  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Dark Knight

Re post 85: I don't think I've ever seen batman compared to 100 Years of Solitude before. While Batman, and many comics contains elements of fantasy I don't really think I'd classify it as magical realism. I especially wouldn't call The Dark Knight an example of that. There were no supernatural forces at work in the film. Sure parts of it involved sci-fi and others required a stretch of the imagination, but none of it forced the viewer to rethink the boundaries of what they think is normally possible in everyday life.

The movie is currently on N:1 in the IMDB Top 250 movies... decapitating The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption. [probably temporarily].

This could mean one of two things:

1. The movie is really extraordinary.

or

2. IMDB is a nice and affordable place to advertise.

:shiftyph34r:

I'm definitely seeing it though... :construction:

Nolan is brilliant and I really liked Batman Begins, it was the best Batman movie for me [except for the acting of the scientologists involved].

I fully understand that the sonar cell phone bit was a statement on the patriot act and the telcos, etc.... thats the thing.... it was too spot on! a 2 year old kid could have gleaned that comparison

I know this movie is making GODLIKE amounts of money and getting insanely good reviews.... and thats good because it was a fun summer movie! I just wish they would stop marketing/reviewing it as this timeless masterwork of cinema, on the level of The Godfather and other films.... because this got me really really stoked!!! and then I was severely let down.... to the point of extreme depression.... my GF had to literally carry me out of the theatre.... I was sobbing uncontrollably and I had couldnt even muster the strength to walk.... I've been sleeping for the past 3 days, only getting out of bed for brief periods, to stare in the mirror and cry

Its a kids movie about a guy who dresses up as a bat - in the universe of those other films he would be clinically schizophrenic - if you saw a guy on 5th avenue dressed as any kind of animal or arachnid apprehending rapists he would be sent to a home for the mentally ill. I legitimately don't understand how a film about a man who "dresses up as a bat and solves crimes in his spare time" could be comparable to adult films that deal with real world scenarios such as the godfather or taxi driver?

And it's because of this way of thinking we've got crappy superhero movies and Fantastic Four crap.

Magic Realism is a style, not something for kids.

Dark Knight is far from a kids movie, and far from a fiasco like Batman & Robin (that looked like a kid was directing).

:calm:

It seems pretty aimed at kids to me, but hey, whatever sets your jelly.

The minute someone starts wearing their underpants outside their trousers, unless they're suffering from a severe Bipolar malady - or at least a chronic itch - I'm lost. All just IMVHO mind you. I just don't see how comic book subject matter could aspire to have the resonance of films that deal with real world scenarios like taxi driver for example.

Then you should see it so you can understand.

I've been waiting for this movie ever since I stepped out of the theaters for Batman Begins. And it was well worth the wait. It exceeded all expectations that I had for it, and I had very high expectations too. I really need to see it in an IMAX theater.

It's weird how some people say things like it's not nearly as good as another movie as if what they're saying is a fact. How "good" a movie is thought to be is clearly a subjective thing. What a 12 year old thinks is different than what a 22 year old thinks, and is different from someone who's 60. And then the differences between girls, guys, whether you like horror, or just pure talking all the time, or whether you need to cry for a movie to be in your top tens. And then everyone gets different feelings depending on what their life's experience has been too. If someone watching the movie has lost their fiance, they could probably relate to Harvey's transformation a lot better than someone who has never even experienced heartbreak.

In my opinion, I wouldn't recommend The Dark Knight to a 13 year old to watch. I think it deals with some pretty dark subject matter, and is very disturbing at times. The fact that your probably laughing while the Joker is blowing up a hospital is a testament as to how warped it is at times.

I definitely think Heath Ledger deserves an Oscar for the role he played. But I wouldn't say for a second that he carried the movie. The main theme of the movie was chaos and anarchy, and it's opposite, which was rules and not lowering yourself to the level of the criminals. The Joker represented anarchy, so of course he had a massive amount of screen time. And the whole thing with Two Face was very necessary as it was an integral part of the whole story. It wasn't just added on there. It led to the very thought provoking ending of self sacrifice for the greater good. And it was no small sacrifice.

There are so many layers of small lessons and themes that are embedded in The Dark Knight. But you can still be entertained even if you just wanna watch Batman beat on the bad guys, cause there's lots of amazing action sequences too. (And I could follow the action pretty good at most times.) And it's a great detective crime story movie too, not just a comic book movie. It comes through on so many different levels, and that's what makes it such a great triumph to me. I personally have never left a theater with such a sense of awe.

the movie was good. it wasnt Godlike.
I think it is was wayyyyy more hyped up than it should have been.
It was fun and i enjoyed it... however i think the death of heath ledger had alot to do with the overinflated hype.. dont get me wrong. he did a great job. the movie looked fantasticle and everything.. nothing but good from me..

but.. it was overhyped

I loved it. Everyone will have their own opinions about it but comparing it to The Godfather or Shawshank Redemption is just silly. Its a comic book movie and very well done one at that! I left the theatre feeling two different emotions,
1. Too bad Heath Ledger died so young,

2. They should never make another Batman film again. This one has finally done justice to the series and they should leave it at that...

My opinion, not law :)

Heh: Godfather 3. (I saw all three movies one after another on DVD and godfather 3 was a huge what-the-hell-happened.)

Have you seen it?
I have.

I apologize, incidentally, for presuming you haven't, but your posts made it sound like you hadn't. If you have, that's something else entirely.

I thought it lived up to the hype, and believe me, I'm not one to say so lightly. I think Pan's Labyrinth is wildly overrated and I didn't like The Prestige, so I'm neither likely to go along with hype nor a blind fan of Christopher Nolan.

I had high expectations going into this film. They were met and exceeded. Can't complain. :w00t:

Like I said, this whole comparing movies thing is pointless :) One man's nostalgia is another man's "huh?". I'm sure if you asked some 90 year old Italian citizen what the best movie ever made was they might say "The Bicycle Thief". It's all relative, and thats fine. I'm not gonna tell someone they're wrong. In fact, for most people who prefer to assign a #1 rank to a movie like The Godfather, or The Shawshank Redemption, there will probably NEVER be another movie that contends that decision, and thats all due to nostalgia; emotions, period of life. There's just no point to compare/rank movies due to all of this...

HOWEVER

Condescending a film only because it's based off of a comic book hero reveals and incredible amount of ignorance. Superheros should not just be regarded as kiddy crap, or nonsense about a guy dressed up like a bat. Superheros are very much like Greek mythological characters of the past if you think about it. In fact, usually you can discover some of the most admirable and intriguing aspects of mankind in the most extreme personalities (Batman, The Joker). You just have to OPEN YOUR MIND and look for these things. Or sit back, and watch some badass IMAX. :)

This movie wasn't even in the same ballpark as Shawshank. That's a steaming pile of BS.

I'm right there with you buddy! Come on, who really believes that snoozefest Shawshank Redemption could ever be elevated up into the same ballpark as The Dark Knight?

I think they're stirring that pile of BS just to get a rise out of you.

Now what kind of a prick would do a thing like that?
