  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Hobbit...

Can anyone comment on whether this will be getting either a 2 or 4K DI?

I'd suspect 2K, given the amount of extra information that's inherent with 48fps, and of course the cost VFX, but still, I'm curious.

Jackson noted in some interview, he wanted to shoot LOTR in 65mil, but couldn't convince the studio back then and how with the Reds he finally did it, just with digital tech. Michael Cioni also mentioned once, that PJ and his team went for 4K workflow (I'd be so happy if the film is finished in 4K, this is very much needed for large screens esp. IMAX). Although it might not be the case and that would be a great deal of shame IMO. I say go full 4K and take no prisoners.

I saw the new trailer (2D) in the theatre near me ahead of Skyfall, they only use 4k Sony projectors, though I doubt the trailer was at this res.

Looked absolutely jaw-dropping, whatever they were screening it at.

Shot on 2 year old Epic technology... heh heh heh People with Epics are worried why? "Uh, Ive got the same camera that shot the Hobbit" - case closed. good day sirs!

to Sony Arri Canon...

Love that clip! True too.

Others are announcing that they're catching up to where Red were 2 or more years ago with actual product, and yet there's panic. Even though we own bleeding edge tech with an upgrade path...

Surprised we haven't seen this little gem discussed:

What would be the best way to experience this film? 3d IMAX or ultra avx? Would IMAX be projecting at 5k 48fps? or are they taking the hd/2k file and going 24fps and just going a up convert remaster from the hd 24p file? Do all the digital projectors doing 2k in theatres have the ability to project more than 24fps and is the dcp file they get from the studio come in different formats based on the screen? Sorry noob question.

They are keeping that information to themselves but the best way to see it would probably be IMAX if you can get to a good IMAX setup that is showing it in 3D @ 48FPS.

If it's finished in full 5K, then they can take advantage of the resolution for IMAX DMR blowup (70/15 24fps film), I'm not sure they're doing 3D that way with two film projectors these days, possibly. Personally I'd go for a big screen and digital 4K projection, also it makes sense for them to post the list of theaters with HFR/48fps 3D option available on the official site.

Regal Cinema's will have 48 fps in almost all their cinema's ... ( http://www.48fpsmovies.com/ ).

It is interesting that a lot more theaters will be cutting over to 48 fps 3D rather then 4k. I'd kind of prefer watching it in 4k at 24 fps, i guess that will be great for Jackson on mult-channel distribution though(i.e. there will be a ton of options to view/buy the movie, and with each option means another sales opportunity).

I wounder how many RED users shoot at 48 fps ? (me personally, i'd prefer they shoot at 96 fps @ 360, that way they'ed have a totally clean 24 fps @ 180 shutter, as well as a 48 fps @ 180).

Hmm, yeah I think I will go IMAX 3d. I just hope IMAX doesn't take an HD dcp project and stretch it out. Honesty I would think watching it in anything other than 4k 3d at 48fps would be like taking a 2k project and watching it on Vimeo at 720p. :(
