  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The D90 Conundrum

I have a D90 and I love it: but not for video. That rolling shutter is for the birds. After looking around a lot, I ended up with the camera because I already have access to an extensive Nikkor lens setup and the price/quality was right, DX notwithstanding. It takes great stills but in no way is that video useable for production. It shoots 720p 24fps (23.976? QT says true 24) in Apple OpenDML JPEG within an AVI wrapper. They open just fine on the Mac, though having Perian installed might make a difference.

I use my D90 for 90% of my stills work; it's a wonderful camera not just for it's price bracket. I could go on and on about how it's such a fantastic camera...

however

the video takes a lot of control and hard work to get it acceptable for any medium besides web videos. If you're planning on adding any visual effects onto the video you better have the camera locked off, your subject very still and go through AE to sort out the pixel binning madness...

Hi Howard, horses for courses, if it works for you that's all that matters.

As for that video... not to be rude, but my iPhone takes comparable images
and it looked just like a PHONE CAM to me... but maybe it was the compression?

Dude,

You know, I was going to let your post go and wash away with all the other detritus on here--but changed my mind cause obviously you did in fact mean to be rude, despite your qualifier.

I'm just a guy who started in this business lugging a 3/4 inch portapack around and I'm having some fun with a useful toy that will help me in my business. I'm not bashing Red. I want a Scarlet.

I come here to learn and do appreciate the constructive comments on this thread and many other threads. I think your comments were insulting. Why don't you post some of your iPhone shots on your non-existent website? I would love to see them.

Thanks for your "kindest regards" but somehow I doubt your sincerity.
