Since the big rip-off, vows of retirement, and the subsequent return to writing, I have noticed my stories getting darker and delving deeper into underbelly material. Gone are the lighthearted stories of yore.

Or as a film friend said - 'You're really in a funk'.

Not sure whether this is a good thing or not. Oh well, guess I'll just run with it and see where it goes. Not like there aren't dark and edgy films out there. Le Necrophile comes to mind. Okay, that's one. Any others?

Guess I'm still working out the anger!

This is weird. I am trying to edit the above post, but cannot, cannot, cannot do it. It freezes every time I hit save. Same thing happens in another filmmaker forum. 10 tries and you need to give it up.

I was going to add 2 Birds (Smáfuglar) out of Iceland to the list. Great film. Then of course there are the exploitation films from the 70s, some of which actually have a story.

Try closing your browser.

I often get problems with sites like wetransfer where clicking on the add media section won't open the dialogue - meaning I can't link a file to upload. Restarting Chrome always fixes this.

Might not be the same thing, but it sounds like the browser doesn't like something to do with the form/data re submission of the forum software.

Speaking of dark Aussie films Animal Kingdom was fantastic. I saw it at Sundance and thought it was the best film I'd seen at the festival...then it won. And now the Edgerton Brothers are doing very well for themselves.

I'm talking about exploring material like this ...

That and darker stuff, angry stuff, twisted stuff.

Maybe it's the new coffee brand I'm drinking.

Yeah...That was weird.

I have always enjoyed your posts. It's a nice break from all the techie stuff that we usually discuss here. But I have noticed your posts getting noticeably more negative lately in the form of rants and complaints about industry issues. Hope everything is going okay with you, but maybe it will lead to more interesting work. Who knows.

Yeah, it was weird. Not sure I really got it. Love the Rembrandtian palette in the opening scene, though. I'm no expert on composing individual shots and sequences, but that looked pretty darn good, story aside. Kinda liked the mutual isolation slant, but didn't quite get the parallel of suicide and fem masturbation, each dependant on melting ice - though I'm sure both could have found other means. I think I missed a metaphor.

Ouch, is my grumpyness that noticable?

I'm working hard to channel it so I guess that's where the dark stuff is bubbling up from. I made a concerted effort in today's writing to lighten the mood and let a few characters live past page five. One, anyways.

I know there is a creative approach to all this. I am going back through old material and researching other ideas to get the groove on. But the darker material is interesting, and I really don't think it has been fully explored in film (as opposed to novels), and for a number of reasons. That and there is a sketchy line to walk separating a mindful presentation of underbelly realities - or just the unpretty ones - and going for shock just for the sake of it.

Not sure where to go from here. I am a writer since birth, and don't think I could do well on a set, or behind a camera, though it has crossed my mind a thousand times. If ever I were to move to the set, I think I would need to be in the Director's chair. Techie stuff is just so not me, but I do have the deepest respect for those that operate cameras and dollies and cranes and booms and so on, and really know what their toys can do, and the limits of those toys, and how to push 'em. It's what makes words on paper suck in that big breath of life.

As a writer I am completely impotent to move my stories beyond my desk. That takes the collective skills and creative vision of all the rest.

I'm going to check out the films mentioned above, see what's out there.

Tried that. Didn't work. I cleared cookies and cache, closed the browser, and it still just won't let me do it. I can't even cancel. Oddly, sometimes it works without a hitch.

Weird.

The Australian film "Wolf Creek" is one of the most sickening twisted dark films I've ever seen.
