  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Future of Follow Focus Now- Optitron by OptiTek

I've sent an email and two PM's over the past week requesting information and received no response. Does the Optitron really exist? :)

Jacek, I've been waiting several months, and I've received the Epic mount, and the wireless unit is supposed to land at Abel tomorrow, but these things are completely useless without the hand unit, which has NO ETA.
My sales guy at Abel NYC said they'd be willing to put one of your units on the show floor, why not do that? I'm starting to wonder the same as Steve!

Yeah. His website seems to be stuck in the stone age. Nothing irks me more than when people make announcements on a website like "NEW WEBSITE UNDER DEVELOPMENT - PLEASE CHECK BACK SOON TO DISCOVER NEW OPTITEK PRODUCTS FOR 2012" when we are at the end of 2013. This is the number one reason I would be weary to order a product on a website like this. I've been checking that website every few months to see if it has been updated with new information but it has been exactly the same every time.

Please add me to your list...& congratulations!

Apologies if asked or answered but can you tell us anything about the upcoming wireless?

thank you!

Sorry guys we are buried in orders for another very popular product. Had to pull all our resources to keep up.
We are a small outfit and going through major growing pains now. The OptiTrons that were supposed to be build two months ago after our initial run sold out are built now. I am also having second thoughts about the market readiness for this technology. There is a lot of resistance and negativity against non "CINE" optics. I try my best to present the advantages but guys vested in cine glass for $$$$$ got to get their ROI. Understandable. None the less holding back progress. A bit discouraging. The web site will go up when the market is ready for the tech.
I also would like to take the opportunity to apologize for the delays with our customers. They are the blood in our veins. These are great times to harness technology...
Thank You Very Much!!!!!

We've had wireless since late July shipping

Spot on Björn...

I'm very curious to see if this unit will eventually allow manually control & calibration of iris, zoom & focus to. "Train" Optotron to counter breathing & para focal issues.

Still lenses are simply not paradisal, but in theory, this unit could counter these problems if controller can remember & interpolate the data.

Very interesting...

Just want to point out that Jacek system has a very valid point for costing that little extra. A FF system that touch the lens in a physical way is no god for still glass. When putting on gear rings etc. you will find that most still glass is not enough solid in their build not to affect the image when the FF gear is pushing on the side of the lens.... This system does not do that so even low build quality still glass will focus more "straight".

If they got the zoom to counter work the focus breathing, then this system and a good set of EF glas would outpreform most expansive cine glass by far.

just saying.

Of course it would have to control zoom externally to accomplish this...still, would be an amazing feature...

OptiTron can do all these things if we needed it to. However there are some aspects that are easier and more effectively dealt with in the lens itself. The key is to know what is more practical to do. With my 25+ years of experience with camera lenses I have a pretty good idea what to do ...

I think having more videos, demos and information on the optitron would be very beneficial. People are always resistant to new products but having more information to them can change their minds. Like many on this board have said, you really need more info available. Marketing is a necessary evil. I am not telling you how to run your company by all means, I think you have a terrific product and it would be a shame to let it go or put it on hold. (I am sending you a private message)

Hopefully, I'll take delivery of the handunit (I already have the mount) in the next couple weeks. Will post a video and full-write up when it comes in. Available for rent shortly thereafter.

I think a large portion of the market is ready for this kind of product. I for one would be very interested in it if it were readily available

Jacek, I've been meaning to ask you this. I really love the capabilities of the Optitron, but also want the ND and global shutter of RED's motion mount.
I guess you know the next logical question.
Is there any way you and RED could join forces to get a motion mount / Optitron like device going.
I know it's probably too good to be true, but this would be a dream for me. What are the chances?

NICE WORK

I'm with you on that, Motion Mount vs Optitron is really hard to decide, i want both features at the same time! ;)
The thing is, RED has already the needed functionality to make a EFF possible. You can map two functions called "focus near" and "focus far" on buttons and wheels. Try the zoom rocker or wheels on the side-handle, it works nicely and in combination with a REDMOTE can be helpful.

But there are two problems, the steps are too big to make smooth focus-pulling possible and there is no perfect controller for that. The buttons and wheels on the sidehandle don't do the trick here. For smoothness i have hope, look at the rack-focus feature (now with variable speed), it demonstrates that the hardware is ready for smaller steps.

So in the end there is only one thing missing, a piece that has been planned from the very beginning but never really surfaced.

It's called the REDMOTE PRO! ;)

Did the optiitron go live yet?

Hi Jacek,

I was wondering if you could tell me the range on the Optitron wireless please? I'd like to use it for a cable cam but don't know if it will work that far?

Thanks, Richard

Hi Jacek. Are there any new updates to the Optitron? You mentioned working on new ideas for the system, would be interested to hear more.
I should be ordering one around the end of Feb, what's the back order situation like?
Could do with a time frame from order to delivery.

Best.
