  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Day of Understatements... (RED primes)

I think what is lost in my posts on this subject, and I admit not having done a very good job here, is the fact that we embrace "feel". We don't think that "feel" and "resolution" are mutually exclusive. The RED ONE is our best piece of evidence. The RPPs have a soul, just like the R1. But it comes from a high resolution foundation. Our coatings are one of the least mentioned features... that will change as people actually shoot these lenses.

That explains quite a bit...

S4's

S4's

One of the reason Cooke's look warmer is that they are using 15 year old glass. There have been many developments in high blue transmission glasses and a modern lens design should look whiter since you are getting more even spectral distribution. The Cookes shift a little yellow (warmer) because the blue/violet transmission is not great. That is fine and it gives you a different paintbrush.

Here is the issue with the S4's in particular on 4K. It's known that an S4 will not project as well as an UP and probably not as well as an RPP (I have not seen one).

So the Cooke will be softer at the edge "just the right amount" on film. This is pretty much a fact since they have been so successful.

However, the new digital based primes will be optimized more for the low angle of incidence required for a silicon sensor. Lenses that have too large of a sensor angle will suffer in both image quality (color aliasing) and relative illumination. The microlenses on the sensor will start to shade the light if the angle gets too large.

Therefore, the Cooke will be taking the perfect off axis softness (for film) and get degraded even more because of the relative illumination falloff and non optimum angle.

On digital, the S4's might not be the best match.

OK, so I would like to invite everyone who went to the party and saw the lenses themselves, to come forward and voice their opinion...

 Peter

I was there. Held S4's and SS's and the RPP's were SOLID! Lens projector comparisions were OFF THE CHARTS.. way sharper.

BUT, have yet to see anything but Jarred's shots... and I think they look bad ass.

In my humble opinion... a lens built from a sheet of paper and OPTIMIZED for the Sensors... seems like a smart move. (also makes the RED NULL all the more valuable) sensor distance calibration is soooo critical, but I digress)

especially excited to see VFX work with these bad boys. I ordered. Thats all I know and jumped the line to do so.

I thought they were built like tanks and rugged as hell build quality wise.
NOTHING lile the 18-50 which for what it is, aint that bad. but its not
even close. thats my 2 cents

Thanks Tim. Looks like all the others who were, how do I put it, "doubtful" (I am trying to be polite here), have suddenly run out of comments...

If You look in the "Peter and the Primes" thread (http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=30514) I have uploaded many R3D samples there...

:) Peter
