  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The case for a 720p recording-option in Scarlet...

I still do quite a lot of shooting that involves both long-form recording and standard-definition output only. So a built-in option of recording in downscaled 720p has a great deal of appeal for me, and I'm sure it does for many others too.

The primary advantages of it would be smaller file-sizes, longer recording times, and less time required to process your footage - a boon for those of us who supplement our cinematography work with videography-style work as well.

Personally, having a smaller (720p) format built into the camera would save me from having to keep a conventional video camera as well as the Scarlet. And that could well be the difference between owning two Scarlets (and the versatility of 2-camera setups that provides) and owning just one and a conventional video camera.

I second that! I would also like a 1080p and 720p RGB recording option. I do not use a Mac or PC to edit my footage, so this option would be ideal. I do not want to buy yet another Video Camera when I could have an all in one Digital Cinema camera that will record RAW/RGB and stills in one package.

Well I'm not thinking of RGB recording, or shooting smaller formats using crops of the sensor either. Rather, using the full sensor but recording the RAW RedCode files at smaller resolutions, just like Canon are already doing with their 50D and their 5DII DSLRs.

I am working on the assumption that same technology could be implemented for the Red cameras though.

what alot of people want, I believe, is an easier post route. 720 RGB that you could edit
straight away without processing and finish and output on a modest nonlinear system is what many people need. That being said, I am not sure Scarlet would be the camera for these type of jobs. Sure it would be nice to have one camera do it all, and maybe Red
is cooking up such a plan, but as Red has said before the ability to do RAW and RGB or some flavor of compressed digital output like P2 is not possible right now.

but change is good.

720P (1.2K) RAW would not get you 720P resolution...

You'd probably want to record 2K RAW minimum for 720P video and 3K RAW for 1080P.

I think some people are confusing two different issues -- do you want a camera that records 720P or 1080P video without the need for post processing from RAW to RGB? Because 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 "RAW" Bayer is not 720P or 1080P video. And if all you want are smaller RAW files than 2K REDCODE, then why use video numbers like "720" or "1080" instead of horizontal pixel measurements like 1K? Or if all you want are small file sizes, why not use more compression?

2.5k gives a safe 1920 (720p) lines with negligible aliasing. 1.7k gives a safe 1280 (720p) lines with negligible aliasing.

However, remember these would be minimum conditions given a approximate resolution factor of 78%. Change that resolution factor and the numbers change accordingly. Also, they are minimum conditions. Just because you start with more pixels on the sensor, it doesn't mean you can achieve a clean 720p or 1080p. You could still do the downsampling wrong in oh-so-many ways and achieve a nasty result.

Well, if I do it, it will look nice, but I'm trying to educate in general, rather than the specific about Scarlet, say. In the general case, you need enough samples to make a nice image, but in the specific, it's what you do with those samples that matters. Some camera companies produce nice results from a large number of samples..... Others....

yea I want 576p, 576i, 480p, 480i, 320p, 240p, .flv, mp2 formats etc. And oh I forgot I want webcamera mode for sure.
Eh and why this camera has 3K mode? Not very useful I think :)
