  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

THE beast 32 core HACKINTOSH is ready.....CS6 vs REDROCKET

Of course Dear Ketch ;) for you no problem..
I also expect new macpro, windows unfortunately does not have the ProRes encoding, television and storage at very important to me like 4k proress 4444, Windows for this is a shit.
We have to wait ... this hack is very good to 32 cores can do better, for now has no problem, missing a good nvidia card, and then it is a bomb.
But I have so much time and it is very difficult in remote desktop ..
Now I'm waiting good news from Jeff for hp z820 ....

Maybe later this month I have to go to Rome if you're up to see you;) MASTER REDMAN.

ciao
Luigi

Cool, lets see how this month plays out, need to figure out timings for my New Zealand trip, as I'm not sure the exact departure date, and even less the return date, as I could stay just couple of weeks or several months... ;)

Wow!, I want one of this!!!

Whats the cinebench score?, cpu and gpu?. Geekbench is ok, but i prefer cinebench because you can get opengl results, very important for graphics app.

I can wait to see this beast overcloked to 4Ghz!... is possible overclock with super micro motherboards?...

Any problem if I buy and install only one cpu?. Can I install 96GB of memory, or only half?...

The only relevant score for Cinebench is the Render (CPU) score. Just posted above that I got a 31.09. The OpenGL score is mostly dependent on your GPU choice. I'll do some comparative testing when I really get to swapping GPUs in and out of this system. I have a Quadro 6000 in it right now, but I'm also going to try single and dual overclocked GTX580 -- EVGA Classified Ultra -- and have a GTX690 on order, but don't know when I'll get it.

No overclocking features on the SuperMicro boards, they concentrate on stability and reliability for critical workstations and servers. If you want the best overclocking features, then look at the ASUS board, possibly the EVGA SR-X. Unfortunately, the E5-26xx CPUs are multiplier locked and already run super hot, especially the 150W rated ones like the 3.1GHz. They all have the same base clock... So overclocking features are kinda moot. I hear that all the Ivy Bridge engineering samples floating around are not multiplier locked, so that's a promising sign. We should see them hit the market within the next year.

Installing only one CPU cuts your memory capacity and available PCIe lanes in half, as those controller components are integrated into the CPUs. Maximum RAM capacity with the E5's is 256GB per CPU. You will also be limited by the number of memory slots on your motherboard. If you know for sure you won't ever add the second CPU, then there are motherboard options that offer a single CPU socket still tailored for the Xeon E5 platform, such as the SuperMicro X9SRA board. If you're only going to install one CPU, then you're probably better off to go with an i7 desktop CPU and overclock. For that approach, I would recommend the ASUS Rampage IV Extreme motherboard or (can't recall the model) the to X79 motherboard from Gigabyte. You'll be sacrificing two cores and won't have as robust of a memory subsystem among a few other things. But with something like an i7-3960X CPU overclocked to 4.4GHz, it should do better than the single Xeon CPU for most everything. That's the down-side of the Xeons, they're rather expensive.

Thanks Jeff for your detailed reply!

I think I will wait until i can buy both CPU... because i need a lot of pci lanes and ram...

I like to over clock the system, because with not so expensive cpu you can get the top performance. I'm not worried about multiplier, in fact i have a i980x and i used a 21x multiplier ( the stock is 25x and its unlocked). I prefer to go up with bclk, i have it at 200. But for sure i need to tweak voltage.

OpenGL in my case is not only dependent of my gpu. Without over clock and gtx480 i get 37fps (with tiger). With over clock i get 47fps, the over clock is only for the cpu and bclk not pci express. Maybe with windows this is different!

What are the best compatible rack mount cases for this mother board?

This board is not necessarily recommended. It it just a second board I had to test this with.

One really important requirement for the hackintosh is a properly working audio system. This board above has no built in audio as it's a server board. When first testing CS6, and even general quicktime playback, it does not play back the video if you are missing audio. I had to go out and buy a USB audio device for it to work properly.

The supermicro cases that are quiet desktop cases with 8 bays, also have rackmount rail kits you can buy. They convert from a tower to a 4U server with rails.

Thanks Joe,

The Dimensions looks great, especially the Depth of 25.5" (648mm).

I wonder what the rails look like on it.

The one thing about SuperChassis is the noise, I wonder if you can replace the fans to make them quieter?

Have you heard the sound coming out of this case?

The one I had sounded like a jet taking off when I turn it on.

Luigi, the fking beast!
Always funny to see the beasts you mad pc men build.
Very first time I opened a pc yesterday. Was proud and had real fun (very simple moving hd to optical bay, mounting ssd and swapping memory on the refurbished 2011 17' I just got from Apple).

Thanks for inspiring

the beast has been tamed ...
many hours and much suffering, it works now.
sandy SUPERMICRO mainboard X9DRi-LN4F+ with e2690 dual cpu xeon....

osx 10.7.3, 11.3.0 kernel with support for ivy bridge,
32 cores with steep speed enabled.----------------------- not avaiable SPEED sTEEP....
Support for 4 gpu tested. for now in testing fx1800 and 9800gx.
support should take 2 gtx 590. In the coming days we will test
4 port lan enabled.

Joe Safai is doing some testing over the next few days will keep you updated.
If anyone is interested in some tests with R3D files happy to oblige.

