Hi Redusers

This is my first post and therefore bound to be an ignorant one. I have been following very very closely on all the activity on these forums and any other source on the net that provides me with even a drop of RED info.

my question is, however, going to be an annoying and lazy one.

I would like to know if someone could please explain to me (as vaguely as you like) how my system would function from shooting to exporting a final cut.

I've tried to read everything available but i can't quite see if i have the necessary hardware to do it all at the office. It seems to be the case but i am a huge sceptic.

My Kit: (inc. the RED cam in the mail)

1. RED ONE
2. Mac Pro: Quad Core, Dual 3GHz proc. 8GB memory, 4 x NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT cards... think thats all the info needed

I realize this will seem like an annoying ridiculous question but I'm really struggling to believe it can all be that easy: shoot, import, edit offline 2k, export??

pathetic and grateful

The problem with your question, is that there are a multitude of answers dependant on your needs...

You generally have 3 routes

1. Quick and dirty
Work directly off the proxies from start to finnish
(Quicker than P2. Better , too IMHO)

2. A bit more "pro"
Cut off the proxies, quickgrade in RC/RA with Crimson as the glue between the apps

3. Pro
Like 2, but You'll only be using RC/RL for initial development of the files and then send the grade to something else (like color)

Each of these solutions have different advantages and drawbacks and can also be done in a multitude of ways.. so there isn't really a quick way to answer.

Please, don't bother with Option 1. The proxies are for cutting only, not for output. Get Crimson and get the most out of RAW using Redcine.

And get Gluetools. Even if you finish in 1080P, please use the DPXs to Color. Anything else is a waste of Red.

Actually... I totally agree. But not everyone will have the throughput for that... And it's a point to show that you can use RED with real quick turnover as well...

firstly thanks for your help guys.

secondly can i just clarify: if i do indeed want to perform all my colour timings/correction/effects in Color, i need to get Crimson and glue tools? and being a moron where would you suggest is the place place to learn about these programs

thanks again
Gille
