  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The "LED" light Group Buy

Brandon, the AB mount is awaiting a reply form manufacturer to see if it can be done, the V-Lock mount is user replaceable by unscrewing two tool-less bolts, but I hope they'll make it, just not sure at this time.

BTW, for those of you wanting a Anton Bauer Gold mount, as we await final answer on manufacturer for this extra, I am pretty certain (but never used AB's gold mounts) that you could simply remove the V-Lock Battery mount and screw in place a AB Gold mount plate, as far as it comes with the same XLR connector.

Here few pics of the front and back of the Detachable Battery Plate with the V-Lock Battery Plate w/XLR out mounted on, and possibly some one that uses AB's can jump in and see if this can be done.

... some answers to my earlier questions:

3) Is the 'Field' (v-lock) version 85w and the 'Studio' (mains) version 145w? ANSWER. There is only one version, with a bolt on V-Lock. They are both rated at 140w, with 125w driving the LEDs

5) What voltage range does the Field voltage work on? ANSWER : Voltage input is 12-24v.

6) What is the maximum current draw of the Field version? ANSWER : Max current: 9.5 Amps @ 14.8v, 11.7 Amps @ 12 V. If 1 x PAG PL96T was used, Maximum of 8amps -> therefore voltage could drop to 14v then max light output would start at 7100 lumens, and slowly decrease. If two were linked, you should be able to drain them right down to 12V at Full brightness (8500 lumens) for 1 hr 22 mins.

For completeness ... I've asked Cineo Lighting a loaded question about their LS product. Specifically if it Can be driven by V-Locks.
If they used the same density and type of LEDs in use in the HS ... they might need up to 195w (vs 140w for the Area48), but may output up to 11,125 lumens (vs 8500 lm for the Area48).

AJ

EDIT2 : Now expecting the DC option of Cineo Lighting LS to be available in June 2013.
EDIT3 : Cineo Lighting LS's AC power is 167 Watt / 11,588 Lumen output @ 5600K @ 160 deg output / (Guess DC will be lower power)

Thanks Antony,

as I said I am not too technical on some stuff, but just to be clear on the power, I am running the Area 48 Soft LED fixtures with a 90Whour V-Lock Battery.

PS: The boys and girls over at B, B&S are super busy prepping shipping crates for both shows, they already replied to my email inquiry of your questions and told me one of their engineering will be back at me, and as soon as they do I'll post here, thanks for your inputs.

Thats a crazy high number of lumens, I am going to stop by their booth at NAB and try to verify the lumen value (it's kind of weird that the web site doesn't give a lumen range).

Ketch, I am in for one of the 3200k , I do want to get verification on the lumen output though. I am btw really liking their Ledonardo units also (I was thinking of converting some of my arri stuff to led, but going with the ledonardo's seems like a better choice).

Indeed Patrick, they are super bright... ;)

You are down for one, the details of what you want exactly can be discussed directly at time of ordering.

As far as their LEDonardo units they are putting in to the original Fresnel form Desisti, I do like them too, we'll be testing one soon and I'll report.

This light fixture looks interesting. I can tell you that there will be several new Remote Phosphor fixtures (that's the correct technical term) shown at NAB this year. AbelCine will have a new lamp from Cineo (TruColor) and I know of at least three others which will debut at the show.

Ketch,

Apologies if my questions and updates sound a bit technical - if I can convince myself these panels are right for me, the logic may help others join the group buy!

My guess is that you have the Bebop V90RM battery.
+) It can happily supply 9 amps of current.
+) Maximum load is 12 amps.
Your battery can drive the Area48 panels at full brightness until it is empty

What is useful to know is that if someone's battery cannot supply enough current and trips out - they just need to dim the light a bit and switch it back on. This would mean that people can use V-lock batteries with less then 9.5 Amps available.

Those (like myself) with PAG's linkable batteries can choose to run 1 x battery at or beyond its 'nominal' rating of 6.5A (which means the battery isn't stressed), or link 2 x (or more) up and not concern themselves that that the battery is being overdriven.

Ketch, do you have any R3Ds available (full color)? Curious to see the color rendition of these fixtures.

Thanks for sharing this with the community.

A little something on lighting and power. Not all Remote Phosphor lights are 100% flicker free at all camera frame rates. This has to do with how the device is driven and how the dimming system works. I can speak to the Cineo lights as I have tested them but the others are unknown. Connected to this is also power usage. Just because a light is dimmed does not necessarily mean that it is drawing less power. Depending on the design of the circuit it may still draw at 100% power, so a battery that fails to deliver at 100% may also fail at 50%.

Don't make assumptions without information from the manufacturer or testing yourself.

We have a lot of happy clients using the TruColor HS lights. I recently filled a client's studio with them. Anyone can see this light in action in my Hows & Whys of Lighting class (so happens to be Tuesday & Wednesday evenings this week in our Burbank office!) or by watching the video of our AbelCine EXPO: Innovations in Lighting, which is available on YouTube and archived n the Training section of the AbelCine website. I can put a Cineo TruColor HS with 3200 phosphor panels side by side with a traditional tungsten fixture and mix the lighting without fear of color mismatch. That's a treat and opens up lots of possibilities.

Come stop by the AbelCine booth at NAB and see their new fixture.

I'm definitely interested. Thanks for organizing this, Ketch!

I would love an actual graph of the spectrum emitted, please.

CRI doesn't tell the full story because it just measures specific color patches. Eg you can have a light with high CRI but some significant issues in the spectrum.

That would be awesome if they could post their spectrum so that we could compare with the others who have posted theirs.

Sorry. I am the crazy color guy as usual. BTW, spectrum does not have to be perfect at all. The other ones have small spikes too. I just would like to know before buying! Thank you!

Also: aren't those blue/UV LED lights that energize the diffuse panel? I would think that the reason you aren't allowed to use it without the diffuser would be because of sending too much UV at folks, not because it is "too bright", right?

@Mitch,

I understand the Brothers' Area48 Soft looses ~9% power through electrical and cable losses.

I don't know first hand how much additional loss the dimmer introduces. What I understand is that users Are able to reduce then light level through dimming - and for the power draw from battery to be sigificantly reduced, & dim point noted for future use.

I think you make a very good point about not All diming circuits working at all frequencies up to a high frequency. I also note that the Area48 is marketed as as usable in 'high speed video lighting'.
