Looking for a decent backup or alternative EVF for your R1 while the bomb is backordered?

You can get the Cineroid EVF from HotRod Cameras (pretty much the only reseller around in the USA at this point) for under $1000. Hunter Richards did a pretty good write-up here - so I don't really need to reiterate what he has said - but it's not a bad piece of gear for the price while you wait for your Bomb EVF:

It does indeed work with the R1, and if you use something like a Redbyte Decimator 2 you get the optimal selection of having HD-SDI for video village and a feed to your EVF via the HDMI port on the decimator 2.

But then you'll only have the SDI feed without all the info usually in the EVF/LCD, right?

unless you enable menus on that output... but yeah.

By the way there is only one EVF of this type currently available on the market...I'm sure you can guess what that means without me spelling it out ;)

Having a heck of a time trying to get a callback from anyone so I can buy one. Hot Rod camera- no reply. Cineroid USA- no reply.

Dan, Jacek at Optitek is a dealer for for Cineroid. I have always found him to be very quick to respond. His email is jacek2 at optitek dot org.

I had a heck of a time getting a hold ofHot Rod Camera. I eventually did and ordered one (its on the way).

the cineroid usa rep was awesome to deal with, he emailed back incredibly fast, if you want his email, drop me a pm.

just got our cineroid, but can't get it to work with our R1. we don't really want to get a RedByte. anyone know a workaround or settings we should use on our R1?

Under: System - Monitor - Preview set your Preview to Video [720P]. I know you have already done this, but, if you got the model with the loop through, make sure the cable is attached to the IN port. If all that checks out and it still doesn't work, it is probably your cable.

Carlos, cool running into you last night. The Cineroid certainly doesn't have the resolution of my RED EVF. But it weighs nothing. It runs for about 4 hours on inexpensive, lightweight camcorder batteries. It has peaking and 1:1 zoom which helps make up for the lower resolution. So, overall, it was a good purchase. Wish it had been available years ago.

Sounds like a solid piece of gear! And it was great running into you as well! Hoping to swing by the Patriot Act set and say 'hi' and some point during production.

By the way - this will display Red Menu Data and other information if you set the Red output up correctly :)

Are you sure of this? My cineroid is showing a regular output ok, although it needs a refresh via the menu when you initially turn it on, but it doesn't show anything when I activate the menus on the DVI output.

Cheers,
Damien
