The announced Epic/Scarlet H.264 module a great product for ENG shooters?

With a truly decent camera shoot and send (stream/email etc) material/items from the field at 1080 with a 3K(Scarlet) to 5K(Epic) image on file for later use/incorporation/sales!

With this announcement it seems to me that ENG stringing just got a whole lot better.

Any thoughts?

It is a good start but unfortunetely most editors would prefer prores or avid mxf files to edit with. So in most cases you would still have to convert to something else which kind of negates its usefulness for editing. The main two Nle's avid and fcp are not optimized to work with h.264 so performance is a little slow in fcp and you would have to spend time importing the quicktimes to use in avid. Possibly with more time Red will use this module to also produce prores or and dnxhd.

Hi Sanjin,

Interesting product, and great price. Have you had a chance to try one out ?

How could this be powered on camera ? How good is the signal if say the transmitter is on a steadicam, inside an appartment ?

On a side note, how does the AJA KiPro deal with file names, start and stop record and does it have record any metadata over HD-SDI or HDMI ? This is in my opinion a great advantage of Red's H.264 onboard module, you will have files that really match the .r3d files, making the off-line to on-line really stright forward.

Cheers,
Damien

Hi Damien,

I still didn't make a final decision to purchase either Gefen Wireless HDMI Extender or AJA KiPro.

But now I'm in a stage just thinking and considering about it.

At the moment there are many reasons for that sort of "delay" caused first with the shipping

slowdown thanks to the volcanic ash from Iceland and second is a need of more real end user info about both products.

Gefen Wireless HDMI Extender could be possible to power from battery using "reconfigured"

Switronix Ptap to AJA 5v Cable.

Also it probably needs a kind of "Clipfinder" third party software solution to work with the AJA KiPro file names

and custom made hardware/cable solution for the button that can simultaneously start/stop recording on R1 and KiPro.

I have a good feeling that all is possible.

One needs to edit the material first, and h.264 is a delivery codec. You don't want to edit h.264 if you don't have to. Both cameras should support in-camera scaling to 1080p.

You could also mount a Nanoflash right on the Steadicam