CS6 5k for now all in real time full frame at full resolution ..... without redrocket.:emote_22_yikes:
Geekbech above 30000 points.

Thanks to Joe for your patience.

Sorry, but under test.. speed steep not workk...

only solution would be to extract all of the table are p-and c-state and put it in ssd.aml. with several steep, making patches to various kext and hope it works. Working too long ..
Especially in remote desktop ...
For now, the only quick solution would be to disable EIST and overclock the mainboard. Unfortunately not possible on supermicro .. I do not know what it's worth.
This machine with 2 gtx 580 or gtx 590 is not compromised, especially for someone like me who needs ProRes at this time.
And the boys will remember that before this without redrocket cs6 was very long and rendering. As you put movies from 10min to 1 hour was almost always rendered.
Now with this card and cs6 we are close to real time ...
only need to be happy.
Up to that time. up and that I 'll need ProRes. I do not go on windows. It makes me sick and you have to be real, most of the people, editors, filmmakers, videomakers, and and and ... working on ProRes. both for import and export. And now that you can export from cs6 4k with no errors and too good. Delivery 4k proress 4444 or 422 to be managed with the new cs6.
But have you tried to edit a 4K 422 on the timeline? I remain shocked every time is extremely fluid on my 8-core, let alone on this beast ...
Perhaps I set too much on this ..
Sorry for the outburst.:bored:

Most Windows software can encode ProRes by using Debugmode Frameserver > FFMBC (including 4444).

Ironically, the reverse engineered FFmpeg ProRes encoder is significantly faster than Apple's own ProRes encoder on OS X.

Of course, if you require ProRes on a daily basis, better stick to OS X as it is easier and natively supported in all apps.

A Resolve Beta on Windows did include ProRes encoding for a short while, but it was removed quickly. Maybe they received a cease and desist from Apple. I think that is what is holding support in commercial software back, it is a pretty simple codec to reverse engineer. Filmmaster and Telestream do have ProRes encoding, as far as I know, perhaps licensed directly from Apple.

Ciao Subhapin,
of course, This is the point, I need ProRes in the day or the next day, working.
It would exit REDCINE_x or CS6 directly to ProRes and not in the QuickTimeuncompressed and then convert it even in ProRes. Wasted time and wasted disk space.
Yes I still have the Davinci version that does ProRes, but most of the time movies are corrupt, or start at half time and even those made at 120 fps will not work.
In short, a disaster is impossible to work well, obviously for testing ok.
Subhapin, the tests are fine, but when you're on set, I need stability and power.
For now my hack never failed even with 4TB of R3D material to be converted. I think acomputer like this 16-cores coming face even more willing to shoot with EPIC only for the ease of conversion, with the price of a redrocket. you could have 2 pc.
1 pc with this power do everything on the set.
However, you and Jeff are great, without you many people would not know so much;)

OK guys, so here is an update with a real test. The turbo boost is definitely not working. I ran a MSRDumper.kext and watched the speeds and they never go over 2900 (2.9GHz), but burst to 3800MHz in windows.

So I took a 4 min 24 second scene, 5K WS 5:1 and encoded to PR 4444 at 100 quality, 1920x1080, with max depth, no grading.

Also, it plays back 5K from my raid at 1/2 res without one frame stutter. Full res is still not working, but works with win7 (maybe that speed boost helps).

You can see the export screenshot here: http://cinespeed.com/ss1.jpg

Exported 4:24 in 12 minutes.

Luigi, on your 8 core for example, or anyone else with a 12 core, what would be the encode time for something like this? Without a sample comparison, this test is useless.

BTW, GTX 690 should be here tomorrow. I assume it wont work with OS X.

You suck. :'P

I assume it wont work with OS X.

Most likely not...

I have a GTX690 on order, but I'd say it's a week or two out the way they're trickling in right now. Some seller has them on Amazon for $1500 and I've seen a couple pop up on ebay. Probably not worth it, I guess the current beta drivers for it are kinda flaky.

HP is definitely off my christmas card list. I paid for 2-day shipping and they shipped my system via ground. And after the multiple delays where it shipped 18 days later than the original estimate. OTOH, Dell was supposed to start taking pre-orders for their new E5 workstations on the first and it still just says "coming soon". FedEx says I'll have it thursday.

Micron is shipping the rest of my RAM today. Hooray! :)

...guess I'd better order a couple more CPUs and the rest of my parts for that other SuperMicro motherboard.

Jeff, if you were a loser like me, sitting on the computer pressing "refresh page" on the EVGA site, you'd get one too.

Man, you got all the toys, AND you put them to good use.

BTW, that same clip in RCX was 1 hour 25 minutes with the same settings. With a Redrocket, would that encode in real time? 4 minutes to 4 minutes?

How much did this system cost you for all of the components combined? Maybe you could break them down as well. I know many of us our curious about your new FrankenHack :)

Hi, this is my system. Luigi has helped me in getting it to perform by tweaking the settings remotely. And he has worked hard on it. We just have time differences too since I'm in Los Angeles.

The pricing is as follows in U.S. currency:

Supermicro X9DAi motherboard and Chassis are roughly $1000 (board roughly $450)
Intel CPU's are E5-2690 2.9GHz (roughly $2,000 each)
Memory is 64GB up to 128GB at roughly $100-120 per 8GB module.
Video cards and other parts are up to the user.

Thanks
Joe
