The Good Enough Revolution

Working in advertising in New York I see red shoots for the web all the time

Makes sense if you are RED camera equipped already. If you have the system, use it to the max. My point is that you do not buy a RED camera to shoot for web only. That does not make sense to me. But then again, here is not New York. We are not waist deep in dollars.

It makes sense because it's almost impossible to remove aliasing from an image if the sampling is bad to start with. This is one reason why we render things out at 2k even if we're delivering a web banner. For instance it's almost impossible to kill a moire pattern once it's been introduced.

The skew from a 7D is readily apparent regardless of resolution

The color and dynamic range of red is apparent even after Youtube compression.

From the wee knowledge I've accrued in my lifetime, it's seems like 'practicality' is the defining victorious force for many human endeavours and technologies. And practicality is always the ugliest option.

I couldn't agree more. This is why the average household was replacing their 35mm still camera with 640x480 resolution VGA digital cameras when they first came out. Even the most agressive digital junkie wouldn't make a case that VGA res. is comparable.

What are you talking about?

Who was replacing 35mm film with 640 crap? I've never met such a person.

I said "Average household" not "tech junkie. Are you kidding? People bought VGA digital cameras up like pizza because "wow, i dont have to go to the one hour photo place now!" Where were you man?

Kind of a depressing article. It's a strange lesson that practicality beats beauty everytime. I don't like that.

Very accurate article with good points. Doesn't mean the RED is an albatross, or a Canon is the next true savior, but on the front lines of the digital revolution, both are useful. There are many tools used to "fight" with, and one is not "better" than the other, just more practical for a given purpose. Methinks there is a bit of "us" and "them" mentality in the discussion. Those of us who ponied up for an R1 are set apart as revered and/or reviled from the ones who have not. That has created a marketing opportunity for Canon, Nikon and others to create a device that will shoot "just as good as an R1", or so the sales pitch goes. Then they sit back and let the marketplace duke it out, which helps them sell more accessories and accoutrements. This makes some of the R1 owners feel a bit like the ARRI owners, or the Panavision owners. Oh, wait, that's right, you can't buy a Panavision. Everyone loves to knock down the guy on top. What I find amusing are some of gadgets folks are already hooking up to a DSLR to make it operate more like a film camera.

Point is this, there is always a bigger fish, or smaller fish and we cannot stop ourselves from discussing which is better, from whatever our point of view might be. They're all tools folks, pick one and be happy with your choice. It's good for what YOU need it to be. Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. And technology will never cease to change.

But this is about human nature. If you find that depressing you are out of luck cause we ain't changing. And remember that this is consumers, not mass media pros.

He he he... you might be using those same types of gadgets with a 6k RAW cinema camera very soon. Remember the Slumdog Millionaire hand held rigs?

Exactly. There is NO free lunch.

While the technology itself may be good enough, the images produced with said technology should never simply be just 'good enough" They should be the best possible.

If one is shooting to build a library of stock footage, it is certainly better if the originals are in the highest possible quality format that can be scaled and used for any release format.

I agree with you Roberto. I guess what I meant by finding it depressing is that, right now in our industry, it's very chic to produce content to be viewed on a device like an ipod or a cellphone. David Lynch said it best...(Goes with the whole "good enough" theme)
