  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The industry has finally engaged...

Jim, You got frustrated when it didn't seem that the big guys "got" your 4K idea. Now it seems that 4K is going to be accepted.... You set about creating a new price point for professional digital cinema cameras. Arri listened and reacted and now Sony has.

You may be the underdog but you make big Fiji waves.....

If it's a 4K 72fps EPIC-S for $10k then you'll see some crossover for sure between EPIC / Scarlet "Markets."

If its 4K 72fps for 10K then you'll see more than crossover. you'll see cross owners. esp as scarlet will have HDRX? Unless you 'forget everything we've said for the last 3 years'
that package would be a little too close to what people are putting $40k down for today and have been in a queue for for months no?

Sounds like EPIC... lower your expectations. Really. Not close. This is what bugs me. And you get something like this from where?

As an Epic-M and Epic-X owner I'm not worried.

There is room in the ecosystem, Look how many 5D2's there are and they just keep selling more. My wish is for RED to be inundated with 10,000 unit a month orders.

My clients like to work with me for me not my gear. The gear is a bonus.

I could have gone to the Canon event, accept for the fact that I have no desire to.

My whole present and future is planned around Red products.

Nov. 3rd! Let's Go!

I think a lot of us are just totally spun around and have absolutely no idea what to expect, hence the wild speculation. I really can't wait for Thursday. Feels good to be able to say that, because that means the announcement is this week.

If I wanted to speculate... why not 9K at 200fps for $2K? Easy, right?

Everyone needs to get real here... or Nov. 3rd will not be fun. And it should be.

Jim

Now the other guys are finally stepping up to the plate, giving an 'industry wide' seal of approval to 4K ( probably much to their own annoyance), I could see an interesting use for all those R1 bodies you'll be getting back on the stage 3 program...
Some seriously cut price educational discounts - or hell, maybe even nice tax reducing 'donations', of bodies to every accredited film school under the sun. The whole next generation of film students graduating with a full knowledge of Red workflows.
"Psst...Hey man, try a little intravenous 4k...You'll love it, first hit's for free."

That is pretty bloody brilliant.

So if todays rumors about the Canon camera is corret, Scarlet will have hard time competing with it:

  • Price: sub $15,000 – possible down to $10,000
  • Image quality: Alexa good
  • SDI outs
  • XLRs (audio)
  • Piviting & detachable monitors and grips
  • PL mount and EF mount options
  • Resolution – 4k capture, 2k recording

I've got my money ready for EPIC stage 4. That's what I want.

Scarlet will be great and there won't be anything else in the market that can touch it. But it won't come close to the EPIC specs. I used to dream of a Scarlet, but over these last 3 years I've worked hard to build up the cash for an EPIC. It's the ultimate camera with the most amount of adaptability. Not everyone can afford one granted.

So stoked to see if a scarlet can intercut and be my BTS camera or even a 'b' camera in production.

Bring on Nov 3!!!

I think the speculation is part of a best or worst case analysis and stress reliever for everyone who has been waiting for Scarlet for a decent while now.

I honestly think no one is betting the farm on a specific config or price and there have def been some insane concepts about what it could be but they are all drawing on basic truths that were published and/or changed/retracted over that decent while people have been waiting. No malice on anyone's side but pure electricity based on you delivering a product they want.

I'd say overall having a user and future user base that interested and excited about a new product is a win for you no matter how you slice it. press is press and I say you revel in it and enjoy it.

I'll be at RSH thursday ready to see what happens.

I wish it was the 3rd already! What is taking so long?

Jim

Amusing that you are chomping at a bit right alongside everyone else....you have the power to release yourself and us from these torments, you know. It would be so easy!:devil::devil:

(not often we get to serve Jim up a dose of the devil's own medicine...)

We'll see... won't we? Thursday.
