Hi there,
Sorry if it has been asked before and forgive me but... Why does the FIXED SCARLET'S lense only has one ring ?
I know the ring is multi-fonctionnal and you can set any function you want on it but why ?
Wouldn't it be possible to have a lense like this :
red-body-20090928-600.jpg

And this one has only two ring... But if it's a matter of size, I think it would be cool to have the same presentation with one ring dedicated to aperture and thos other for zoom/focus switchable. Or better : one ring for focus, on for zoom and the aperture set by a weel like on DSLRS or something.

I know it's a dumb question but I'd like to know why.
Anyway, I still think the camera will be awesome, I'm just wondering.

hey!
i think it was due to manufacturing costs, red has/wants to keep prices accessible. somebody correct if im wrong.

Well, that photo is basically of a manual lens, and the fixed-lens Scarlet is using an electronic zoom lens. From what I've gathered, it's actually more expensive to make high-quality manual zooms; electronic zooms can use floating elements and whatnot to correct certain deficiencies/artifacts when zooming (I assume problems like exposure ramping, for example) while being cheaper to mass-produce. At least that's what I've heard.

speaking of the fixed scarlet lens what is the zoom range and aperture range... I am now shooting with the 7D. is the fixed lens going to have a manual aperture setting or is it going to be more ENG style

It would be possible but more expensive. The Ring on the scarlet fixed is in essence a control knob since the whole lens is fly-by-wire.

They could add another ring, but it would need all the associated sensors and electronics to go along with it to take the input. People are already disappointed with RED due to the current price of the fixed package. Keeping the price down as much as possible I'm sure is at the forefront of RED's design.

The fixed lens is F2.4 / T2.6. RED has not told us the exact zoom range just yet.

The lens is all electronic with one free rotating ring. The ring can be assigned to focus, iris or zoom, shouldn't be hard to toggle between functions or control functions from other buttons on the camera, REDMOTE or LCD touch screen. Given the compact size of the 2/3" fixed lens and the fly-by-wire nature, the single control ring makes a lot of sense.

The image included in the first post above is a DSMC brain with a PL mount and one of the RED Pro Primes.

I knew it, it what just to show the size of the lense compared to the body.
From what I remember the fixed lense is quite similar in size (I said "quite" !).

Anyway I understand why it is made that way.
I can't wait to get my hands on it !

Hi. I am new to these forums, and only became aware of the RED a few weeks ago (I read that Book of Eli was shot with this camera). Eagerly awaiting the launch of Scarlet; it seems all set to bring about a revolution.

I read elsewhere that the fixed lens will have a 72 mm filter thread. Will this lens be internal focusing in nature, meaning will there be any visible change in the length while focusing and/or zooming? Also, will the front element rotate during focus/zoom?

Welcome!

I'm pretty sure it's 77mm.

It is internal focus, so it shouldn't expand in length at all. I'm not completely sure, but I'd fully expect that the front element would stay static.
