  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The future...

ois

ois

Amidst all the great options and developments coming, I sure hope that you will be able to implement a good ois in the fixed scarlet and her successors. For docu and run and gun it is a bit sad to lose resolution to stabilisation in post.

Never done. We are just getting started. We now have a library of knowledge that we can build from. Trust me... the stuff in front of us is hard to imagine.

Jim

Good.

It is hard for us to explain without giving away the fort to our competitors... as we have done in the past. But I can tell you... you haven't seen anything yet.

At some point... people will realize exactly who is delivering the future. And in a way that doesn't screw the customers...

Jim

Cool.

EPIC-X is on track. End of this month.

The problem we have is so many opportunities going forward. It is really interesting. Exponential leaps.

Jim

Great news. And that's only about 16 days!!!

That is easy... already done. Epic.

Jim

Call me crazy, but 18K vs. 4.4K... not really what I call "competitive". Now Anamorphic 35 it's competitive with.... It's made Super 35mm a thing of the past. Haha.

Looking to the distant future is always fun, but never more so than when you're shaping it.

I'd like to think that there's some kind of global-latitude sensor possible, where you choose aperture only to affect depth of field and the sensor records light levels way above and below what the eye can see, leaving the creative decision of how to expose for the edit suite. RAW to the next level. It's possible to far exceed human capabilities with sensors for heat, sound, pressure etc, so why not light? ;)

Omron had a 27 stop latitude low light sensitive car security camera years ago, that kept color constancy (balance across the latitude range) that has gone dark kn recent years. I think it was a small cmos chip, but can't remember now. There is also lightfeild technology. The other 120 db snr sensor stuff did not pan out, though going by some of the security camera shoots from London today I wonder how high of a signal to noise ratio they are achieving. There is also the possibility of nearly 100% fill factor combined with one of the 3 color technologies.

Sounds like RED is well on the way to inventing the "Holodeck" about three centuries early!

Whatever they're working on, I can hardly wait to see it.

If you are meaning 3D softlight instead, then it had been demonstrated locally years ago. If you want to film volumetrically, I have an idea for around 8 years. If you want hardlight 3D, ask in a few years time. The future does not only belong to Red, there are other inventors out there.

Sounds exciting....Would it be possible in the future to "shrink" the cameras in size? A 4K cam the size of a matchbox would be awesome, not asking for too much am I :)

I did have some design ideas for that, a flip pack too :)

I'm writing from Munchen this morning.

Also I was writing about my vision of the Red future already many times before

and would like to say now again that if Red meets some of those requests then the future is really bright.

Here in Bayern you can always get a right feeling from the pulse nice, warmhearted, temperament

and smart local German people but also never forget that the competition never sleeps.

Sanjin... what the hell are you talking about?

Jim

I was thinking the same thing.

Simple, it is just a different foreign way of thinking, and not cryptic, maybe aspie like. We have a guy on another forum, that posts in such a cryptic style that you have to spend minutes deciphering even simpler posts, and he is American.

He is writing from Munich, talking about his ideas for Red mentioned before elsewhere, and how they would make Red's future good. How smart, clean cut and emotionally and intellectually nice (relevant supportive) people there are there (obviously compared to others ;) ). Then warning that the competition never rests, to match you, and not on their achievements. The only question is, does Sanjin, know something we don't :) .

LOL, leave it to Sanjin to get Jim a little riled up. Sanjin, when are you coming to California??? You would fit right in! LOL.

I don't know if it's me, but when I click on Jim's profile and see a bunch of new posts, I get goosebumps.

Jim, you are someone who NEVER says or does anything without good reason.

If you are saying we ain't seen nothing yet, I'm sure you mean it. And that's freaking UNREAL.

Can't wait to see what's up your guys' sleeve :)

I consider myself a pretty hardcore PC Mod Enthusiast and one thing that annoys the crap out of me is the constant "stepping" in the CPU market. ( not to mention Ram, HDs, Graphic Cards etc) You would only just land the latest 2.5 GHZ CPU when wouldn't you know it, a month later they released the 2.6, then the 2.8 then the yadda yadda yadda. What I have always wondered is why don't they just shoot for the moon? why doesn't someone just say ..."hey you guys why don't we just make 4Ghz unit?" 8 cores on single die for the pro-sumer? why not? is to crazy to think outside the box? Will convention always drive the development of products in the PC industry? I have sometimes laid in bed at night and dreamed about the products I would like to develop for the PC, I have even tried to get money for development and been laughed at all the way out the door. For god-sake this is the age of nano technology!!! Would I pay $2500 dollars on a single processor that would future proof me for the next 5 years? Hell yeah.

Will people still be shooting Epic Cameras in 5 years? yes they will. I am not sure where this technology will go in the future or for that matter what Jim and his team will come up with within that time. BUT I can rest assured that the EPIC I buy today will still be viable in 5 years. I love that. The courage to say to hell with it!

This is the reason why this company not only excites me, but inspires and encourages me on a daily basis. Jim and his team fly in the face of convention. The courage to say " Lets build a dream camera and change the future of the industry?" 2K? what the hell lets shoot for say ...oh I don't know 5K? oh and while we are busy why don't we squeeze it into a tuna can?"

I don't own a RED, I inspire to, but I know it will be a good long while before that happens, however, I am excited to be a member of REDUSER. I look forward to posts like this from Jim, it helps me dream, it reminds me that anything is possible if you continue to be inspired. Jim and his team are my inspiration. I would love to get my hands on their technology and one day i will, but the real gift they have given me is the courage to keep dreaming. I look forward to future announcements with baited breath :)

Don't get me wrong... I like Sanjin. I just don't understand what he is saying half the time. :-)

Jim

Why do I get a feeling that EPIC-Xs are going to ship with something extra special that EPIC-Ms won't have... Hmmmmm...

LOL, leave it to Sanjin to get Jim a little riled up. Sanjin, when are you coming to California??? You would fit right in! LOL.

Anthony, I'm coming in California as soon as I can, believe me,...

Wayne,

believe me I do not know anything more about RED/Epic future than you.

Jim,

sorry for a bit of derailing this thread in a discussion forum off topic and also tanks for liking my opinion.

And of course that I can't speak about the future of RED/Epic and all in that way…but has a small wish that one day can be possible to swap the smallest FF35mm on Epic (that means the fastest FF35mm lens ever made like a Noctilux-M f/0.95,…).

Also must say that from the beginning on I'm not so impressed with taking additional X-track exposure in HDRx with a shutter speed (it's a wonderful old photography way to get more exposure)

just because I think that we are deeply in digital age where a super clean high ISO getting remarkable results and gaining popularity especially for available light shooting

(Why not take this feature to get one or two stops of DR with HDR blending A/X tracks without jumping in a motion and flicker hole of artifacts?)

But that's what I think EPIC like best digital still and motion camera future could be, but who am I (?), I'm just an ordinary REDUser, that's all…

I don't know if anyone feels the same sentiment as me. Of course, I am excited to see what Red is cooking up next.

However, I'm going to get my Epic-M in the next few weeks and talk of this amazing new vague advancement (Dragon?) makes me feel like my Epic is already outdated, even before I receive it?

Oh brother....

Story of my life.... and yes, I still have a minidisc player.... :)
