  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Coming "Highspeed Revolution"?

Maybe Jim should just skip making a cheaper 1,000fps 1080p camera and simply juice up the Epic X or Epic FF35 to shoot 1,000fps!!!! Imagine that.... 6K RAW at 1,000fps! He could all it "The Destroyer of Worlds" or something like that.

Mark, perhaps it is a translation issue, as I take it English is not your first. No insult, just that I'm not completely sure of what you are trying to say.

Abel Cine Tech and Vision Research have done extensive testing. We can make lots of information available to you. But there is always some information that is kept private, both because they can be easily misinterpreted without context and because they can reveal proprietary information about the technology in the camera or the technology used for testing. This is a competitive business after all.

The v640 is shipping in limited quantities because it is a very complicated camera to produce and there needs to be extensive work done on each and every machine. I'm sure the same is true for the Weisscam HS-2. No one is going to be spitting these cameras out by the truck load because they are simply not that sort of item. But the v640 is available -- if you are in Florida that means you are in Abel's territory so you can feel free to contact me off list and we can work with you on this.

Comparative tests are performed all the time, and I can tell you exactly why they are kept private. Two reasons, perspective ad good manners.

Perspective because when a test is conducted it is almost always done with a particular task or workflow in mind, so the very process of the testing can color the results. Testing can be complicated, taking a great deal of time, resources and money. Whoever paid for that testing owns the results. If it was done for a client - say a studio trying to decide which camera to use for a movie - then the studio owns that material and as a matter of course they do not wish to share it. And frankly they may have been trying for a specific result so the test would not be complete and people could jump to improper conclusions.

If a test is conducted inhouse then that still means that a manufacturer had to let "the other guy" borrow a camera, so it would be pretty poor manners to turn around an publish the results of that test saying the other guy's camera was inferior. You will never hear me state the failings of a competitor's product; I will only extol the virtues of the gear we represent. Anything else is just plain rude. If another manufacturer or reseller decides to do this then that is the way they play the game, but it is not our way.

Mark, if you want to arrange to get a bunch of high speed cameras in and run comparison tests, do all the post work and then share that with the world, then by all means be my guest. But it will be an expensive exercise for you.

Please don't think I'm being rude -- I don't wish to be. This is just the reality of the business we are all in. I truly believe in the values of the Phantom line, including the HD Gold and the v640. I'm sure there are those who will have a preference for a Weisscam HS-2 based on the results they wish to achieve, but I have no shame in cheering on the Phantoms.

Mitch, i think it was an translation issue, thats right.

I know that many things can be misinterpreted.
The technology is nothing which is to keep "top secret",
it is always the maximum posible technology at the moment.

Which informations can you give me, which are important for me?

At the moment, i am in australia. If i was back i'll contact you.

Do you have tested the Weisscam or another similar to the Phantom?
If yes, can you tell some pros and cons?

If you work many years with a camera type,
you will in future do this too, thats right, and do best work with this cameras.

I don't think you are rude

Thanks Mitch

Phantom HD Gold Versus HS2

Phantom HD Gold Versus HS2

Hi Guys
I have just done side by side testing of Phantom HD Gold and Weisscam HS2.
There are many differences and there are pros and cons of each.
I used to run the Wcam HS-1 before i ran Phantom HD and i loved it.
The on paper specs can tell u a lot, like Global shutter versus Rolling.
14bit versus 12bit. 2000fps versus 1000fps, Cinemag versus Digimag.
But they dont tell u everything.
For me all in all everything pointed clearly at Phantom HD Gold, because i want to be using today with raw data for the kind of work i have and will be doing. The weisscam hs-2 made great pictures, but i personally prefered the phantom. But this is my opinion. The HS2's major adavatanges is its 1 1/3 stop advantage of asa which i believe is 400 asa to the PHD Gold's 160 asa.
HS2 2000fps @ 1080p to PHD Gold 1052 @ 1080p. The HD Gold has alot of advantages too.
Again this is my opinion only.
A lot of people will choose Hs2 over PHD Gold initially because it is new, especially for studio jobs, but after that it will be chosen on its own merits.
feel free to email me for a more direct q and a if u want

Just finished a shoot for a corp client, The scientist comes into the lab grabs a lab coat from the rack while walking by, as seen from a following camera, cut to long lens frontal shot, ramp to 120 in RED1 2K presto... coat flys out behind like a cape coming around the shoulder of super scientist, looked great set the character.

We have the kind of HS coming up at up to Epic..@250 which is more than adequate for most of the stuff we'd shoot in dramatic or nature. Bullets n all are more in the wierd science category. twixtor etc. can also time map these shots as was done here for a slightly slower effect.... sometime more than slightly. remember 24fps base 50fps twice the light 100fps 4 times the light 200 8 times the light. given HMI flicker problems etc. pretty soon there are serious lighting heat problems. some of this is better done in post for the efficiency. I think this is just another way that digital/raw has changed acquisition from filters and looks on the shooting floor to making it happen in post.
