The Clutch

Hey Rob,

Thank you for the information. Can you clarify at all the real differences between Gunner & Clutch for you? I'm a bit stuck and looking at both.

Thank you!

I've got the Mantis, a clutch bought off another RU and I just ordered the Gunner (after testing out someone else's). Last, I've got a Red Rock POJ I haven't touched since I bought into RED a few months ago.

Needless to say, the Clutch and the Gunner whip the pants off the other rigs. Most of the reasons have already been mentioned in this thread, but customizability, "feel", weight, and balance are the biggies. The value kicks in after a few long shoots. You'll consider those past spent bucks well served. I hedged on the Clutch until I had a few other accessories on the shelf, but going back, I would put it somewhere in the top-5 list of purchases. The fast second is the Gunner. I've got a particular style of personal shooting that the Gunner fits really well with. But then I've got a case of glass that requires the Clutch. If I had to pick one personally, I'd go with the Gunner. But if I was recommending either or, I'd stick with the Clutch.

Hope that helps!

*EDIT: Tell you what; I'll gladly sell you my Mantis, but only after you try out the Clutch, then decide for yourself. I don't think you'll want it after.

Weight and size are the big ones. but main difference is that the gunner keeps your body really small as everything is close - the clutch makes you a bigger and more importantly has front and back stabilizer pads... so you can out your arms down and rest without having to put it down. the store has plenty of pics to demonstrate differences. BOTH are idea really as the gunner will be awesome in tight spaces where you want to keep your form factor very narrow. The clutch can let you shoot all day and with a little more stability

The negative thing on both of these is that hey don't have angle adjustments for the shoudler pad.

There is angle adjustment on the clutch, but some people don't find it to be enough. I personally have no problem with the amount of angle on the shoulder pad.

You mean that the pad has an angle? At least I can't see from the pictures that there is any way to change the angle and that was what I meant...

Yes, sorry if I misunderstood what you meant... the pad has an angle to it, but no it is not adjustable. This really isn't a negative, it's pretty standard, and angle adjustment isn't really necessary. Have you used the clutch? I definitely encourage you to use one for a week and see what you think :)

No I haven't had change to test it yet... but I've used pads with similar angles and after a long day of shooting it starts to be annoying when I have to rise my shoulder a little all the time or use another body positions to adjust the horizon.

Been shooting for the last week, most of it hand-held with a 25-30lb CLUTCH rig for 8-12 hour days... it's the most comfortable shoulder rig I have ever used, and aside from the initial adjustment to having that much weight on one side of my body, the fatigue is minimal to nonexistent.

Not sure if you can compare the angle of the clutch pad to others if you haven't tested/actually seen the rig in person, but it sits pretty darn level without any crazy body position adjustments.

YMMV of course! Everyone's built differently.

Thanks again for the additional info! Where exactly in the store can I find these wonderful config photos? I see them scattered around in posts here and there but can't seem to find em thanks again.

revisiting this thread.

do you really need the second 19mm UNIVERSAL MOUNT at back of the DSMC SHOULDER PAD?

no other way of mounting the COLLARBONE to the DSMC SHOULDER PAD?

I purchased parts of the CLUTCH here and wondering if I need to that 19mm UNIVERSAL MOUNT.

It works just fine without it on the back. But it's handy to mount battery plates, proxi recorders, and the brain of the ff remote. ; )

All I have heard is how wonderful the craftsmanship on this piece of kit is. Value per dollar what it can do in different configurations... On the list on things I would love but I have one item I def need to get before that.

Buy with extreme confidence... Take the time to set it up right, heck even go to RSH... The folks there know this gear inside and inside of inside... :)

I got mine together thanks to REDUSER Marketplace and RED.

I love this unit and have taken it apart many times for different settings.

My only beef is that one of the RED purchased Ball Socket & Handle seems to slip out of the locked position.

Might have to send it back.
