  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Really interesting featurette delving into cinematography and technical choices when shooting The Irishman.


New opus magnum from Marty Scorsese lasts whooping 3,5 hours and is shot mostly on film. They went digital only for the scenes with deageing vfx. The interesting tidbit is about camera choice for the digital. They created custom 3 piece camera rigs consisting of one Helium and 2 Alexa Minis. Really interesting combo. The more I read about this movie the more I want to see it, not considering the fact it is directed by my favorite director. Really glad that Netflix funded this project and we can enjoy this type of movie even in 2019.
 
We sat at Camerimage with Rodrigo Prieto, it was great talk and it will be available on their youtube shortly.

He talked in depth regarding everything camera wise...
 
Does anyone know what the thinking is behind using a different camera for the VFX? I can understand more resolution for VFX but that's not what they've done here. Why not use 3 Heliums or 3 Alexa minis?

Yeah I’m with you. What does he mean by “witness” cameras?

Since they are doing heavy VFX for the faces it's better to have different angles to see if everything is ok with the shot (sometimes seeing thru different angles helps to find problems and fix them easier). Usually the center one is the main camera used in the final shot so the other ones don't need to match or anything since are only being used for reference...
 
I thought is was about an hour too long, especially towards the end. I did enjoy seeing the Latin Casino, as I grew up close to that place as a kid and rarely got to see some of the big name entertainment on the marquis, and it was right across the street from the racetrack - so a perfect place for mob type activity. It just didn't suck me in like "The Godfather" but for Netflix was a treat.

I would say 2/3 of the film used de-aging VFX, from what I remember of it after seeing it a week ago.

Yeah IMDb should never be trusted for that. A recent example:

"PSA for film tech nerds: for those who have been mentioning the IMDb tech specs page for #KnivesOut, it has several flat-out errors and some other stuff that’s true but presented in a misleading way. I wrote in to correct it but, after a period, it reverted to incorrect info." -Steve Yedlin

I can second that since I handled all of the footage on Knives Out. :-)
