  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Camera's incredible! The Workflow documentation Sucks!

Hi BigT,

In the time you've spent writing the posts pointing to FXPHD, you could have just posted the solution. :)

But seriously...

I think you may want to be clear about what you're offering. FXPHD is an incredible resource, and Mike/John deserve huge kudos for getting it up and running. But it is a for-profit site. If you're going to be putting it there and people will need to pay for it, then I think you may want to be clear about that.

Best,

Lucas

Thank you Big T, you Kiwis Rock!!

....just kidding.

I wonder if some ambitious administrator on REDUSER could start an archive of the "best of" posts.

Not unlike Cinematography.net.

When there is a really great thread that explains something fairly coherently it goes to "thread heaven" and sits for eternity for all to read in an alphabetized and organized (i.e. easy to reference) way.

This may be more work than someone is willing to take on, but it would certainly cut down on redundant posting. With a couple of thousand more cameras rolling out, we are bound to become tired of answering the question...

"What is an RSX file"?

you'll have to do your own render TEST on proxy vs. r3d files ...

so far i've gone with rendering 2k proxies in FCP to 2k cineform clips ( then taking those 2k cineform clips to a PC to edit) ...
rendering from r3d does look better in A/B comparisions but i have to say the 2k proxies renders look excellent with final out as blu ray ( viewing 8ft screen) ..
i'm a bit lazy so for my personal projects it just isn't worth my TIME waiting for renders from r3d files (30X more time rendering on a Feb 2007 24" iMac)

if you want the BEST and time & $$ is not a consideration then render using r3d files ... if time & $$ is a consideration then you'll have to do some test to see what fits your project for it's final out/delivery ???

I have a problem with my final cut always shutting down.
I started editing in fcp 6.0 and I had to restart it all the time so I upgraded to 6.04 but then I had to render every clip on the timeline and the sequence didn´t use REDCODE automaticly but I still had to render even if I shose REDCODE manually in sequense settings. (everything else looked correct)
So I went back to 6.0.
I used the _M proxys and all the clips are located on the internal disk in a Macbook pro. Does anyone have a solution to this problem with the fcp shutting down.

Second question:
Big T or anyone else here who just edit in the _M-files, can you make dissolves and other effects in the proxys? I think I have red somewhere that it´s not possible to do that.
When i´ve tried I have to render it but I still can´t play it after rendering and fcp just shuts down.

...and why no one has published a book yet...amazing.

It must be because things are changing day to day. Once the dust settles (a little!) I am sure we will see a book that covers it all!

Yes, a book: Red for Dummies

With things changing as they do...
...they would be working on Edition 4, when the 1st hits the stands:excl:
:glare:

Don't care.....simple list of steps in one place is enough.

Come up with a list of most common workflows.

As those edit tools receive an upgrade so might the workflow.

the list would attract the scrutiny of the forum. (yes i know there are nuances/alternatives!!)

The notion that everyone who wants to wrangle r3d.... has to go thru an R&D phase to learn about it is starting to piss me off.

It (& investment in legacy systems) is causing a HUGE barrier in the takeup of Red. Business is hard enough without the good guys (Redusers) creating barriers for themselves. Is this dumb or what!!!
D

Mother of God, suddenly I feel like I know nothing!

Since when can you render out a edit of your project in FCP and get viable results?

Why even have log and transfer? And I always thought the proxies were a dead end without a program like Crimson?

I can't help but feel a little lost here, like I was misunderstanding something fundamental.

And, Lucas, I personally would be first in line for a Scratch suite. It's amazing software. But it's out of my price range. There's obviously going to be a gap among RedUsers between those that can afford a Scratch suite (or any pro color grading suite), or can afford to finish every project at a post house and those that are looking for a solution with programs they already had (Adobe Suites/ Final Cut Suites).

Basic workflows

Basic workflows

Both Arri & Panavision have often given basic workflow documents so the comment on this was incorrect. A new start up "Codex" also gives workflow examples so the original request is not unreasonable. As we have done finding out how to use the Red codes has been trial & error but then Apple & Microsoft are not great at publishing documents either hence why there is a huge third party market.
Of greater issue as Red users grow internationally is the lack of support outside of the US (yes the world always seems to have to play second fiddle) and the time difference if you want to get issues resolved quickly is not on your side and eventually it either needs to have regional agents or set up regional offices.

Sounds good, but i dont think RED is able to do it right now. When they're mature enough, it's matter of time.

I have nothing to do with FXPHD, I'm just a dude giving away some free knowledge. I just need to get back to base (still shooting) and I'll think of a easy, simple way to explain it all. Some people will get it like in the first 2 seconds, others will take about 5 minutes.

If you want it, take it, If you don't, then I don't care.

Illl put it on the RED FORUM as well, don't worry

Give me a week or so to get over the job I'm on.

Scratch rules too. Except I'm on a MAC!:pinch:

Never had the shutting down problem sorry mate, Using EXTREME RT in LOW video playback, you don't have to RENDER. Unless you do a dissolve, Only time line render those 2 clips.
At the end of the day, You need a computer with some horse power and grunt to churn out 2k stuff.
1K proxies editing can be done in real time in a good specced mac lap top.
Same thing though, Using EXTREME RT in LOW video playback.

Can't help you on the shut down thing, but it has happened to us once or twice.
Also your time line sequence should be in PRO RES.

Have a look at this FCP setting for 1k.

Dude...
Work flow for RED is piss easy.
The easiest way to get going is to put the (1k) (M) QT proxie movies your new camera generates into a FCP time line sequence and simply press play. Use the 2k (h) movies if you have a computer with some grunt.
Make sure your sequence timeline is set to unlimited RT and video playback to low.

If you like what you just edited... then Press RENDER and save your brand new Apple PRO RES 10 bit movie to your desktop or where ever.

Your project is done.

Big T, I'm with your PISS EASY workflow in theory, save for one catch--and it's a biggie: how do you monitor your picture? The proxies are such funky sizes, my Blackmagic card can't spit them out full frame on the fly... (And don't say: "buy a Kona 3")

Even though it's an offline edit, you still need to see what you're doing--and more importantly, so does your (my) client... Thoughts??

What about effects...simple ones like fades, dissolves, multiple streams...can you stack the shots on the timeline and have these effects render out too?

Take a breath, it's so easy that my kids are doing it on there Mac's and one of them is only 11.

LOL But so true. My kids (5 and 3) are fascinated with cameras and computers. My 5 year old wants to work with all this stuff, but she's just not quite there yet. Had my 12 year old nephew over the weekend before last. We shot a bunch of greenscreen stuff with him and my kids. He was keying the footage with different backgrounds, processing his footage out for redrushes without me telling him how other than I told him to use half res high and ProRes. I've been teaching him all sorts of stuff, and he soaks it right up.
