  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Dark Knight

Most of the action in The Dark Knight is shown in wide, clear, long takes. Except a few moments of one to one fighting, which get a little muddy... I guess it's a symptom of having a dude dressed like a bat getting in a fist fight in a brightly lit room. Could easily get silly...!

I remember in the "new nightmare" you see freddy in a hospital or something (i barely remember this, but it has stuck with me) and it's pretty bright and he is floating up the wall.. i remember thinking way back then how amazing that was, seeing freddy in a bright spot like that instead of always lurking. really got me good.

(i think batman in a bright room is the way to go!)

hey ruairi i thought silent city was sick. is there any where on the net that talks about how you did all the effects and sequences and stuff? the crane up and move into the city wtf.. how much of the film was diy style by you and how much was other peoples work

Haven't seen it yet but strongly dislike the production design of the Bat Costume and some of the vehicles as seen in the promo material and trailers. The Joker is spot on and fits into the real world but feel they are still stuck in the last series in regard to the Bat Costume.

It would have been a bold and cool move when they re-launched to go Miller style and get a grey suit up and running. You only have to read The Dark Knight Returns to see it could have been awesome.

To all who didn't like the fight scenes in BB or TDK... Nolan said in one of the commentaries, or in a BTS... he shot it like that for one, Cause it might actually turn silly if it was just wide shots... and two, your not supposed to see batman... hes a dark knight, so its just fades of all fighting.. thats what nolan does

Yeah, I thought the pace of the cuts was his ninjitsu stylings.

FUN FUN FUN

Can someone tell me what the IMAX aspect ratio was for this movie? I know the regular version in theaters is going to be 2.35:1. Does the IMAX pan and scan?

My guess is the 35mm footage went through the DMR process, so it will remain in whatever aspect they shot in, then when the IMAX footage kicks in, the image goes into the full IMAX 15 perf 70 aspect and fills up the entire screen. Thats what I hope at least. I'm gonna try and hit up the Metreon here in SF hopefully opening night. I can't wait!

That's pretty sweet. I've never even been to an IMAX theater before. I think this movie will be the first. By the way, what exactly is DMR? I know it's a proprietary used to convert 35mm film to fit IMAX screens.

IMAX DMR (Digital Re-Master) is essentially a process of uprezzing, degraining, and post sharpening. From what I've seen with the recent wave of 35mm and HD originated films hitting IMAX screens, the aspect ratios remain what they were natively shot in, and they letterbox the footage for IMAX presentation. So the width of the screen remains as large as the IMAX screen.

One exception I know of was Scorsese's "Shine a Light", which had windowed documentary footage leading up to the concert event, possibly shot with HD cameras, but then the actual concert was 35mm blown up to fill the entire IMAX screen. It was quite an experience when suddenly the whole screen lit up. I don't know the exact details here though. But I guess the rule of thumb would be for most blockbusters, they tend to letterbox/crop the footage to retain the correct aspect ratio for IMAX DMRs.

f'n phenomenal, like said: hands down best superhero movie ever.....I mean it was more like a crime saga than a superhero movie, and I had no problems with the action sequences, I think done any different would have compromised the credibility of the realism Nolan was going for....he could have easily put nipples on the suit as well :)
Phister, like usual (I'm a Phister fanboy) shot it beautifully
and Heath Ledger, my god, scary good.

Read this: http://www.icgmagazine.com/current.html

"... Nolan explained that the rest of the film would be produced in anamorphic 35mm format in 2.4:1 aspect ratio. The IMAX film would be down-rezzed to 35mm film in anamorphic format for screenings in traditional cinemas. The 35mm film would be blown up and intercut with IMAX film for display on large format screens."

Saw it 10am today at the Metreon here in SF, in IMAX of course.

It was amazing folks, go see it! I even had to take a leak halfway through but I couldn't bring myself to miss any of it.

The IMAX scenes were incredible..I forgot how amazing REAL 15 perf 70 IMAX really is. The 35mm DMR stuff looked great no doubt...but not even close to the IMAX stuff (expectedly). And I'd definitely support all the raves about Heath Ledger in the film as well, he WAS the Joker.

I'm surprised the film didn't go through a DI and was color timed when looking at the credits. (Perhaps somebody would know if VFX portions of it did go through DI??)

I thought it looked great!

I think the article in AC about it mentioned 5.6K and 8K scanning.

Saw it today, conventional film projection in a so-so theater, but I have never been riveted to my seat like that. I couldn't bring myself to take my eyes off the screen. I don't think I've been that involved in a film ever. I really was blown away. Already in my personal top 10. I plan to see it a few more times in theaters, hopefully I'll be able to see it in IMAX. It was good enough that I went onto my IMDB voting history and revised all but 4 of my highest ratings downwards.
