  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The journey...

I remember buying Oakley grips and stickers for my first BMX back in late '70.

Then in 30 years later, RED totally got me into the real feature film business. Thank you very much.

The grips, also the goggle are by Oakley here, photo from my BMX days back in 1978.

More than 15 years working with film, Sony, Panasonic; but the last two years... I really enjoy.

Red, Thanks for the ride.

Thanks for turning the post production industry on it's head. The workflows we have developed to keep up with the possibilities of the technology have been challenging and interesting, so much so I sometimes feel like a chemist of pixels. The Red One has been a big catalyst for this kind of change, and the raw format is the right way to do this.

While I don't always agree with Red's post production workflow white papers, there are options afforded to those of us in the field to forge our own methods and get the best images out of this camera that are possible. That openness has been awesome. I think as sensors and software catch up, the real benefits will be available to more and more people with less pioneering of workflows, ultimately to the benefit of Red and image makers everywhere.

I hope products like Redcine continue to be developed and expanded along with the new camera systems. Looking forward to more.

It has been a hell of a ride.
We all had problems. We all had our doubts.
But RED always delivered. I always knew that the cam will get better and better. It still does even when Epic and the scarlets are right around the corner.
There has never been a company that made me more happy than RED.
Just go on like that and I will be your customer for the rest of my life.
That probably sums it up perfectly for all of us. Build it and they will come.....

Keep on rocking.

Tim

From de end of 2005 on dvinfo.net until now, it was a rollercoaster..... i work with DI since 2005 and i can see our clients moving to RED Can´t wait for the nem SCAMS..!!!
The Scarlet will for my personal projects!!
Great company for the simple reason that we can chat with you guys, this makes all the diference!!!

I remember anxiously awaiting for news that would come to be known as cameras Epic and Scarlet. When I saw the plan unfold on RED's website, I was completely blown away. The simplicity and complexity of these camera's took me by surprise. I'm a graduate student in a Digital Cinema program which has only been around since 2004. I went to class that evening and in front of the class shared my overflowing excitement and awe about this thing I saw. The overall response was, "RED who?". Mind you, this was a 'Digital Cinema' program,, and not cheap at that. The were using DVX's and the like at the time. Further, in this same class we discussed the future of the program and where they should spend their money. More DV cameras, studio, sound stage etc. No mention of RED of course. Now the irony is this same school totes the RED camera on their website. They have two of them.

Back then I was at a crossroads, spend 50-60k for a degree or invest in myself. I wake up every morning and see this thing in front of me and have to pinch myself. Sometimes I think it's for the best that some don't know what they have just waiting at arms length, what to appreciate.

Coincidentally the school gives the camera to their faculty mainly to operate and more than likely I would have waited in line with the others to do anything but shoot on it. In fact that is the case. I feel much better knowing my money is going somewhere that actually gives back to me.

I could go on and on about my particular situation. I am certain there are many of you with the most interesting stories to tell. Mainly I sit back and read what others are saying here. One thing that I have always wanted to say is that RED is more than a camera to me. It's a vision, it's a breaking away from the pack using common sense and scientific method as a guide with a daring and trusting head... and so much more.

Thanks for making sense and sharing it with all of us.

JB

Jim I've never bought a digital camera still or motion in my life. RED is the first company which has offered the right combination of quality and value to convince me to put film out to pasture.

That's the power of RED. I look forward to my FF35 Scarlet and hope I can indignantly hold onto it as long as I've been shooting with my Canon F1. :D

Good post Jim. Red has changed my life, period. I have a strong suspicion that this process shall continue :-).

I'm willing to bet I'm younger then anyone else on this forum, and even I understand how much RED has not just impacted the film industry, but shaken it at it's core.

It's like aliens showed up with teleportation technology and the automobile manufacturers are trying to make something to rival it.

Good show, Jim.

I am so ready for the (creative) life changing part with Scarlet. So far I'm just a voyeur, but the entertainment value has been high.

Thanks for the vision, for all the hard work, and most of all for sharing as much as you do.

Red has changed my life too.

And the ride continue.

Thanks Jim.

Wow, just doing a little reminiscing here. Two years ago I was sitting in a classroom when a discussion started about Digital Camera's. I remember asking the teacher what he thought of Red. He said potential was huge, but not a sure thing yet. six months later I was thinking of how I was going to jump out and actually do something with my practicum year. I decided I would give Red a shot. by the time i finally got my funds together the wait time had gone from 3 weeks, to 6 months. All because of NAB. 6 months after that i got my camera, and thanks to both the camera and my ability to think in tech ways, It has helped push my career WAY forward. So all i have to say is that my decision to choose R1 as the catapult for my future career is the best choice i have made. Thank you for producing such great opportunities, and also for your generousity in helping us stay current. Thank you

Jim, I like the new av. Very professional and clean!

It's pretty obvious that Jim is just DYING to tell us all the info about how things are progressing, but is sticking to his new policy of not promising any timelines he can't meet. He's showing a lot of restraint!

I agree completely. I'm only 18, but I can definitely see the impact that Red has had on the industry. The business model is so much different than everyone else. Gone are the days where camera companies retain control of their cameras. Gone are the days where the big-wig studios dominate the film world. I'm so excited for the opportunities that Red has opened for independent filmmakers. With the incredible things that are available right now, it'll be amazing to see what Red will be doing when I get out of college! Thanks, Jim and the Red team, for all the hard work, sweat, and blood.

Why does it seem that the only appropriate response to a thread entitled "The Journey" is... Don't Stop Believing!
