For newcomers to RED you really need to tip your appreciation cap to RED for the RCX software that handles the R3D data captured on the RED camera.

To the REDCINE-X team. Thank you for rapidly evolving this software tool and making it so versatile and stable.

Gone are the days of REDrushes, REDalert, Assimilates version of Redcine, Clipfinder, monkey extract, storm, compressor, etc. anyway. You get the point.

RED post has matured due to this great tool.

Although simultaneously I'm also very thankful that RED also worked hard to get R3D reading integrated into other software!

RCX Pro is great for understanding how R3D works and how to get the most of it - and should be the first stop for any RED user.

I wish we'd had it when we started in 2007. Good heavens, I remember when there wasn't even RedCine! Just Red Alert and QT references! That Ringo Starr music video we just did from the QT reference files transcoded at decent quality to ProRes, haha! And of course the ProRes gamma hell between FCP and AE that ensured... Things certainly have gotten better.

I am a bit confused though: why do people use RCX Pro when they could use the free version of DaVinci Resolve, which is very fast and has secondaries, power windows, etc?

I have the paid version of resolve but when you want to get an Epic footage edit going quickly with camera audio, even if only reference tracks, RCX is the best way to go right now. Then final grade in Resolve.

@ Bruce,

You are bringing me back to the days of creating dailies with Apple Compressor. Sheesh! If folks only knew. AVID dallies for Meridian CODEC from RED in the early days. Talk about solving workflow issues.

I think RCX is a great onset tool. There are some features I would like to see added but right now it rocks.

David

David, I totally agree. RCX is as important as the cameras, excellent execution. It would be amazing if we could add plugins. It would make RED stronger as we would develop solutions that enriches RCX and are not obliged to use stand alone solutions.

RCX is great, but ONLY if the timeline is strictly red material.
Personally, I can't afford to juggle different software, depending on the material in the project.
That is why RCX is fine for red dailies, quick reviewing, sorting and cutting R3D down.
For actual grading nothing beats the value and power of Resolve, free or paid.
Beside, I'd like to remind, that RCX, no matter how good, by any measure, is not a grading software... Well, at least, not in it's present form...

Look at the potential of a software, not at the actual version. RCX has enormous potential because it goes "hand in hand" with the HW and it can evolve much more than a generalist SW. I imagine RCX in 2 years from now, a full editing and grading SW suite, GPU accelerated with hundreds of plugins.

FWIW,

I see it as a very efficient one-light, dallies, render media tool.

I was just noticing today how far RED software has come and how they have moved it all into one really nice piece of pretty stable software that does all of those things well.

It really makes the RED workflow from set a LOT more effective.

David,

RCX-Pro is really the best starter to work with R3D but DaVinci Resolve is the best grading software on the planet that natively (what's possible to get out of SDK) supporting R3D.
