from most subjects.. I though that with the phosphorous delusion that the shadow would be less noticeable than this. But with the proper setup I would say this lamp is much better than other multi LED light sources. And this set up was just the lamp nothing in front of the lamp to defuse the light...

After just a short test with the Canon 5Dm2 and a 50mm 1.4 it was obvious that the color reproduction on this light is superior to almost everything I have used.. Im looking forward to the DP Choice snapgrid and other deffusion accessories to see what else is possible.

Thank you again Ketch for managing this.

My pleasure guys! And if I continue to receive enough request for an other round at this Group Buy I will do so, no problem, and this time they are ready to take CC from the US partner distributor, all I have to do is authorize a Code and give it a time frame for you guys to order, for those out side the US then will go thru the house manufacturer.

So if seriously interested in Buying the Area 48 Soft LED's, please pledge your serious interest here, and I'll see that it is done, just that this time will need to have a very limited window, so for this I need to have a decent amount of interested buyers and then open it with a Code and then give it a go for no more then few days.

Russ, I have not gotten such issue yet, do to the nice Remote Phosphor panel covering all LED's so nicely vs. other fixtures I used before, yet I understand what you might get, and of course without a Soft Box every LED in the market will give a particular spreaded shadow.

Here's an example of using the Area 48 as the key for an interview, at only 40% about 5 feet away from the subject mixed with the natural lighting. As you can see, the quality of the color rendition and shadow falloff is nearly flawless. I'll definitely be using this light as much as possible and wish I would've had the money for 3 of them. These lights are built like a tank, which makes them a slightly thicker and heavier than I would like, but the tradeoff for durability is worth it.

They are that good. 9/10 stars. Thanks Ketch!

Thanks Andrew for the frame grab.. Looks great.. And like I said my first check out was very crude with just the light and a few table top setups to check a few things.

I don't use a lot of multi LED lights, so it will take a little getting use to it, just like any new tool in the tool box..

Just to be clear, not un happy in the slightest more overwhelmed with all the new possibilities with this light now.. And also wish I had the coin to get a second one..

Just will take some time to learn how to use this new tool like any other new toy/tool...:001_tongue:

My pleasure Andrew, and thanks for sharing such a great shot!

Hey Ketch, I have got addicted to using the snapgrid I received in this group buy. I think these lights really work nice with softgrids, I'd like to get a couple of snapgrids for frost frames ... I am wondering if anyone else is interested in that (DOPchoice might also might be a good sponsor for your movie). What I have been looking at specifically to work with the area48 lights are 4 foot square snapgrids for frost frames.

Very glad you guys are so pleased with the Area 48 Soft LED fixtures, I really am, even so I was certain every one would love them as much as I do, it is always something particularly difficult to please large crowds with any given product, but it seems here we did it a hoe run, and I ma extremely happy about it, and more and more sounds like I will indeed go ahed with a second Group Buy run of this Fixtures, and also looking very much forward to their Area 24 and Area 12... ;)

As for the SnapGrids I absolutely agree Patrick, I have been using them for many years in Still Photography, and they have become an essential tool of the trade.

Don't see anything about the Area 24 or 12 on the B&B web site. Please do tell what they are... Im assuming that they are respectfully 24 and 12 light versions of the 48. Right??
I would be very interested in this as the 48 is great but a 24 or 12 in smaller spaces would be fantastic..
+1 for group buy Area 24 or 12...
