  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Best Zooms for Red

New Nikkor (14-24 + 24-70) plus 70-200 AF-S glass coupled with the Birger Nikon mount.

Or the Canon L and EF-S (as for instance that marvelous 10-22mm piece) lenses series added to the Birger Canon mount.

Is anyone else worried that a functioning copy of the birger has not yet been demonstrated and that the company has not been very responsive in the last few months ?

I want to see them succeed as much as everybody else does... It's just seeming a little not real.

If someones used a working one, spill the beans - how was it ?

hey, matt.. what's your input on a fair comparision between your cooke zoom lenses and that russian 35OPF29-1 25-80 mm?..

I don't think it's meaningful to compare a studio zoom and a compact zoom. Each has it's application... If you can get a nice 350PF29-1 for a good price do it. I'm keeping mine and planning on using it for run and gun zoom lens situations. The Red 18-50 fits in a similar category as do century 17-35, 28-70 and other converted still lenses.

We had a non-working Birger Canon prototype on RED #8 in October. Me and Corben speak with Erik Widding of Birger fairly often. In fact I spoke with him last week about the pending arrival of one of his functional Birger Canon prototypes that should arrive at GibCor shortly this month. We will be one of the few entities to beta test the unit, and naturally we will report our impressions here on RED User.

GibCor was originally scheduled to have one of the Birger Canon working prototypes a month ago for LART, and Erik was scheduled to attend. But that didn't end up happening.

Birger is a highly experienced, but small staff company. They are busting their rears to get the adaptors out, and I'm sure they wouldn't delay if they didn't need to. I'm not worried in the least about them delivering a good product when they can roll them out.

When GibCor gets the working Canon adaptor prototype we'll give you a call Matt so you can check it out and do some test shooting with us.

That would be great, as I already mentioned I really want to see Birger make a great product and succeed.

Yes, I consider myself as Birger's customer since I have an order running. No complaints but only a feeling of trust there. If not, there wouldn't be deal. Same as Jim before, Erik has given the same level of service, proper support and open information. There's no reason for any sort of complaining so far. I hope the same in the (up)coming "days" ahead, sure.

So far? 100%

Here's an update from Erik's post #318 on the Biger Reservation thread. Sorry don't know how to quote or link a single post like all you cool boarders:

Just a couple of pictures to let people know what we have been up to. The first is a rig (that is presently sitting on my conference room table) that is going back to one of our Beta testers today. It is a pre-beta lens mount, which also happens to be a production lens mount that has been adapted to the camera, rather than one custom designed for it.

The second is a picture of a pre-production board in the pick and place machine. The board takes about 90 seconds to populate. (The truly observant will note that I placed the board back in the machine, after it had been through the oven.)

We have had pre-beta units on Boris (or was it Natasha), city named cameras, early numbered cameras, upgraded city named cameras, and in a few days (when aquavideo's camera gets here) on real production 100+ serial number cameras. Every single time something has been different, that has materially affected the design of our product. The mantra "everything is subject to change" frankly sucks from the perspective of a third party developer...

Out of respect to Jim, Stuart and all of the others at RED that are doing such great work, I had chosen not to say this until today. But this is really getting absurd. I made deposits refundable to avoid this kind of negative energy. I haven't even charged the credit cards yet of 2/3 of the reservation holders, because we didn't need to be sitting on money prior to freezing the last details of the product. We only took deposits by credit card so everyone would have that added layer of protection. I have kept the "free remote" offer open. I am starting to understand why RED's standard answer to a complaint is "your deposit is fully refundable".

We can't finalize the design and tooling until I get aqua's camera. Aqua will get his camera back with a pre-beta unit. Which will make three units in circulation. The other two are with the DP of a popular national TV program and a production company that shoots mostly commercials. Both have agreed to post, and or allow me to post, some frames next week.

Beta units will be available one to two weeks after that date, and production will start up another week after that. I will post next when I have something new to communicate.

do you know what's the most funny over here?.. this was a cinestyle thread and now there's just another birger thread.. :whistling: :bleh:
